Police officers

Posted: Nov 28, 2014

My son is a police officer in one of the most crime infested places in the US.  I am very proud of him.  He was in the military before joining DC Metro.  I pray for his safety and pray he does not encounter someone who thinks they are above the law.  At the point in time that he is confronting a person who has broken the law, my son is the law.  He enforces the law.  Bottom line:  If a police officer tells you to do something, get out of the car, hands up, lie down, or get out of the street, YOU DO IT.  Simple as that.  YOU DO IT.  For those of you who think you are above the law, feel free to take the first ship or plane out of the United States of America.  Put yourself in a police officer's shoes for one day.  you have a target on your back, you work holidays, long hours, see your work go down the drain when a suspect gets off, and threatened everyday of your life.  I would not be a police officer.  I am proud of my son.  He wants to make a difference.  He wants to help people.  He just wants what everyone else wants, respect.  I support the boys in blue.  I am not saying they are all perfect, they are human, but their job is tough.  JUST DO IT.

;

I thank God for your son and other police officers. - Sam

Their job IS tough without a doubt. They are ALWAYS there to help EVERYONE. I pray they all stay safe and do not encounter the Michael Browns of the world.

As prior military and with friends in the police force I thank your son and them for everything they do to keep us safe.

I am forever grateful to them for their selflessness and sacrifice they make every day of their lives to keep us safe from the criminals. And yes, your right, they are the law, when they tell you do do something you do it.

Please thank your son for his dedication and self sacrifice he makes every day he steps onto his job. There are more people that appreciate him than those that don't.

Support and thanks - Rusty

Thanks for all your kind words and support. I will pass it along to him, and I know he will appreciate it, as he has been somewhat frustrated lately with the bad press all over the country concerning the two recent police shootings of young men. Thanks again

I am happy you are proud of your son. I hope he is what everyone who meets him considers him to be a kind, considerate and effective policeman.

That said, I think that I have observed many overzealous police even in our relatively small community.

I think, as a society, we need to decide whether the police should take on a militaristic containment role or a protect and serve role. I suppose in the militaristic role they can protect, but I don't think they serve the people very well in that manner.

Personally, it makes me cringe when I hear that a police officer has former military experience. I feel the 2 "occupations" are not compatible. The military, in particular, active service, recent deployment, have experiences that are not likely to be good models to draw from when policing our society. At current, our police share the organizational structure with the military. I think the similarities stop there. In my opinion, the police need a lot more experience in the psychological aspects of communicating with people. Frankly, I think that military training has resulted in a short-coming in our military also, (as they cannot resolve orders with actuality) PTSD, et cetera, but that is a discussion for another day.

It truly does take a special kind of person to be a good policeman, and I am not really talking about just being willing to work hard, holidays, be on guard 24/7. I am talking about being a whole person and being able to REPEATEDLY view and judge every situation with new eyes and realize that things are not always what they seem and that there are people of all walks of life who need police protection.

The shooting of the 12-year-old in Ohio has left me utterly dumbfounded. If we don't see enormous injustice in that, there really isn't much more to talk about. I really mean that in that I don't see much hope in getting society to come together.

Just one comment on your reply. you "cringe" to hear of a police officer with military background? Not me. He is well trained to handle any situation, and that was started in the military when he was an MP and continued on through with the police department. I sleep better at night knowing there are officers with military background knowing they are protecting me and my family and you, and have the ability to do that. Yes, there are some who suffer from PTSD and other ailments, but you are profiling them as a group, and not on an individual basis, which is not fair. Not all ex-military have PTSD and not all police who have military experience use militarized force. Please just support these young men and women who protect our country, our freedom, and our cities so that we can rest peacefully at night. Just be grateful. If not, then feel free to leave my country.

Why would they all have been MPs? - many have no training

There are valid reasons people distrust the police - and it has nothing to do with being a criminal

I live 5 minutes from Ferguson. I live in the community where Darren Wilson originally worked as a police office. That entire force was disbanded largely in part of how they treated African American citizens of this community. I do understand that a lot of police officers are trained in the military. What you are not telling people is that the UCMJ (Uniformed Code Of Military Justice) holds military police to a higher standard that local community police do. I have little respect or trust of the police and I have never been arrested for anything. I also find it very disrespectful for you to invite people to leave "your country." I was born here, I pay taxes here, I served 5 years active duty US Army and was honorably discharged. I would like to see "our" country be one that respects the rights of all citizens. From your post I can see that you have always been "served and protected" by police. Accept that that has not been the experience of all citizens. By all means be proud of your son,but also remember this is a job he trained and volunteered for; he was not drafted, this is a job he wants to do. Below are some examples of what people in the Ferguson, Dellwood and Jennings community has lived with.

FERGUSON, Mo. — The small city of Jennings, Mo., had a police department so troubled, and with so much tension between white officers and black residents, that the city council finally decided to disband it. Everyone in the Jennings police department was fired. New officers were brought in to create a credible department from scratch.

That was three years ago. One of the officers who worked in that department, and lost his job along with everyone else, was a young man named Darren Wilson.

Some of the Jennings officers reapplied for their jobs, but Wilson got a job in the police department in the nearby city of Ferguson.

You have reason to be proud. I do not understand either why anyone would NOT do as the police says; even if you think you're being unfairly treated, if they're pointing a gun at me screaming "GET ON THE GROUND!", I'm going to be on the ground! If I'm innocent, that will get ironed out later and at least I'll be alive to plead my case.

People have lost respect for them because of all the dirty sm - my opinion

cops. I was raped by one and then intimidated into silence by visits from his fellow officers who told me I might disappear one day. I was 20 years old.

So no, I have no respect for ANY cop, nor do I comply with whatever they ask me to do. You want to search my car? Get a dog, I'll wait. I have nothing in there but I want you to have to go through the trouble of doing that.

I know my rights, I know what they can and can't do. They will always try to overrun a person's rights by tricking them into it or outright lying to them. I call the bluff every time and have never been arrested.

For ALL AMERICANS, know what your rights are when it comes to searches or giving information to law enforcement and only do what you HAVE to do. Dirty cops are everywhere.

That is an Insult - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
To lump all police into bad people is an insult to the force.

And it sounds to me like you live on the edge of the law. You "call the bluff every time..." That means you are doing something likely against the law a lot. I haven't been stopped by a police since I was 18 years old, and I'm 59 now.

To Rusty: Bless your son. He is in a very difficult job, has to make instant decisions, and is in a very dangerous neighborhood---where he is not appreciated by the general population or our president.

Give him a big hug from those of us who respect the law.

My biggest fear? I fear the way things are these days, fewer and fewer people will want to be a cop.

No insult. I know my rights, that's all. I have never been arrested sm - my opinion

held, jailed or anything of the kind; I just have been in the presence of a lot of police. Like the time I was going into a convenience store and a cop was coming out, said "hi" and I didn't acknowledge him. He actually waited until I came out of the store and asked for my license and registration, which he only got my license because I wasn't driving when he spoke to me. They are generally power-hungry thugs and demand attention and kowtowing, and I won't do it.

They chose to do that job, that's their problem if their colleagues make the whole bunch look like thugs.

Not necessarily the edge of the law. - sm

The poster who has had experience with the police might live in a less "well to do" neighborhood and there may be more police encounters. She may just get out and about and do more social things in her community. MTs working at home can sometimes be a bit introverted, but sounds like she is not. It is insulting to assume that because she is social, perhaps younger than the poster criticizing her, that she is doing something wrong. People have made the jump that because they have not had any encounters with the police that they know how the police behave and criticize those that offer perspective as being "on the edge." This is illogical.

As to fewer and fewer wanting to be cops, they probably ought to pay them better, and maybe we would be able to attain a higher standard for the profession with better results.

I have three friends who are cops, but as soon - as they put on the uniform, -

like a shield. I try to treat any police I encounter, (like waiting in line for burger or something), like a son or relative. Make them smile, crack the facade, if you can. Some of them are so puffed up there is nothing there to talk to though.

It's like a mask, or a macho thing. For some - it seems their authority is corruptive.
