Hate to be a downer

Posted: Dec 30, 2010

But New Year's is probably my least fave holiday.  There's no particular reason for it.  I've never had anything traumatic happen on that night.  I just don't get excited for it.  DH and I went out once or twice when we could get a sitter, but I still didn't get excited for it.  I think it's because of the letdown from Christmas.  From now until spring, there isn't anything going on and we live in the Northeast, so the weather will be ugly.  Maybe when I get old and we retire to a warmer climate (we'd like to), I could enjoy a party on the beach or something.

So who has plans and what are they?  As I said, we're not doing much of anything.  We might take the kids to the movies.  We've been wanting to see the Little Fockers.  I doubt we stay up for the midnight festivities.  On New Year's Day, I'm planning to take down the Christmas decorations and do some cleaning.  I'd like to hibernate until it's nicer weather, but I don't think my kids will let me.

Happy New Year's to everyone.  Let's hope it's a good one!

Me, too - No Big Deal

I have never liked New Year's Eve. I never saw the point either. Everybody parties and celebrates, and the next day life goes on. It's not like all the bad things are gone and suddenly the next year will only bring happiness. I will be alone again and used to it.

We have quiet traditions, but I enjoy them. - Mummers Day

[ In Reply To ..]
Our children are grown, but hubby will be off from work tomorrow. We're going to a matinee showing of "The King's Speech", and then having dinner with friends. They've invited us to spend the night, but we'll probably drive home. Either way, we'll have a glass of wine at midnight with a wish for a good year ahead. On New Year's Day, we go to church, watch the Mummers Parade on t.v., later maybe some football, and enjoy pork sandwiches and sauerkraut for good luck. When we were MUCH younger, we'd be out all night in South Philly, going from party to party and celebrating up until parade time, and then we'd be up and down Broad Street enjoying the parade and visiting with friends and family. I miss those days, but I also enjoy the quiet celebration, too. For me, I see it as just a little bookmark in the Pages of Life. We stop for a minute to savor last year's chapter before turning the page to begin the next chapter.

New Year's Day - No Big Deal

Actually, I like New Year's Day better than New Year's Eve. I will get together with my sister, brother, and some other family for pork and sauerkraut. We are having lemon sponge pie for dessert. Just the thought of anything lemon cheers me up!

It's a tradition in Philadelphia over 100 years old. - Philly MT

[ In Reply To ..]
It grew up from an old European custom of "mumming", going from house to house on the new year wishing well and basically begging for goodies. Now, it's a strange sort of combination of Mardi Gras and maybe the Rose Bowl parade without the flowers. There are comics who put on topical lampooning displays, fancy divisions of beautifully constructed costumes full of sequins and glitz, and the highlight of it all are the string bands with musicians decked out in sequins, bright colors, feathers, playing banjos and saxes etc. They do elaborate routines before judges in front of City Hall. The music is fantastic. It's a real spectacle. I'm sure you can see video on YouTube if you search for mummers.
Wow! Sounds great! It seems like Mardi- - Gras mixed with Trick-or-Treat! nm

New Year's - Tara

I have never been a real big fan for it either, as an adult that is; however, because it is such a hyped up holiday, I do try to make it special for my kids so that when they are older they can associate that day with the good times they had at home. I generally bring my kids to the store that afternoon to pick out snacks, drinks, etc., After we've eaten supper, which they choose what we have, we play board games for a couple of hours while munching on the goodies, we play music, visit, laugh, and have fun, and then when it gets closer to the time, we settle in front of the TV to flip back and forth between channels watching the performers up until the countdown, of which the kids fully participate in. After midnight, we play another quick game or two, clean up, and it's time for bed. Nothing real big, but it's something special for the kids. When I was a kid, I would have my cousin come over every New Year's and this is exactly what we would do, every year, and I still remember it like it was yesterday and I remember what fun we had!!

New Years Eve - sm

Just another day. The only thing I do different is stay off the roads because all the drunks are out. Other than that, just another day. Then I spend the next several months trying to remember to change the date on checks that I write. LOL

Used to go out in my 20s but now I'm in bed long before midnight, just like every other night. It's another over-hyped "holiday" like Valentine's day and others, trying to get people to spend money and pretend they are having fun!

I hate the re-hash of the tragedies and the deaths of 2010 and can't help but wonder what tragedies and deaths we'll look back on at the end of 2011.

2011 worries me bit - since it'll be the 10-yr anniversary - of 9/11. I hope there's no "sequel"!

[ In Reply To ..]
Some of the things I worry about in 2011:

More loss of income, or losing my job entirely.

N. & S. Korea will probably go to war in earnest this year, and of course, you know who will have to become involved militarily! The good ol' USA! That would make THREE wars that we would be fighting concurrently.

I'm concerned that this is the year that AHDI is going to roll out some huge new scheme that will further twist the thumbscrews on American MTs.

There are some big political changes I worry about, but this isn't the Politics Board, so those worries I'll keep to myself.

The price of gasoline is going to skyrocket again this coming year. Predictions are that this time it'll hit $5/gal. I worry that our gov't. leaders are so very much controlled by Big Oil, that all innovative ideas to get this country OFF of oil as fuel will once again be shelved instead of embraced, leaving the rest of us unwilling hostages of the Oil Industry.

On a smaller scale, I have the feeling that my landlord might sell my apartment building. I love where I currently live, and my relatively low rent, and I worry that once again, when I can least afford to, I'll have to move.

Usually, for whatever reason, uneven-numbered years are better for me than even-numbered ones. But I feel kind've uneasy about this one...

NYE - also curious about ages of everyone - 1mt

[ In Reply To ..]
I am 45 (coming up on 46-yuck) and will be staying home as well with my two teenage children and hubby. Every year for NYE we have crab legs and sometimes will grill steaks as well. Probably will have both again this year since the weather in the midwest is almost 50 degrees, woohoo. We usually all fall asleep before midnight. NYE is no longer a big deal to me. It used to be in my younger days, had to go out and do the partying thing, but not anymore. I am very content with just staying home with the people that make me the happiest in my life, my 2 kids. One thing that does bother me though is how FAST the time goes by. I look back at past occurrences and cannot believe how much time has passed and how quickly it seemed to go.

I am curious to know how old everyone is.

New Year's Eve/Day - LinK

[ In Reply To ..]
We've been going to house parties for many years with good friends. Usually just across the street or a few miles away so we don't have to drive far. We have good food and stay up watching New Years Rockin' Eve and wish everyone a happy new year at midnight. I never really got into the holiday either, although when I first met my husband we went out to our local hotel for the night where they used to have huge parties. My older daughter is going to an overnight teen party at the local church and my younger one loves to stay up way past midnight.

New Years Day we're going to the casino with friends and having their huge buffet and maybe gamble a little.

Everyone be safe and Happy New Year.
By the way, I'm 48.

NYE - staying in and staying safe - MT-Cali

Thank God for January 2nd !! Looking forward to waking up after the NYE hoopla is over. Too much hype for me too. I am looking forward to 2011 and all the blessings coming my way. Also very content simply staying close to home and enjoying my family and friends. However, I used to go to NYE parties when I was in my 20's but that became boring and uneventful for us. We prefer to stay in and stay safe on NYE.

Happy New Year to all !!

New Year's isn't really my thing. I don't hate it - sm - MT Wordz

or anything, but the way it's celebrated (i.e., public drunkenness) leaves me cold. I don't like crowded, noisy parties (thus I'm skipping the one all my friends are attending tonight!) Plus half of them are sick with the flu and are attending anyway. NOOOOO thank you!

I can't stand being around people who are intoxicated. Not only are they obnoxiouis in that state, but they make me nervous. The big fireworks celebration in my city always comes apart at the end, when the drunks start throwing bottles for no particular reason, and the cops start arresting everything within an arm's reach.

And of course, then there are all the drunk drivers. On NY Eve, by sundown I like to be safely home and off the highways. And in just about every town, there are also the idiots who think NY Eve is a good time to get out their handguns and fire them straight up into the air. During the handgun "witching hour" (roughly midnight to 12:30 AM) in some towns you'll find most of the cops (and anyone else who is still sober) safely parked under freeway overpasses, bridges, and other protective structures.

New Year's Day is okay, though!

Here's hoping that 2011 will be a better year for medical transcriptionsts in America,

MT Wordz

I am so looking forward to a new year. 2010 consisted of loss wages due to losing accounts and having to work for minimum wage on "busy work" for over a month until new accounts came on board, an aunt who died the week before Christmas, and today I received a summons for jury duty. Okay, I feel better getting all of that off my chest. NY Eve is usually quiet around here, but NY Day is filled with phone conversations (and Facebook chat this year) with family and friends on the other side of the country. Looking forward to that. Happy New Year everyone.

I hate any holiday that has fireworks - but I do like New Year Eve - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
First, I hate anything that has fireworks and loud noises. My poor kitty goes into hiding and if it gets too loud she gets sick.

However, I do like New Years Eve. Not for the party sense though. I can't remember the last time I celebrated NYE out. Maybe 32 years ago. I just don't like crowds. But I like to sit home and watch movies and munch on snacks the whole night. Tonight it's hot artichoke dip on crackers and chili dip made with cream cheese and tortillas. Maybe I'll even splurge and have a Bud. ha ha

I like New Years thought because I always think the new year will be better.

Psychology Of Hate, 7 Stages Of Hate.Aug 27, 2012
I got to wondering once again what is behind some of the behaviors we see on a lot of forums, so I went looking. This link discusses one model, explained by a former FBI behavioral analyst, that is easy to apply to on-line forum discussions, where behaviors would, of course, play out in the first four stages. (The discussion on skinhead groups can be skipped over, if desired, with the actual 7 stages explained below.) It was the last section, though, on how indulging in hate tends to play out ...
