"America is Losing the Green Energy Race" (to China)

Posted: Oct 18, 2012

The future belongs to renewable energy. If a large part of the world buys much of it from us, like it used to buy cars, we're a wealthy country. If the world, including us, buys most of it from China, they're wealthy and us not so much.

It's not entirely the GOP (and some Dem) leadership's fault, and their buddies' in coal and fracking, for trying to hamstring renewable energy progress under a Democratic administration. We as a people have developed something of a can't-do and won't-do attitude, once unimaginable, and are dragging our national heels like someone insisting those new-fangled horseless carriage things will never work and no sensible person would ride in one anyway.

Why doesn't Britain still rule the world? Short version: They built - their empire on coal energy and refused to change

[ In Reply To ..]
to oil when energy--and the world--moved on. Their wealthy classes were still making lots of money from their ownership of coal and things that ran on it and kept Britain from changing to oil until it had fallen far behind the new oil-based leader--us.

That's the point we're at now.

Why? - Because

republicans only want to drill baby drill and criticize the president for pushing green energy. There are also people, like many of the people on this board, that don't think it is a good idea and make fun of the president for pushing green energy. They just don't get it.

And this is where liberals have missed - the point entirely

[ In Reply To ..]
I have no problem with the president pushing for green energy. The problem is government using taxpayer money to give to "green" companies and those companies go bankrupt anyway totally wasting our taxpayer dollars. I'm all for alternative fuel sources, but right now we don't have an affordable alternative fuel source. So why not drill now to help bring down oil prices while we research alternative energy.

Also, I don't get why liberals are so against republicans who want to drill here in our country when the president gave money to Brazil to drill there. Why drill there and not here? That doesn't even make sense to me.

We have oil and natural gas that would keep us from being dependent on other countries...particularly countries who HATE us. Yes, we are behind when it comes to green technology...so why not use the resources we have until we get up to snuff with the green tech? That sounds more like an all of the above approach than what we are currently doing.

LIKE the Internet anyone? I worked at JPL Pasadena on the - project that put the satellite grid up. SM

Government funded, i.e., funded by us for us. No funding, no internet in our homes.

Used to really like the telephone? Government funded. No funding, there would never have been land lines to at LEAST half the homes across the country for the last century.

Like electricity? BIGGIE here. No government funding, no electricity to what would once have been homes, farms and small towns all across the country. Running power lines is hideously expensive. Business wouldn't have taken power of the cities, and almost everyone would have moved to the city long many decades ago to get it. Life without electricity was HARD. Those without it would have been very poor.

Like roads to go see grandma on? Thank ourselves for them and our tax redistribution system that gathers national money for giant national projects.

And, since every tax dollar is a REDISTRIBUTED dollar, thank our tax system for this big beautiful country with people living good lives all over it instead of being crammed into giant and mostly poverty-stricken cities, like Mexico City or Rio de Janiero, surrounded by impoverished countryside. Because it was only by working together through government projects that we the people of the United States accomplished all this.

Now, green energy? Like our national highway system or the satellite grid, we start with nothing and make it happen. That's who we are, not can't-doers.
No credit goes to shareholders? Just the government? - backwards typist

If people didn't buy shares in companies, they wouldn't have money to do the things you stated either.

It's a win-win situation when shareholders and government believe in a product and the company has PROVEN, without much "maybe it'll work". America has a long way to go to make green energy work.

In the meantime, we should rely on our own resources to get us away from oil-producing countries who hate us. All we're doing there is financing their terrorists.

Who wins the race. - anon

We're losing every race to China. Look around. This is, however, not something to blame on this government only. Both parties have had a hand in giving away our wealth and our future. IMO, much of our woes were accelerated with the signing of NAFTA by President Clinton. We have been falling behind faster ever since. I agree with other poster's response on using what we have until we can develop more green energy and being a lot more cautious as to where we place our hard-earned tax dollars in that effort. It is unfair to blame anything on these representatives alone. Harry Reid and the senate and the totally controlled Democratic congress for the first 2 years of this President's administration did nothing but Obamacare, a waste of everyone's time in my opinion and certainly not something that should have taken all the time and energy of Congress for 2 years. A leader should have been able to work with both sides of the fence and bring them together for the good of the country. Congress is indeed broken but our leader has made little effort to fix it and most of the time, again IMO, has only caused more division because of his arrogance and disdain for anyone else's opinion besides his own.

NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) has...sm - VTMT

nothing to do with China. If China is ultimately the "winner" of the green energy race we have no one to blame except the oil lobby and the politicians who fight against green research technology.

I'm seeing more and more solar energy panels - backwards typist

[ In Reply To ..]
on a few roofs and in some yards around here. Not many because they're so expensive but it's a start. They're mostly on above-average income homeowners. Just a shame that the panels were probably made in China.

A few years ago, there were none. Most people thought they wouldn't help because of our dreary winters.

In a town that "owns" the electricity, a man paid $50K (and he wasn't rich) to have his solar panels installed, only to have the borough tell him he couldn't use them because it was "unsafe." They had the nerve to put a lock on some kind of box so he couldn't access it. He took them to court and won.

Obama's Energy PlanMar 30, 2011
In a speech Wednesday at Georgetown University, President Obama outlined his goals for reducing American energy dependence, heavily emphasizing new technology and alternative sources in addition to "safe and responsible" offshore drilling.
