Need military burial information

Posted: Dec 2, 2009

My husband's father was in the military and served in VietNam 3 times.  He just passed right after divorcing his wife.  His wife now says that in between hospitalizations she took him to the JP and they re-married and he changed his will (8 days after he made the will after the divorce).  Now that is enough to grasp but here is the clincher.  She is telling the family that the military won't bury him for 8 days (because they are so busy) and after the 1 hour viewing that the military whisks the body away and buries the body privately with no family present (because they are so busy and families would slow them down) and that the family is free to visit the grave at a later date.    This whole thing does not sound logical and I just wanted to know if anybody is aware of how the military buries it's vets in NJ?  This is chaotic enough with the death, let alone the wife who is or may not be the wife and the question of his estate, etc.  It sounds like she is trying to secret away the burial and leave the rest of the family out in the cold.  Anybody know anything about this?

Lies, lies, all lies! - military funerals

My father was a veteran of WW II, and he's buried in NJ. We planned his funeral and the military accommodated us. There was an honor guard of veterans, a flag ceremony, and my mother was presented with the folded flag that had been draped over the casket When my uncle, who was also a WWII vet, died a few years later, the same was done. When my father-in-law passed (Korean War vet), again, we planned the funeral, and military honors were paid. All three of these graves were marked with a bronze plaque provided by Uncle Sam.

Call the VA Administration nearest you. They will help. My father, uncle and father-in-law had honor guards at their services. The members of the guard were veterans themselves, people who volunteer to do this service. Some of them took time off from work to show up, and we were most grateful.

I think this woman is up to something. Trust your instincts and stand by your ground. I've been to other veterans' funerals, and not once have the survivors been told that the military was "too busy". Definitely call the Veterans Administration.

In PA, my dad had the honor guard, we received the folded flag, etc. I really cannot remember if our family contacted the VA or if everything was handled through the funeral home. I agree with the others--something odd is going on. Contact the VA or a funeral home for info.

I would imagine all states are the same as the VA does not discriminate. Two women I know were buried at their husband's site in the NE and one died before the husband. I don't know the particulars but for the wives there is no military funeral but the burial plot and marker were provided with the living spouse and the vet's names carved in. Check with the local and national VA in Washington. She wants all she can get her hands on, she's lying methinks!

The GOP Vs The MilitaryFeb 03, 2010
Interesting indeed! From Andrew Sullivan's blog:02 Feb 2010 07:22 pmThe GOP vs The MilitarySteve Benen makes an interesting point: Obama has spent a year following the guidance of military leaders, and Republicans have spent a year breaking with the judgment of the military establishment. It's a fascinating dynamic. On everything from civilian trials to Gitmo to torture, we have two distinct groups -- GOP leaders, the Cheneys, Limbaugh, and conservative activists on one side; President ...

Military BurielDec 02, 2009
I don't know for sure but given the fact that I was married to a military man for 9 of our 18 years, it all sounds llike crapola to me, all coming from her.  The Red Cross may be able to help.  They were our liason when we needed to contact one of our guys out to sea on a submarine.  We were generally not allowed to know where they were at any given time and were out of contact with our husbands for sometimes 100 or more days at a time, so we used them as the go-between.&nbs ...

Muslims And Gays In The MilitaryFeb 03, 2010
OK, somebody has to say it. It’s uncomfortable and it makes whoever says it open to being called a “Pharisee,” a “homophobe,” a “bigot,” a sanctimonious hater, a benighted troglodyte, or worse. Somebody has to endure that, though. We need to act like grown up, secure people who can talk about difficult things and resolve them. So, to quote one of my favorites, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, “Call me a relic, call me what you will. Say I&rsq ...
