My dog is preggers and I don't know nothin about birth no puppies!

She's a year and a half old boxer. I kept meaning to get her spayed, but it always got pushed down on the list by other pressing bills and such. I thought since I had a fenced in yard, I would be able to keep any males after her at bay, but apparently there are some sneaky little dawgs out there!
Anyway, I have never had a pregnant dog before and I have no idea what to do when the time comes. Do I have to help her deliver? She was in heat towards the end of September, so when would that make her due? Her belly is pretty big now and in the last week or so she's decided she likes to be in the bottom of my linen closet and I have to leave the door open for her or she will scratch on it endlessly.
Once she has the puppies, when do they eat puppy chow while they nurse? When should they be taken to get their first set of shots?
I know that once she has these puppies and they are weaned, number one on my list will be get Sugar spayed!

[ In Reply To ..]Gestation period is approximately 63 days, so if she was in heat in September, she's probably due within the next 2 weeks. Provide her with a low sided box or a place where she's comfortable, sounds like your linen closet is going to be the spot. I would put some newspaper or something down in there and maybe an old blanket that you can throw away afterwards.
Generally you don't have to do anything, unless there's a problem. Stay near her to reassure her. Make sure she opens the sac on each puppy as it's born. With her being a new mother, she may not know to do that with the first one. You may have to help her with that. She should lick them and clean them up. If she doesn't open the sac and try to lick it and clean it up, and it's not breathing, rub it vigorously with a clean towel. Usually that will stimulate the puppy to start breathing. Don't be alarmed if she eats the sac, that's normal. After she cleans them and drys them off, keep them warm. Have some clean blankets or towels for bedding for her and the puppies afterwards and keep them out of drafts.
Puppies don't start eating puppy chow until they're about 4 weeks old, up until then they nurse and that's it. Make sure mom eats and is well fed, the puppies will take a lot out of her. Right now I would start feeding her a little extra to help build her up. Some people even put the mother on puppy food before she delivers because of the extra vitamins and nutrients.
We just got a new puppy in August. My vet says not to give first shots until the puppy is 8-9 weeks old. If they're boxer or boxer mixes, and you want they're tailes and dew claws done, that's usually done at about 3-4 days old.

[ In Reply To ..]I don't have any experience with birthing puppies but just about every other type of animal. In cooler weather I used to put a heating pad underneath a towel for the newborn kittens. Seemed to make them cozy and I never had any problems. Usually animals deliver without help. I recall the first time I delivered a baby miniature goat. It happened to be on Thanksgiving Day and the mom was in trouble. I held the phone on my shoulder while my vet tried to talk me through it. I couldn't get it and he ended up meeting me at the office where he did an emergency C-section. He said it was the biggest one he had ever seen. Mom was okay but lost the baby. I've assisted a few miniature mares and donkeys in birthing, all with happy endings but no fun project! Good luck with the puppies.

You should be feeding her puppy chow now, as she needs the extra nutrition and keep feeding her the puppy chow until the puppies themselves are eating it. If she's burrowing into your linen closet, she's decided that's where she wants to whelp, so if you have anything in there you dont' want to get icky, you better take it out now. You might not necessarily have to help her give birth, but I certainly would stand by and make sure she doesn't have problems. A guy I work with has a stray dog that ended up in their yard who gave birth under the wood pile. She rolled over onto one of the puppies and killed it, so you want to watch out for stuff like that.
You really need to call your vet. I don't know anything about the timing of the shots, etc. The puppies will be completely on mother's milk for at least 5 weeks and then will have to be transitioned onto puppy food over the next couple of weeks after that. YOu don't want to try to find homes for them until they are at least 8 weeks old, and some vets prefer 9 to 12 weeks.

[ In Reply To ..]Again, I've never raised puppies but used to raise Bengal kittens. I would handle them from birth and raise them underfoot, very helpful in my opinion if you plan to place them in adoptive homes. Depending on the age of the children I would caution them to be very gentle and not to handle them too much at first. Assuming puppies are like kittens, I would assume this would be true for puppies too but maybe someone with puppy experience can better answer.

[ In Reply To ..]The biggest concern with the kids handling the pups is that the mother may be protective of them. Even if she knows the children well it may be upsetting to her to have too many hands in her whelping box in the first few days, and you don't want her taking a nip. Another tip: If you are comfortable giving subcutaneous shots yourself, you can buy them at farm supply stores (Tractor Supply, etc.) for much cheaper than the vet will charge. I have had sled dogs for 20 years and I vaccinate at 6, 10 and 14 weeks.

[ In Reply To ..]Exact count to whelping is 63 days. If she goes past her due date, get her to vet. Recommend you take her to vet for x-ray to see how many puppies to expect. Take her temp once a day. Normal temp for dog is 101-102 degrees. If it drops to about 97-98, she will whelp within 12-24 hours. She is young, so puppies should come every 30 mins to 1 hour. Depending on how many puppies, entire event could take 4 hrs or longer depending on how many puppies. If a puppy gets stuck, you may need to help her. Ask your vet how to do this. If she goes longer than 3 hrs, contact your vet as she may have a problem, & if this happens she may need an emergency C-section. A kiddie pool with lots of torn up newspapers is a good whelping bed. She does not have to necessarily give birth in your linen closet. Find a book on whelping. Finally, after all puppies are born, she needs to see the vet for a "clean-up" shot to make sure all afterbirth has been expelled. Let her eat the afterbirth, will give her extra nutrition. Handle the puppies often so they get used to being handled. If you have a strong bond with your dog she will be okay with this. Give her extra food. Keep her secluded with her babies. Good luck & hope this helps in some way. It will probably happen in the middle of the night. Someone needs to be with her when she gives birth. If you have small children limit their contact in the birthing area. Fences will not keep male dogs out when a female is in heat. You have to keep her inside & take her to potty on a leash.
