what happened to free kitties and puppies?

Posted: Nov 14, 2009

I was on Craigslist today to look for my sister a kitty for christmas because hers just died and she hasn't been able to get another one.  People were trying to charge people like $500 to get rid of their dog!  I thought usually when you give a pet away that you do just that... give it away... for free.  Over and over again the people state that the fee is to make sure the animal goes to a good home, but that is CRAP!!!  People who treat animals like dirt can pay the fee just like someone who won't!  If I gave an animal away I would make sure it had a good home, maybe check the home out.  These people are SELLING animals!!!  SELLING!!!  Not giving them away!  Okay, sorry about that.  I needed to vent a little bit.  Every free kitty tag I clicked on wanted me to pay big bucks for a kitty cat!

or rescue organization - most are overwhelmed with abandoned and surrendered pets these days, many people have had to give pets up because of the economy, being deployed in the military, etc. Another thought - Christmas is not always the best time to bring a new pet into a house, with all the festivities and lack of time to give the new family member the attention it needs. Thanks!

we have an over abdundance of animals here in the south. The lady I work with just yesterday gave away a pure bred Jack Russell puppy to an older lady, free of cost, fully vetted by the way, microchipped also and this is not the first time we have done this. I see lots of free animals on CLs here (Atlanta listings). I only wish there were enough people to take all the animals that need homes.

Red tape, rules and regulations are a hassle - fooey on shelter game

Some shelters make it so difficult and expensive to adopt an animal that nobody is going to bother. Their rules are stricter than adopting a human! I think its ridiculous because they're going to KILL these animals if they don't get homes. Many shelters say their rules are tough to keep animals from coming back to the shelter in the future - hard to do when it never leaves to begin with. And face it, the repeat vistor animals that come to the shelter have major behavioral issues that the average family can't handle, and no amount of screening will fix it.

red tape and rules never bothered me - Snow Bunny

I just adopted two 5-month-old kittens from Pet Smart. Cost me $125. Big pile of paperwork to sign. So what?

And the reason the shelters euthanize so many animals (sometimes in a week after they get them), is because they don't have the room. What's the alternative? Throw them in the street?

One of my cats was brought to me last year as a kitten. Some kids found her shoved in a very tiny cage (hardly any room to move around) by the creek, no food or water and certainly no cat pan. Wouldn't it have been kinder to bring the kitten to the shelter? Euthanasia would have more humane then being left to die a slow, agonizing death from thirst, starvation, lying in your own defecation, and the elements.

So, you may not like all the red tape, rules, and regulations, but consider the alternatives. Small sacrifice to make to avoid the alternative: Animal abandonment.

If they've been exposed to other sick animals. Maybe the mother cat had feline leukemia. If she did, the kittens will have it. And what you don't ever want to witness is a kitten die from FIP.

I have 2 of the most beautiful kitties you could ever hope to meet and - they are my Walmart boys

[ In Reply To ..]
When I got them about 5 years ago hubby called and told me what he was seeing. He saw they would be beautiful and brought them home to me. I immediately had them checked out the same day, tested, etc. because I had an older gray kitty here that I certainly did not want exposed to any disease the boys might have. Five years later and they are my loves. I would not say do not get an animal there, might be a good move but you certainly should have checked out.
you did the right thing - Snow Bunny

but a lot of people wouldn't, which I should have been more specific in stating. People wants the free animal and then that's it. They don't go further.

Whether an individual does what you did and spends the $$$ to check it out, or they spend the money up front to get the animal (already had shots and is spayed/neutered), it's okay.

I'm very big into rescue. Got 19 cats (all indoors).

maybe I can provide one perspective - Snow Bunny

[ In Reply To ..]
There is no such thing as a "free pet." Even the rescue organizations will charge a fee ($50-75), but that's a return on the money they paid for the animal to be given some shots (i.e. rabies) and also to spay/neuter them. If you find someone advertising "free puppies/kittens," they haven't done anything and the owner will have to take on that financial burden (and they will if they are responsible).

With the person charging $500 for a dog, I don't think it is any different than people who hold a garage sale. Maybe the person just wants a return on what they spent on the animal, i.e. shots, declawing, sterilization, treating for an illness, etc.

I speak from personal knowledge on this, having dealt directly with rescue organizations.

Hope this explains it better.

not all pets come back because they have major problems; a lot of people decide they want a dog (or cat) (or the kids are begging for a dog or cat) and are just not prepared for the amount of time (and yes, money too) that it takes to make a pet part of your family. Some years ago we had a dog show up on our doorstep in a major thunderstorm in March; unfortunately it was a Sunday, but I figured no problem, I'd call on Monday and get her back home. The tags turned out to be outdated, but I was acquainted with the person whose name they were in, so I called her, only to find out she had given the dog to someone else a year and a half before, and couldn't remember where she worked but it was one of the "copier companies" in town. (Fortunately we're talking a small town here, not New York or something.) I finally tracked her down and she said she had kept the dog for a couple of weeks and took it to the shelter because she'd no more than take it out to do it's business and it would come in and poop on the floor. After about 6 calls to our local shelter, trying to find out who the dog belonged to, the lady said to me "I really hate to say this, but I don't think anyone is looking too hard for that dog." To which I agreed and she then said, "so are you thinking about keeping her?" (sounding quite hopeful but resigned to the fact that I probably wasn't). We already had a husky and 3 cats, but there was no way I could NOT keep that dog, and she turned out to be a fabulous pet and lived with us for 8 years, until we had to have her put down at 13. Sorry for the long story, but I miss that dog a lot and have absolutely no idea why she had such a hard time keeping a home! (We now have 2 collies that we took in from a relative that could no longer keep them, plus 1 stray cat and 1 shelter cat.) Just sign me - Fur's a Fly'in!

A story similar to yours: A small office complex where I used to work had a very pretty little white cat come and visit on a fairly regular basis. She'd come see us one day, the Allstate office the next, etc. She had a collar and tags on so I knew she had a home. I didn't see her for about six months and then she showed up again out of the blue one day. Collar was frayed and worn looking and within a week it had fallen off. The cat no longer just came visiting, she hung out under the bushes. It was getting over 100 that summer so I started putting out water for her, and eventually started feeding her. She got attacked by another cat or something at one point and had a bad laceration to her ear. I remembered the name that had been on her tags and tracked the people down. They said they could never keep her in the house because she kept spraying everywhere (this was a neutered female) and yet their dogs kept chasing her out of the hard. I took her home, took her to the vet and she remained with me for the next 8 or 9 years or so. Never once sprayed in the house, either.
definitely a problem in the home - Snow Bunny
[ In Reply To ..]
Caused by the two dogs.

A male cat sprays because it is marking the territory. When a female cat sprays it is usually because there is an underlying emotional issue, in this case the 2 dogs. So, rather than deal with the disciplining and controlling the dogs, the owners just dumped the cat into the street.

Which is the equivalent of a child growing up with an abusive parent, and the other parent throws the kid out because they are "behavior problems." (gee, I wonder why)

I've found free kitties right outside my door - Tired&CrankyMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I live in a residential area. Every year litters of kittens are born and there are a lot more stray cats all over this neighborhood. Most of them get fed by the generosity of neighbors, some get taken in and the rest live as strays outside.

My oldest rescued stray, Tigger, is now 16+ years. I've had him since he was abandoned by his mama cat, that I also used to feed. It took me 1 week of feeding Tigger outside to gain his trust until I could get near him to pet him and eventually catch him to take him inside.
My second stray, Little Girl, was a tiny little kitten I found walking home from work about a year after rescuing Tigger. She lived for 12 years before having to put her down a few years back. Twelve is young for a cat, but that's 12 years more than she would have had if I didn't take her in, as we had 5 feet of snow that crippled this city the next day.
My newest edition, Snowy, is an all white kitten with 1 green eye and 1 blue eye I heard crying loudly outside my house this past July. He was so Tiny and malnourished, his bones were showing, but he was so unbelievably friendly and trusting. All I said was 'awww, come here baby.' He came running from the side of the house and popped his head of the bushes saying meoooow. Moments after I put food down for him, he allowed me to pet him. That was it, Snowy's days of being a stray were no more. In my arms I took him inside the house to live with me and my kids. Snowy is no longer malnourished and living on the streets. He fattened up quickly and has gotten much bigger. He's very curious, loves plastic bags, boxes, strings. He taunts old man Tigger while he's sleeping. He loves to be brushed, bathed and have his nails clipped, but most of all, he loves my kids, follows them around and cries for them when they leave for school.

Tigger and Little Girl love(d) to go outside daily, but Snowy has traded in his days of stray and won't venture anywhere near the front door. If he's in your arms and you go too close to the front door, he will fight to get far away from it. He definitely wants to be an indoor cat and has taken to his new home nicely.

Sadly, old man Tigger wants no part of him and growls at him constantly.

I can't handle seeing a kitten left on the street to fend for itself, it breaks my heart. I also can't imagine buying a cat when there are so many on the street and in shelters needing a home.

What my rescue does - Animal Lover

[ In Reply To ..]
When you say would not buy a cat, say from CL's, the girl that I work with advertises on there some. We get the animals out of shelters, otherwise these would be put down. Some lady up in NYC pays for everything, complete vetting including spay, neuter, shots and even microchipping and then the lady involved with me sells the kitties for $40.00 each. We have the license, etc. needed to get them free of cost from the shelters, costs us nothing and then this lady I work with only charges $40 per animal. That is an extreme savings on what a person just going to the shelter would have to pay in the first place and then the animal comes fully vetted. What a savings that is. I would love to go at least 2-3 times a week to save more but unable to as we just cannot find enough homes for them.

Before anyone jumps to any conclusions, all 3 of my rescued strays were taken to the vet for check ups immediately.

Tigger received his clean bill of health, was fixed and came home the next day.

Little Girl I had to take to the vet when the streets were cleared of snow a few days later, but she received her clean bill of health and I wait a few months until she was a bit older to get fixed.

Snowy is my first pet since having kids. My family's health (kids and Tigger) is of higher concern to me, so upon Snowy's clean bill of health, he was allowed to became a full fledged member of this house and was a pleasant surprise to my kids when they came home from FL a week later. I am holding off on getting him fixed for a few more months.

Animal Lover: When I say I would not buy a cat, I mean from someone who intentionally breeds them from their home or buy a cat from a pet store as there are already too many cats in shelters and on the street without homes.

What your friend is doing is a form of rescue, a situation like that I totally support and wouldn't consider that as 'buying a cat' as the vet fees are already taken care of for me and I would be reimbursing that expense.

and this is how I met my friend (lady in rescuing) was going to be charged $125.00 by my veterinarian for the cost of spaying. I think the kitties are about $60.00 each so that on top of their shots and the microchipping deal can add up and to get for only 40 is a steal. I wish the lady could do full time as that would put me more out to the shelters getting the animals but alas she is considering going back to school as she perhaps wants to be a teacher. I know her heart lies with the animals though and might continue on an outside basis. Boohoo
I've always used Friends of Animals to defer the full cost of fixing. - Tired&CrankyMT
[ In Reply To ..]

I had my male cat fixed through a Friends of Animals participating vet long ago for a $15.00 donation.
My female cat was spayed for $25.00 by the same vet a year later again through FoA.
Snowy's neutering, now $51.00, will also be by my same vet again using FoA.

I've been taking my pets to this vet for 20 years (my 2 dogs prior to owning cats), so I don't know if it's possible to have Snowy fixed elsewhere for less.

[ In Reply To ..]
The first is that many of them are backyard breeders. They mate unregistered or poorly-bred dogs, and then charge too-high prices for them, in hopes of making some money in the current bad economy. Only thing is, in this economy, it's hard enough to afford to FEED a dog. Who can afford to pay $500 for one? I often wonder how many of them, once they reach an age where no one is going to want to buy them, end up in the pound. That probably has a lot to do with the unusually large number of Chihuahuas and pitbulls the pounds are bursting at the seams with, nowadays.

The second reason that even kittens and mutt puppies have "rehoming fees" for them is to try to discourage bunchers and flippers from taking them. Bunchers pose as loving adopters (often bringing their kids with them) and then selling in bulk to labs, or to dog-fighting rings as bait. Flippers buy them cheap often in certain parts of the country where most things cost less, and then selling them at a high price on the West or East Coast. They usually go for purebreds, especially popular breeds like Chihuahuas, Labs, Pugs, or King Charles Spaniels, or some of the more popular "designer mutts", like "puggles" (beagle/pug cross) or "labradoodles" (lab/poodle cross). Even more importantly, people having to rehome a beloved pet due to circumstances like moving, foreclosure, allergy, or just plain not having time for it anymore, should charge a high enough fee ($25+) to avoid the animal becoming snake food for a python or a boa constrictor, or worse, ending up in the hands of an animal-torturer.

Only met a person 1 time but here is what she did - Animal lover

[ In Reply To ..]
The lady I rescue with tells me this person from southern Georgia did runs of animals where she took dogs, did not matter what kind of breed, up north and could sell dogs for $300 and up just because of lack of animals there. There are purebreeds as well as mutts here in the humane society, lot of which are kill places but we along with other groups just not enough to get all these animals out. Some shelters here absolutely will not let the pit bulls be sold because of the high risk they carry. I know this for a fact, not guessing. They will put them down first IF a rescue group who specializes in pits does not want them. The so called flipper I met that 1 time made a lot of money for non-fancy poochies.
