Friend diagnosed with stage 1B esophageal cancer

Posted: May 19, 2010

Hi all,

I have a guy friend who is only 42 years old that was diagnosed with stage 1B esophageal cancer. They were able to remove the tumor and he is now going through radiation treatments 3 days a week for 4 weeks.

I would like to make up a care package to give to him, but unsure what I should put in it. I was thinking some inspirational reading material and he is a huge Led Zeppelin fan. I have also heard Ensure or Boost is something good to be taking as a supplement and have thought of some vitamins, too. But, maybe I could get him a gift card so he can just go and get what he wants, too. Not sure what else to put in...please any suggestions!

Thanks!

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's condition, but what a nice thing for you to be doing for him. I would suggest books, ITunes gift card, gas card (for all those trips to the radiation center), restaurant gift card, maybe a CD or other Led Zeppelin paraphenalia from Ebay. You could also include a donation to Relay for Life. We just had that in our community last weekend, and they were selling luminarias in memory or in honor of someone. HTH

Maybe some light reading, as well.... - Kendra

Inspirational reading is great, but sometimes its also great to just get lost in a good story, or maybe for a man, a good men's magazine like Maxim or something. Just a thought.

How about some Three Stooges DVDs. Guys love them. I believe laughter is the best medicine. Also some clear soups might be good - with the radiation he probably wouldn't be able to swollow much. You are a great friend!!! I hope he has a fast and speedy recovery -he is young which bodes in his favor...

Hope your friend recovers quickly...my father-in-law was just diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer that has spread to his femur and lymph nodes, so no surgery, may six months to a year to live. I am sooooooooo tired of cancer affecting my family. Anyway I wish a speedy recovery for your friend, and it sounds like he is lucky to have you as a friend!

What a great friend you are, my mom had breast cancer and their taste buds disappear, I found the best kinds of gifts were just to be with them, take them to the doctor visits and just be there, that;s the greatest gift you can give someone who is scared and has to go through treatment. The best of luck to him. Inspirational reading is great, music, funny movies, hand lotion with vitamins as your skin becomes dry from tx, ensure would be great, vitamin water, soft pjs as their skin becomes dry and itchy and sensitive, hope this helps

If he's a Zeppelin fan.....sm - Scoobie Doobie

I would get him the latest by MUSE! He probably has all the Zeps, and this band is amazing - great rock and roll! Hugs to your frined. He sounds like a really cool guy!

Mother Has Stage IV Lung Cancer... Not Sure What Happens NextFeb 04, 2010
My mother was diagnosed the last week of December with lung cancer that has spread to the liver, adrenal glands, and brain.  She had complications such as left-sided weakness, internal bleeding (last week transfused with 6 units of blood) and also has a blood clot in her leg.  The oncologist pretty much said he couldn't treat the cancer any longer because of the possibility of more internal bleeding.  My parents feel like they've just been written off and that my mo ...

Looking For Anyone That Has Been Diagnosed With Sarcoidosis - SmApr 04, 2011
For almost 11 years I have been experiencing random symptoms, stroke-like symptoms at times with paralysis in my face, tingling, numbness, weakness in my left arm, as well as pain in my joints, especially my feet, knees, hands and hips.  On top of this there are days when I ache, hurt and just feel so bad in general that I do not want to climb out of bed.  Two weeks ago I experienced another stroke-like event, ended up seeing a neurologist who ordered MRI (negative for stroke thankfull ...

Diagnosed With Paget's Of BreastJan 03, 2011
This has took me a while to come to terms with it, but I was diagnosed December 3 with Paget's of the right breast. This was misdiagnosed a year ago as eczema. I have to wait and have my 2nd MRI (as I freaked out with the 1st one) on the 31st of this month with a sedative this time, and an ultrasound to find out how far it has progressed. The mammogram is completely clear though and they did not find any lumps. Much prayers are appreciated as I have a 12 and 6 year old and husband at home. ...

Spoke to the doctor's PA yesterday.  Had to stop taking metformin as it made my ankles and feet swell.  So they have given me glipizide.  He told me to make sure I eat 30 minutes after taking the medication.  Two questions: 1.  Does it have to be 30 minutes or can I eat sooner if I want.  I'm not a breakfast person and a lot of times I forget to eat, so was wondering if I can take the medication then fix myself something and eat it then or do I have to wa ...

Philly Theater Company To Stage Musical ComedyJul 08, 2017
Normally, when we get a press release from a local theater company about its latest work, the press release includes, you know, the name of the play. But Philly theater company Lightning Rod Special bucked that trend this week went they sent us a notice announcing its musical comedy about abortion, which debuts in August at the Painted Bride. “We were going with ‘Fetus Chorus,’” explains co-creator Alice Yorke, pictured below. “But there were a lot of mixed feelings about it. I Have CancerSep 24, 2011
I consider this my MT community.  I feel we have a sense of sisterhood here. CancerSep 07, 2013
I just had an ultrasound and a biopsy the other day for postmenopausal bleeding. The doctor said he had to test for cancer of course. I found out by many sources that cancer cannot live in your body if your pH balance is over 7.1. So I thought I would share some of this with you. Cancer cannot survive in an alkaline body, which is pH over 7.1. Keep your pH balance over 7.1 by eating these alkaline foods. Of course, the ultimate goal is balance. Eating too many alkalizing foods can lead to its ...

"Hamilton" Actor Harasses Pence On Stage, Nov 19, 2016
Vice President-elect Mike Pence took in the hit Broadway hip-hop musical “Hamilton” last night in New York City. As you could imagine, he was booed when he entered the theater in the deep blue state. But it gets worse. The performers actually took a stance against Pence, as well. For real. The vice president-elect was greeted with a mix of cheers and jeers as he entered, and exited, “Hamilton.” And in between, he received a lecture from Brandon Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr in ...

Followup On My Skin CancerJan 11, 2010
Well, I had my surgery on New Year's Eve, and came away with an 8 cm incision wrapping around my dorsal forearm.  I got the pathology back and it was a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, 3 x 3.5 cm, all margins clear.  Right now looking at the incision it's hard to imagine that he's correct when he says it will eventually be just a very thin white line.  It looks like someone tried to cut my arm off.  I have to go back every three months for a recheck ...
