this is breaking my heart

Posted: Jan 8, 2014

Background:  My darling son had a brain tumor when he was 3 and had surgery to have it removed.  It grew back twice and he had two subsequent surgeries.  Although he is very bright and functional and on a day to day basis you'd never guess he had this, it did affect his learning ability somewhat.  He had to go to a sort of alternative high school but did get a diploma.  Then he wanted to try college so we let him.  He passed one course.  He has worked at some odd jobs, but still has this dream of going to college.  He has tried once or twice in the past, and has managed to pass two more courses while failing or having to drop others; his GPA is less than 1.  Again this spring he wanted to try so I enrolled him again against my better judgment (junior college, 9 hours, easiest classes I could find in the "basics", and he's already on scholastic probation so must get a C in them).

Yesterday he came in talking to me about how once he passes these classes and a few more, did I think his dad would let him transfer to the university.  I know it's going to be hard enough for him to pass these classes.  I honestly can't see him ever going to the university, but his friends have gone to college and most are almost done, and that's still his big dream.  Honestly, I just don't know what's going to become of him.

I didn't want to hurt his feelings so I told him when he got 30 hours completed, we'd talk about it.

;

I would encourage him to do 1 or 2 classes - at a time.

If his dream is to finish college, good for him. He can do it very slowly, like many of us do, and he will struggle, but it sounds like the will is strongly there, and you know what they say--when there's a will, there's a way!

There's a TED talk by a woman who suffered a terrible accident and ended up with major learning disabilities--her doctor told her she would never make it through college, but she struggled and eventually made it all the way through grad school. Her talk is very inspiring and your son could very well end up with the same story, giving an inspirational talk to others the way she did. It took her many years, but she eventually did it and it has repaired her self-esteem.

I would just let him take some courses, little by little. Even if no big career comes of it and all that, it would still be enriching and good brain exercise. It's never a waste, but the more he "fails" the worse off he's going to feel. Maybe he can kind of get into a work/study class, so he can gain some work skills.

Meanwhile, even if he's not in college, or he is just taking a course or 2, it would be good if he could learn some life skills so he can work to either support himself or partially support himself. There are programs who help people like your son become vital members of society.

Check around your community center or cultural center if you have one. They may be able to guide you.

I think you are doing everything you can and encouraging him is always a good way to go no matter. If you have insurance and can get him to talk to a counselor, maybe that would be a way to go. When you gave him a goal of 30 hours completed, I thought that was a great way to go too. Good for you and hang in there. If you have to, take it one day at a time or for that matter, 1 hour at a time. Take care.

Learning Disabled College Programs - Google it -- lots of them

[ In Reply To ..]
There are colleges that have excellent programs for learning disabled students. Some specialize in it. They are very successful.

Junior colleges, despite their "friendly" community-oriented reputations that make it appear they are for everybody, are probably the worst choice for LD. They have low completion rates to begin with, no matter what the program. Faculty, especially teaching "general requirement" courses, are usually part-time and nt particularly top-notch.

I have taken courses at major universities, graduate schools, state universities, and, after all that, a junior college. I had to actually STRUGGLE to pass what should have been no-brainer courses because the teaching was nonexistent, faculty were awful, and the focus was on rote memorization and turning in meaningless make-work assignments. Grades were based on whether you guessed ... literally ... guessed the right choice from answers where not one was correct.

Find a program where he can succeed.
