I (heart) South Carolina!

Posted: Aug 12, 2010

Great beaches and great peaches! Just thinking today, how fortunate I am to live just one state *north* of SC (as I sliced and diced my way through a $6 half bushel of perfectly ripe and juicy peaches, shipped just up the road). My account is a hospital where I get reports about "blueberry workers," which I had never heard of. We have to pay some serious money for blueberries down here, but I imagine "up there" they are plentiful and cheap. The cheapest I have seen here recently is $1 for a pint at a discount grocery store, and they were being snatched up by the armful.

This probably sounds like a 5th grade geography question-- but what's in season where you live? Do Iowans really have corn coming out their ears (sorry-- corn, ears). I wish we had orange groves, pecan orchards... Someone from Alabama told me he would just go out in the backyard and gather pecans from underneath the tree... Super! You just can't beat local produce, no matter how efficient they make the packing and the shipping. Tomatoes from a garden are so sweet and tangy!

I'm in southeastern PA, and I was raised in South Jersey. (Capitalize South Jersey, because it's like its own state and is waaaay different from North Jersey or "Joisey".) The entire Delaware Valley is enjoying a good harvest. The tomatoes are juicy, the corn is sweet, and the peppers are deee-lish! Peaches are coming in, too, as are plums, cucumbers, eggplant, and new potatoes. South Jersey, particularly the area new Hammonton in the Pine Barrens, is the blueberry capital of the world. High bush berries were developed right there, and they were wonderful this year. That crop comes in about middle June and runs through July, so they are pretty much gone. But while they were peaking, I made pies, jam and syrup. I also froze berries for winter baking. I've started canning my pickles, peaches and tomatoes now. Oh, and the cantaloupe! Don't want to forget those! Yum! It's been a really good year for crops.

We just finished cherry harvest. Now, peaches, apricots, cucumbers, zucchini, corn, melon (watermelon and canteloupe), strawberries from Western Washington. When the weather cools down a bit, apples and tomatoes will be in season.

I have to say I love PA because we have a wonderful blend of mountains and beautiful farm land. I live in York County, but in Lancaster County we have beautiful farms and Amish country. I remember I was with a friend one day late afternoon, and we stopped in a restaurant in Lancaster County in the countryside across from an Amish farm. We were coming out of the restaurant just at sunset. The sky was that gorgeous pink/purple color, and up against the horizon was a horse pulling an Amish buggy. You could see the Amish farmer in the buggy. I don't think I will ever forget that sight as long as I live. The horse-driven black buggy against the sky was simply breathtaking. Thanks for making me remember that.

My state has spent over $300 million of state taxes and only 44 have signed up for AHC.  It is not working in our state. We sure could have used $300 million to help the homeless or redo our severely crippled bridges, but noooooo, we had to spend it on ridiculous useless crap to get 44 people signed up and those people's deductibles are so high that they are still paying out of pocket for their care.  ...
