Police retraining. (sm)

Posted: May 12, 2015

Now let me see if I have this right.
There's no guidance or discipline in the home.  The family situation is so unstable, 'Junior' doesn't even know where or to whom to send a Father's Day card.  Junior gets dumped into the education system where he is socially promoted because the overwhelmed school district can't deal with the undisciplined whelp.  Junior's major formative influences are 'gangsta' rap videos and a corresponding peer group of gangsta wannabes.
At age 18, Junior is turned loose on society carrying a bad attitude, a broken compass and little respect for authority.  Junior gets himself in big trouble with the law and meets dire consequences.   Then, the situation diagnosis is that the police need more training and understanding?
Pardon me for asking, but do you really believe this BS?

;

Police misconduct is why we need police - retraining--has nothing to do with that rant

[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe the policeman were raised in the flavor of that rant and can't escape to be normal respectable authority.

I have included the May 8 report, just in case the computer malfunctions or something. If really interested, you can follow all of the links.

Here are the eight reports of police misconduct tracked for Friday, May 8, 2015:
◾Washington County, Oregon: A sergeant resigned during an investigation into his alleged sexual harassment and misconduct. ow.ly/MGZ6D
◾Washington State Police: A trooper was arrested for attempting to conceal his teenaged son’s role in an attempted arson. The veteran trooper allegedly tried to destroy evidence that linked his son to the crime. ow.ly/MGZBH
◾Alameda, California: The city settled an excessive force lawsuit. The plaintiff who was beaten by an officer with a baton received $450,000 for injuries he sustained during his mistaken arrest. ow.ly/MH0ld
◾Update: Chula Vista, California (First reported 06-18-14): A now-former officer pled guilty to misdemeanor child abuse for choking and assaulting his girlfriend’s 16-year-old son. ow.ly/MHDbf
◾Buffalo, New York: An officer faces civil rights charges for mistreating a witness to a crime and having that witness falsely arrested. The officer was off-duty at the time and working security at a pub. The incident was a murder in which the pub’s manager threw a man down the stairs, leading to his death. ow.ly/MHTVy
◾Clanton, Alabama: The police chief was arrested for stealing from FOP’s “Santa Claus Fund.” That fund provides gifts to kids in need during the holiday season. ow.ly/MHWXC
◾Bel Aire, Kansas: A now-former chief and three now-former officers were indicted for fraud. Allegedly, they bought guns under the guise of official use to take advantage of law enforcement tax exemptions to sell them at a profit. ow.ly/MI0OL
◾Bartlett, Tennessee: An officer was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter for a high-speed crash while in pursuit that killed two motorists. ow.ly/MIwpn

Eight reports of misconduct? - 1.1 million law enforcement officers

I realize the one is too many, but do all 1.1 million need training?

Almost every day? More or less some days - Only those reported listed

Interesting point. Perhaps the retraining should begin with the employer - pam

and include better screening and assessment of police officers early in the application and training stages.

Just who do you think will be the first ones to beg for police help if ISIS or ISIL or whatever comes to our shores. They are already in Texas and who knows where else they will be.

If you ask me, this is a blatant attempt to cause racial divide. We went through the horrible 60s or my generation did and I am white. I would not wish that on any generation of any color. We know who our enemies are and it is not the police.

That's just it. Maybe the "enemy" isn't who we're told it is. Whomever - is responsible for divide/conquer

[ In Reply To ..]
...then they're winning, when we make statements using words like "enemy." (Though I admit, I'm not sure who was meant as "enemy" in that last sentence, but it really doesn't matter to make this point.)

I personally don't believe anyone in politics had anything to do with the original and individual choices made by either the police officers nor ordinary citizens, arrested or not, in either case.

However, I DO agree that these situations are now being USED by politicians to help polarize and gain votes for themselves, divide and conquer, on both sides.

I suppose you could look at it that way - and I might believe that

[ In Reply To ..]
they would actually prosecute the police officers that are killing and abusing people for no reason, white and black. Cudos to South Carolina. The others aren't even charged with manslaughter, when no weapons on the perpetrators. So, if politicians are using this, it is because they are using it as examples of what is right and wrong. It is time for them not to just hang their heads and say "the justice system did what it could." That is just the people in authority did the minimum of what they could get away with.

Did you forget the actions of the police against black....sm - Alice

people in the south in the 60s? Surely you remember the attack dogs and the fire hoses? The price needed retraining back then and they are sorely in need of retraining now.

I should have said - anonie

[ In Reply To ..]
I should have said enemy, which was discrimination and I can remember that man that was shot and in a WC the rest of his life was the worst.

Anyway, it was hatred for the black race and not wanting them to have rights that they deserved. Why else fight the civil war if they were not going to free the slaves to have rights like other men of any color.

I do remember the horrible pictures of hangings of blacks in the south, dogs hunting them and other awful things.

I just meant to say I would not want either race to go through that again. We also have to think about the illegals who are in our country, not just Mexicans but who knows who else from countries that hate us or just decide to come here for the freebies.

Tell me who is going to protect us if we nationalize our police like the stupid political machine is trying to do with all of these racial things. Just watch out. Martin Luther King needs to be here. He was a great man and I admired him a lot.

Sorry I should have clarified enemies to mean enemy at the time in the 60s. I hope that blacks do not undo all the good that King did in his lifetime. There were lots of whites who helped their cause if they had any consciences at all.

No worries, I just wanted to be 100% sure (above commenter). I agree, the enemy is an ideology - rather than a person or group

[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks for clarifying, good point. Less of a "who" to blame and more of a "what".

Sounds like you have seen racism coming from both sides, depending on the mindset of the era at the time. People forget that it used to be flipped, it was the Dems who were perceived to be racists. And that despite the movie Selma, LBJ was actually rumored to privately be a racist and signed civil rights begrudgingly, as well as lied to everyone about Vietnam. I understand people living during that time never forgetting how much they were lied to by their government.

Today, I think the media for one political group plays the race card when they oughtn't, and other times, the other political side's media tells us the race card is being played when it's not, it really is legitimate racism. So we can't always believe what we're told, was where I was coming from - I think both sides do this just to get ratings or gain votes sometimes.

Like Baltimore for instance. It's just not that "black and white" (pardon the pun). Six officers, 3 black, 3 white, one female and 1 black victim. We can't and shouldn't make that one about race because it's not. However, once politicians and press get involved and suddenly, boom, it's about racism now. Then people use it as an excuse to vent their frustrations about racism in general and it's taken on a life of its own separate from the actual issue.

Wow, Mama, these are very generalized hypothetical statements - Police retraining

[ In Reply To ..]
I do not believe police will receive retraining on the basis of an example like the general made-up circumstances in your post. Do YOU really believe that BS? I do not even believe the majority of police need retraining.

When a man is arrested by 6 policeman and suffers a SEVERED spinal cord after he is in custody and dies, someone needs retraining.

When a man is lying face-down on the ground with his hands outstretched and 4 policeman beat and kick the crap out of him, someone needs retraining.

When a man is running from the police, over a broken tail light, gets about 50 feet away from him, still running, and is hot in the back EIGHT times, someone needs retraining.

These are just examples of a trend that needs to be stopped. It probably does not happen as often as some rioters would want you to believe, but it makes big news these days, so gets a lot of attention. It also probably happens more than you think. What if you were your son? Shot in the back while running away?

If this means that type of behavior is going to be addressed with all policemen, so be it. It should not have to be....but a couple bad apples can really spoil the whole bunch in the eyes of the media.

Your idea that nothing like this is even necessary is also not fair, especially when you ignore actual case facts, and use a false example as you did, spinning that no cops are bad. Be fair.

If people become accepting of these "isolated" incidents - They will only grow. NM
