Pentagon wants to replace military pensions

Posted: Aug 18, 2011

with 401-k style retirement package, with no protection from market changes. What a horrible plan. What a kick in the teeth to those who dodge bullets on our behalf and are lucky enough to make it to retirement age.

They are always threatening military retirement in some form... - My husband has 16 years in

and will be eligible to retire in four years. We have been expecting the retirement check (which really is not that much) to augment our income when he retires. They are now saying that they might change it so that even though he can retire at 20 years, he would not be able to collect retirement pay until age 65. He has already invested 16 years, it seems unfair to change the rules now. He will be eligible to retire at age 37. If a private company were to change their retirement plan to the detriment of the employees, there would be public outcry and the government would be all over it, but screw the people who have served our country and take money that was promised out of their pockets and that's okay. I don't understand.

I sympathize, and - sm

I understand your feelings. I do feel compelled to point out that corporations "change the rules" every day on workers, and all a lot of people can say is that the corporations should be allowed to outsource and pay no taxes. Lately there has been a strong Republican movement to take away public employee pension funds that have been paid into by employees of the schools, local and state governments, and no one gives a darn until it hits them. Now Republican Paul Ryan wants to drive the Medicare age up, and when they say "entitlement reform" they are talking about cutting your Social Security. Darn right, I feel I am entitled to my Social Security that I have paid into for most of my life, and I think you are entitled to the military benefits that you were promised. We have to stick together in this!

just a bunch of talk - that's all

Talk like this has been going on since before I got out in the late 80's. Don't worry. It's just a bunch of talk when budget cuts start. It'll never happen. Enjoy your retirement and ignore the rumors. That's all they are.

There is a bunch that want you to just let things happen - Don't listen to them - sm

They say: Don't do anything, what could happen? It will be okay.

or: Vote all the bums out.

or: Don't vote, why bother.

This is how they take away your benefits and you lose your rights. You have to kick and scream to be heard. Look at the people of Wisconsin--Walker and the Koch brothers were trying to take over, but people wised up before it was too late. They had the recalls, and while they did not get a majority, they are now within 1 vote, and all of a sudden, Walker wants to change and listen to the people. Call your Congressman, write to your newspapers and exercise your right to vote. Do not ignore the rumors.

Iran fired on an unarmed U.S. drone last week as it was hovering in international airspace, the Pentagon announced Thursday .  Spokesman George Little said the incident occurred Nov. 1 at 4:50 a.m. ET. The GOP Vs The MilitaryFeb 03, 2010
Interesting indeed! From Andrew Sullivan's blog:02 Feb 2010 07:22 pmThe GOP vs The MilitarySteve Benen makes an interesting point: Obama has spent a year following the guidance of military leaders, and Republicans have spent a year breaking with the judgment of the military establishment. It's a fascinating dynamic. On everything from civilian trials to Gitmo to torture, we have two distinct groups -- GOP leaders, the Cheneys, Limbaugh, and conservative activists on one side; President ...

OK, somebody has to say it. It’s uncomfortable and it makes whoever says it open to being called a “Pharisee,” a “homophobe,” a “bigot,” a sanctimonious hater, a benighted troglodyte, or worse. Somebody has to endure that, though. We need to act like grown up, secure people who can talk about difficult things and resolve them.
