I really hate

It is 4 a.m. and I have not yet fallen asleep. My nose is stuffy and my throat hurts. I can't turn off the stream of "things I need to deal with" inside my brain. I bet I fall asleep 5 minutes before the alarm goes off. blah....

I take melatonin before bed. The doc prescribed a very low dose of Effexor for me which is an off label use for insomnia. I am very sensitive to caffeine--even 1 cup of coffee during the day will bother my sleep. Getting outside and getting some exercise and sunlight will help with sleeping. Do not eat or drink alcohol within a couple of hours of going to bed. Take a shower or bath an hour or so before going to bed.

Some say to write down all your worries and upcoming tasks so you can forget about them. If you do wake up, sometimes it helps to get up and read something for a half an hour or so and then try again.

Well, I was able to get 2 hours sleep, then up for an hour and then an hour nap. Then worked, then vacuumed the upstairs floor and steam cleaned the carpets, did three loads of laundry. Now I'm tired and I'm stinky.

Thank you for the ideas. I had taken melatonin 5 mg with two Aleve tablets at 9:30 p.m., then another melatonin 5 mg at 3 a.m with one 1-1/2-ounce vodka martini. I think I will go to the pool this evening to see if I can avoid a repeat of last night. still blah...

What works for my insomniac husband si - a chilly bedroom (poor me!)

My husband has insomnia, and it's extremely aggravated by being too warm.

Do you think you could tolerate a slightly cooler temperature in the bedroom? That way you're warm and snuggly under your covers, but no *too* warm, which can keep you awake and make you toss and turn a lot more than if you are cooler.

Valerian and melatonin combined works for me some of the time, but I usually have to take amytriptyline. I was only getting 2-3 hours of sleep for a long time and trying not to get a rx, but I couldn't stand it any longer and called my doc. When I take the amytriptyline, I sleep like a baby for 7-8 hours or more depending on how much of it I take.

The cool bedroom is a must for me, too.

Gentle Yoga Stretches - see msg

Buy a book and check out how to do some gentle yoga stretches. DO NOT think you need to twist yourself into a pretzel like the pictures tell you.

Get on a routine where you do this about an hour before bedtime. Works like a charm for me.

In general, I do the yoga twice a day. Once in the morning after my coffee and I've moved around a bit, then once before bedtime. It's extremely relaxing.

I tried a low-dose amitryptyline (5-10 mg) and it worked like a charm, but I have an unusual side-effect of paresthesias after I've used it for about a month, so I had to stop. You could try that also if you're not wanting to try the yoga. The yoga recommendation came from my doctor because I have fibromuyalgia and it had the added benefit of helping me sleep like a baby.

things seem to be going great. Now they are not. There was a point I had 2 jobs, but found out I could not do 1 because of software requirements and the other is about to fire me.
