I absolutely hate spiders!

Posted: Feb 28, 2011

I hate when I am sitting here typing at 2:30 in the morning and a spider is crawling up the wall!  I am absolutely terrified of spiders to the point that it is hard for me to kill them.  I did it though, used the fly swatter, hopefully it died as it is behind furniture so it is hard to see but now I really do not want to put my feet on the floor to continue typing.  Having real panic feeling like it is coming out from there, big and ******.  One time, I was cleaning my house (long ago) and came across a big spider in the bathroom and could not go any further.  I was literally paralysed with fear.  I checked on it occasionally until my husband came home from work, but stayed on the couch most of the day.  Yeah, I am that afraid of them!

I have cans of Raid in strategic rooms throughout the house :-) Like you, I also can barely stand to get close enough to one to kill it. My entire family knows - If they hear me scream -- it's a spider. They come in asking, "Where is it? How big is this one?"

I used to be scared of them - but not so much anymore

I really don't like killing them, so when they come along I try to get them into a lidded container, and put them outside where they belong - unless they're the fast-moving variety; then I just let them get out of my space, and usually that doesn't take too long. Spiders by nature are not going to seek out humans to crawl on. They will stay out of your way most of the time. I tell my family, if they see a spider in my office, that it's one of my "fuzzy buddies" :).

And then I put it outside.

What I learned about avoiding spiders and spider bites - -- from real experience here! sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Avoid spiders/spider bites! Nearly every single house has not only spiders but brown recluses!

1. Do not allow your bed/headboard to touch the wall or curtains. When spiders walk down the curtain, you want them to crawl all the way down to the floor. If your bedding or headboard is against the curtain or wall or too close, they will just walk right out onto your bed.

2. Lift your bedskirts, ladies! It's best not to have one at all -- keeps it dark under there where they love to hide out!

3. Don't let any bedding touch the floor! This means the bedskirt, too. Every item touching the floor is a potential ladder for the spider(s) to climb up onto your bed.

4. The most effective spider killer are sticky pads. The spider is captured on the sticky surface and dies. Place a large sticky pad under each of your bed postings - this way the only way onto your bed is up the posters and they get caught on the sticky pads before they can get to the post!

Now about the brown recluse bite: Venomous. Had to have hyperbaric treatments (another mind over matter situation being sealed in that tube for 3 hours and taking 20 minutes to decompress) for 2 weeks and several painful surgical debridements and then 6 months of healing. Leaves a scar.

Avoid it all. Place the sticky pads anywhere you suspect spider activity.

Good luck!

Great idea, those sticky pads! That would be a - good way to catch them, as well! nm

I'm just the opposite. They fascinate me. I have two tarantulas and 3 very large spiders that I keep in my office with me.

One of my tarantulas is over 10 years old! One of my spiders is almost a big as a plate and she is beautiful.

I have their terrariums along shelves above my work station. I know a lot of people hate and fear spiders. I don't. They are beautiful and colorful and it's amazing to see them build their webs and homes.

also ******no language please*******

I also have two snakes and several tropical poison arrow frogs...

Although I'll kill 'em if they're in my house, I do agree - that theyre amazing creatures. - sm

Where I live we have what are called "Garden Spiders" that you don't see all year, but in October they get really big (pregnant?), and build these amazing webs. They're "orb" spiders that build those huge, amazing, "Charlotte's Web" type webs. (Although so far, none of them have written any messages in any of the webs I've seen!) I'm always in awe of the sheer engineering genious behind them. I often wonder how they get those first, long, bridge-like strands set up that they use as anchors to build from. Usually they're long distances - too far for them to jump. So maybe that first strand is non-sticky, and they attach it at one end, and then just walk to the other place they're attaching it to? I suppose they could just point their butt toward the object and shoot the strand, like Spiderman might do, but again, wouldn't it be hard to aim something as delicate and breeze-affected as a strand of spiderweb silk? (As you can see, I spend far too much time thinking about things like this, and not enough time thinking about working!)

That is so cool! - Rainy

I'm not a spider fan, but catch and release those in the house. Strangely, the bigger they are, the less afraid I am. Not saying that I would want to touch a tarantula, though! And, yes, some spiders (snakes and frogs, too) are beautiful. Sounds like you have a very interesting household.

Ewwwww!!!! You are the first I've ever heard of - I absolute hate spiders

[ In Reply To ..]
that likes spiders (besides guys maybe) I cannot stand spiders or anything that crawls. Small ones I can deal with, but anything bigger than an eraser I can't stand. However, DH hates them as much as I do so I have to deal with catching it in a tupperware jar and letting it loose outside (down the road 7 houses away so it doesn't find its way back in). I don't want to kill them, just don't want them inside my house. When we lived in WA we had the huge brown hairy recluse ones. Hated those with a passion. Black widows though....I will kill in a second.

Once about 15 years ago I worked with a bunch of people that thought my fear of spiders was funny. As a joke they put one (don't remember if it was real, dead, or fake) underneath my work papers on my desk. I saw that screamed and passed out. That's the last time they ever played that kind of joke on me.

I just don't know what it is about spiders. Snakes I'm fine with , spiders I can't take.

I just want to say, I get soooo annoyed at people's reactions like this. I posted once that I like sushi, got a string of "ewwwwws and yucks and gross... I posted once I like oysters and got groooooossss, and ewwws and sickkks...

Can't you just keep your dislikes to yourself and stop the childish "ew's with trailing "w" and other nonsense.

So she likes spiders! She's not a freak!

Passed out?? Really? Time to visit the doctor honey.

What helped me get over my fear of them was - having to deal with them myself. (sm)

I respect them (to a certain point), and feel their intelligence is something to be admired, as much as one can "admire" a bug for anything! LOL

But my rule is, if they're outdoors, in their intended environment, I won't harm them. But if they're indoors, they've made a grave mistake. Although I'll catch and release moths, ladybugs, butterflies, and even slugs and salamanders that stray inside, those spiders gotta go!

Small ones are easy - a wad of wet tissue paper will both catch & drown them at the same time. Big spiders are harder. Not wanting to swat-and-miss, or worse, grab one with Kleenex and have it escape up my arm, back onto the floor, I tailor my attack based on where it's located. The toughest spot is in that right-angle corner between the ceiling and the wall. What often works is to take a few Kleenex, wet them and wad them at the end of a broomstick, and then spray some Raid on the wetted tissue, as well. If there's anything below the spider on the floor where it could fall and hide, I move that, if possible. Then from the safe distance of the other end of the broom handle, I just crush the offending arachnid with my deadly Raid-infused broom-handle tissue. The secret here is to push - and HOLD. Give the Raid time to work, just in case the spider wasn't crushed. That usually does the trick. Then, after a minute or so, you should find a dead spider on the tissue. I just keep it the broom-handle, walk over to the garbage or the toilet, and dispose of it. Even if it does fall off the wall, and happens to still be alive when it hits the floor, after breathing in all that Raid, it's not going far! So even if you lose sight of it in that manner, the chances are, the next time you move the bookcase or boxes it fell behind, you'll find him.... dead as a doornail.

I used to be that way until we moved into the country - Backwards Typist

Took me a few years but I can now tolerate them. Still don't like them, though. We have what DH calls "wood" spiders. Look like baby tarantulas. I hate spring and fall. That's when they come into the house. They never make it back outside.

I was watching TV one night and felt something crawling on my arm, looked, and it was a large wood spider. Out of instinct, I immediately flung my arm outward. Still don't know where he went. For 2 weeks, kept looking and watching. Guess I scared him and he went out the way he got in.

Now I'm getting the shivers so I gotta stop talking about it. :-)

Spiders, I am okay with... - Kendra

what terrifies me is scorpions. I grew up in the desert and every so often, one or more would make its way into our house. They are hard to kill, and having been stung by one as a kid, I know it HURTS. Thinking about scorpions gives me the heebiejeebies. I HATE scorpions!

I've never seen a scorpion. But here in N. Calif. - we have these giant yellow slugs - see/msg

[ In Reply To ..]
called "banana slugs". Some of them are almost the size of a real banana! They ARE beautiful, though. I used to wonder why they were that color - it didn't seem very good camouflage. But in my walks through the redwoods I began to realize that the bay laurels that also grow in those same woods were always dropping long, yellow leaves on the ground, which are the same color as the slugs, which also frequent the same areas.

The first time I saw a banana slug, it was on a fence in the backyard of where I shared a house at that time. I didn't think it was real - I thought it was ceramic. It seemed like something my landlady would put in her cute, and oh-so-perfect backyard. I walked up to it thinking "Wow - what a cute little ceramic slug!", and reached out to touch it. Eeeek! Turns out it wasn't ceramic, at all!

I lived at another place near the same woods, where the front door was but a little too high, and all manner of things would walk in. After once accidentally stepping on a banana slug on the living room rug one night while making a bathroom trip, that I didn't see because the lights were off (yuck!), I made it a point to always turn on the lights after that. And on those occasions where a slug had gotten inside, I just picked it up with a pair of hot-dog tongs, and put it out in the garden where it belonged.

I heard that if you put a strip of copper down, that slugs and snails won't cross it because, combined with their slime, it gives off a mild electricl shock. I never got to test this theory, though, but I did put down a line of salt. Salt will keep them out, but I felt terrible doing it, because the slugs that touched the salt would shrivel up and die. I only did that once, and then went back to turning on the lights and using my hot-dog tongs to evict stray slugs.

When I lived in Washington, we would get... - Kendra

[ In Reply To ..]
some sizable slugs, not yellow, though. They are a little slimy, but they don't bother me much, except when they would leave their slime tracks on the window. I never wanted to kill them, though. I did find that the easiest way to kill a scorpion is to catch it and put it in the freezer. ;)

Thanks for the laugh. sm - Rainy

>>>"Wow - what a cute little ceramic slug!" and reached out to touch it. <<<

That's something I would say and do. LOL. I also made note that if invited to a BBQ at your house, not to have the hot dogs unless I see new tongs in a package first.
LOL - well, I DO wash the tongs afterwards. Slug- - slime is not impervious to soap & water.

Though actually, from what I hear, the ingredients of most hot dogs is far scarier than a little slug-slime!

This link discusses one model, explained by a former FBI behavioral analyst, that is easy to apply to on-line forum discussions, where behaviors would, of course, play out in the first four stages. (The discussion on skinhead groups can be skipped over, if desired, with the actual 7 stages explained below.) It was the last section, though, on how indulging in hate tends to play out ...
