Should I notify Police?

Posted: Mar 9, 2016

My father recently passed away.  I went to clean out his hunting camp (on 6.5 acres) and found some questionable stuff, to say the least.  He had a fake door built in the back of his closet.  When I opened it, it was FULL of BDSM paraphernalia.  Thousands of dollars worth.  Then, I really started looking around his camp.  I found several hooks and pulley systems hanging from the ceilings, and stacks and stacks of BDSM magazines with bookmarks of interest.  In the hallway, where the water tank USED to be, he took down the wall and put a small door with a lock on it.  Inside were more hooks and pulley systems.  The strangest, outside was a little girl's bike.  There are no little girls in our family - everyone is of adult age.

Needless to say, not only was I disgusted, but upon talking to a few of my friends, they say I need to contact the police, just to be sure.  Any opinions?

Maybe your dad was into that stuff and you just didn't know him like you thought you did. If he built those secret doors etc...Not sure why a stranger would just set up camp like that and have all of those things. Just sayin'. Sometimes we don't really know people like we think we do. Not sure what the police would do but tell you the same thing I did.

Sorry for your loss.

I think you should. The police will send an investigator out and either quell your worries or verify them. Many people go missing every year without a trace and if he was involved in this you could not live with yourself for not doing so.

My prayers and thoughts are with you at this time.

Ask an officer to come out to your home - sm

I'm sorry for your loss and for your natural alarm. I would not notify the police of your findings over the phone.

Instead, call the police, tell them you have concerns over things you found at the site, and ask for an officer to come out to your home to discuss it.

In my experience, police officers tend to be pretty circumspect. They've seen lots of stuff and are capable of not jumping to conclusions.

They may well want to have a look at his camp given what you describe. Hopefully, what you found is "nothing."

Even though your father is gone now, the police will be able to assess whether further investigation is worthwhile. There could be unsolved crimes or missing persons cases that may benefit from your disclosure.

Your alarm is completely reasonable. My heart goes out to you. I agree that you should speak to authorities about this.

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry for your loss and now your stress. I would call the police, and get them to the cabin. I agree, if over the phone, they may not. I would not be able to get a decent night's sleep with this hanging over me, if I did not do everything to investigate it. Good luck, and saying a little prayer for you for guidance and strength.

First off, my condolences for the loss of your father. My question (thinking like a lawyer wannabe) would be: Are you sure your father is responsible for what was found there? Did he share the campsite with others? Rent it out to anyone? Of course, a dead man can neither be questioned nor prosecuted, but by telling the police, you may give them information that would help explain or clear up open cases. As to the BDSM materials, I personally find it revolting, but if no children or unwilling participants were involved, I am not sure any crime was committed. A lot of people do things that the rest of the world calls "kinky," things that you and I would never do; however, that does not make them illegal. HOWEVER, that said, the fact that there was a LITTLE GIRL'S bike there really concerns me. For this reason alone, I would say yes, yes, yes, do go to the police. I think it is imperative to do so. I would go personally to whatever police department (or sheriff) that handles that jurisdiction and make a report personally to him or her. I would be very forthright and ask if there are any children on the missing persons roster. It has been my experience that complaining witnesses are taken much more seriously when the complaint is made in person. It may be that the little girl's bike may just the piece of evidence they need to solve something. Or not. In any case, you will have done the right thing.

Yes! WTH is a little girl's bike doing in a hunting - nm

camp?

Absolutely - Alert the Authorities

Nick gave very good advice, again, and I would follow it, if I were you. I know it is hard to bring to light something that apparently nobody knew anything about, but there may be some missing pieces to lots of puzzles there. I think an investigation is warranted. I am sure the authorities will be discrete with your information. Good luck to you.

Yes, because of the bike - that would concern me the most

[ In Reply To ..]
If you found 2 places where he hid stuff, there may be more to be found. I would say definitely report it. Like the others, my heart goes out to you. Bless you & your family.

Not only the bike but also because you - nm

also described a "small door" along with the hidden one in the closet. Why a "small door?" That, and over 6 acres, a lot of time and effort to "hide" what he was doing in a cabin, so much so to remodel and take out a water tank. What else could he have hid on all that acreage, ie, more hidden doors leading to underground, tunnels, etc. Even though there are no young girls in the family, is it possible this bike has been there several years and was maybe a childhood bike of a relative? My condolences on the loss of your father and that you had to mentally process this disturbing find while you are grieving. Prayers for you. Please go talk to the police.

I agree the police need to know - But have a lawyer as well

[ In Reply To ..]
I think it would be very wise in this instance to consult an attorney about this as well, the sooner the better. Among other things, you want to protect your property, and also just to protect yourself from any potential problems with the police as they sort through this. You just don't know what rabbit holes the police may go down as they investigate criminal matters, you could get caught up in this in ways you do not anticipate, although you are completely innocent and knew nothing about it. Where criminal matters are concerned, things are very different than in our middle class, law-abiding, respectable world where contacts with police consist of such things as minor traffic violations or parking tickets.

My Thoughts - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
If you are in the will and are inheriting this property, I would consult a lawyer before allowing the transfer of the property to you. If this is a criminal case, I don't think you want your name on anything.

If the property is already in your name, I would still consult a lawyer before contacting the police. You may not need to actually hire the lawyer, but I would get a legal perspective first.

Of course, do this ASAP so the authorities can get involved ASAP.

Or, heck, maybe he was just kinky and was involved in consensual activities, but I really, really don't like that little girl's bike there or the "small door" and the hidden aspect of the rest. It's creepy.

Police are not always your friend - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Please be careful when talking to the police. Anything and everything you say and any conclusions they make CAN AND WILL be held against you in a court. If possible, I would suggest having a lawyer involved from the beginning before you ever contact any police. Also, it doesn't hurt for you to take your own photos of the scene. Keep detailed notes of who said what and who did what, etc.

Just a thought - Know there will be dislikes

[ In Reply To ..]
BUT, if there was no crime committed and no children were involved, etc., you could sell his BDSM stuff on eBay. If you need cash (and if you are an MT, chances are you do) or if you need to settle his estate, it's worth a thought. Sorry in advance if this offends anyone.

Deer camp possible explanations - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
At a hunting camp it would not be unusual to have stuff for the processing of deer, bear, etc. which would include hooks and pulleys. Locked storage could have been for guns, ammo, or other things he was concerned could be stolen as remote cabins are often the target of burglars. His reading material is quirky, but not against the law. He may have found the bike on the property and intended to dispose of it or find the owner and return it. Kids do snoop around and forget stuff. Just saying there might be other explanations.

Doubt it - It seems

[ In Reply To ..]
to me that if it was a true "hunting camp" for deer or bear or whatever else they were hunting, they would have the hooks and pulleys etc in open vision, not hidden away behind some secret doors where a water heater had been removed. I understand that there may be other explanations, but these days, expecting the best has been disappointing to say the least. I feel there has been something nefarious going on here, and a lot of other people do, as well. This place needs to be investigated, just in case your bright shiny thoughts of nothing being wrong, do not play out. Sorry to be so negative, but the world has made me that way.

"nothing bright and shiny" - just sick of rush to judgment

[ In Reply To ..]
Sometimes too much CSI and NCIS. Remember JonBenet Ramsey? Her parents were basically tried and convicted in the media, their lives were ruined, and they were later proven innocent. I personally do not like hunting, but I live in an area where hunting is a big thing. I turn my head when I see deer and bear hanging from trees for the blood to drain. Old cabins and houses do indeed have nooks and crannies and space is sometimes very valuable. We do have a cabin and everything is kept locked up. It is not convenient, but it helps to keep good people honest. Also, I often have visiting kitties, dogs, and children trespassing, and certainly do not worry about it. But that is just me. Certainly I would report the above, but I would be ready to accept a plausible explanation.

Maybe I watch too much TV, but - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Why would he have a LOCKED "small door" for guns and ammo but there is no mention of a LOCKED fake door behind the closet? Wouldn't you rather be standing on your feet storing your guns and ammo in a locked fake door behind your closet rather than putting a lock on a "small door" that you might possibly have to get on your belly to get into (depending on how small "small is?). Plus, the fact that he removed the WATER source in the cabin in order to have that little door? Of course kids snoop around, I know I did and I also know I LOVED my bike like most kids do. If I was a little girl by myself snooping around, I sure as hell would not forget my BIKE unless I was scared as hell and running away from something or someone and then too fearful to return to get my bike. And, wouldn't my parents say to me, hey, where's your bike? And, I wouldn't tell them, I would lie, I would already have a believable story as a kid to tell my parents? I wouldn't tell grandma or my teacher or my friend(s)? If I was with friends snooping around and we all got scared and took off with one of us leaving our bike, wouldn't we tell our parents why the bike was left behind??? I hope you are right about other explanations, but this just does not add up. Shouldn't there have been hooks and pulleys on trees outside to drain the blood from dead animals rather than in a cabin? I am not saying there wasn't, only that the OP does not mention hooks and pulleys on the other 6 acres of land, only INSIDE the cabin.

No - doubt

your daddy's bondage sex affiliation caught your panties in a twist, but that was his choice in life. The little bike could be another of the BDSM maneuver he had devised. Do go to Police if you think your daddy might have kidnapped, raped, and killed a little girl. Otherwise, find a plug that might be lying around and cork your thoughts and move on.

Did you end up calling the police? I suppose if they find anything you won't be able to tell us if there is an investigation going on.
