... ductal carcinoma in situ.  I have to have more surgery (not enough clean margin the first time), and supposed to have radiation and take tamoxifen.  I am uneasy about the radation and tamoxifen.  Anyone with any personal experience with this?

I was also approached about being in a study to have my tissue tested for HER2 and possbily take trastuzumab, which they normally don't do with DCIS (and are beginning research to see if this would be beneficial).  I'm not sure what to think of this either, as there are some pretty unpleasant side effects listed, and it sounds like insurance companies sometimes refuse to pay for those who enter studies.  Any input on this will be appreciated as well.

So sorry to hear - of your diagnosis

...and wish you the very best.

I hope others have a lot to offer you in terms of encouragement and experience with this. I was just wondering, though, whether experimental protocols are done free of charge to the patient. After all, they provide a lot of publishable data (the lifesource of academia) to researchers and help to develop protocols for all future patients.

Best wishes.

Thanks :) - Shawna

Thanks for the well wishes.

I have to read through the study paperwork again, as certain parts were a bit confusing. They may cover the drug they wish to give me (not sure), but I know it seemed to say some insurance companies would not cover the normal treatment then or any issues that arise from the study drug (which can cause things like congestive heart failure, lung problems, etc.).

Just doesn't seem fair to me - sm

If insurance companies won't pay for any issues that arise from the study drug, doesn't it make you wonder why anyone would volunteer to be part of a study? So much progress in medicine is a direct result of trials like the one you're considering.

Not only do researchers benefit enormously from the data garnered from trials, but the drug companies also profit! Have you thought of asking the pharmaceutical company to foot the bill? Grrrrrrr

Sorry to vent. Again, I wish you a speedy recovery.

I had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation! Actually you just have to figure it's a bump in the road in life. I don't know about taking tamoxifen though - I'd research, research and ask them questions out the yang yang. Also look into acupuncture and Chinese/herbal medicines to aid in the side effects with the radiation. There is a good website YME (I believe) and they have survivors who will talk to you. Go to support groups. You are stronger than you think! One day at a time - soon it will be in there rearview mirror!

Looking For Anyone That Has Been Diagnosed With Sarcoidosis - SmApr 04, 2011
For almost 11 years I have been experiencing random symptoms, stroke-like symptoms at times with paralysis in my face, tingling, numbness, weakness in my left arm, as well as pain in my joints, especially my feet, knees, hands and hips.  On top of this there are days when I ache, hurt and just feel so bad in general that I do not want to climb out of bed.  Two weeks ago I experienced another stroke-like event, ended up seeing a neurologist who ordered MRI (negative for stroke thankfull ...

Son Diagnosed With SchizophreniaJun 27, 2012
Please pray for my son and myself and our entire family.  He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and has been having a very rough time of things.  He was hospitalized 11/11/2011 and has been put on medication that works for him, and although he is better, we have very little support for mental health patients in my state, especially young patients) his age is 19).  I have done everything I can for him, and have gone to the mental health clinic and psychiatrists in our area.  ...

Diagnosed With Paget's Of BreastJan 03, 2011
This has took me a while to come to terms with it, but I was diagnosed December 3 with Paget's of the right breast. This was misdiagnosed a year ago as eczema. I have to wait and have my 2nd MRI (as I freaked out with the 1st one) on the 31st of this month with a sedative this time, and an ultrasound to find out how far it has progressed. The mammogram is completely clear though and they did not find any lumps. Much prayers are appreciated as I have a 12 and 6 year old and husband at home. ...

at the airport don't matter for him-- he's coming home.  Not that I think he should stay away really, but I don't much like the way the press is treating the guy in Dallas.   Got to thinking about that guy in Dallas.  He probably lied so that he could get to decent healthcare, and apparently his family lives here.  He was probably afraid to admit he had contact with Ebola patient in Liberia for fear they would keep him there.  He literally may have lied ...

Diagnosed With Chronic Lyme DiseaseJan 05, 2011
Hi all, I am asking for prayers from my fellow MTs out there.  I was diagnosed with Lyme disease over a year ago still undergoing treatment.  It has been a long road to recovery, but my finances are in shambles right now.  I lost my job typing because of my inability to concentrate and incorrect work constantly.  I went from $700.00 weekly down to $400.00 and still could not do that level of work.  Now I cannot apply for unemployment as I was an IC.  My husban ...

Newly Diagnosed With Diabetes And Question AboutFeb 11, 2015
Spoke to the doctor's PA yesterday.  Had to stop taking metformin as it made my ankles and feet swell.  So they have given me glipizide.  He told me to make sure I eat 30 minutes after taking the medication.  Two questions: 1.  Does it have to be 30 minutes or can I eat sooner if I want.  I'm not a breakfast person and a lot of times I forget to eat, so was wondering if I can take the medication then fix myself something and eat it then or do I have to wa ...

Diagnosed With Macular Degeneration, Trying To Gather Some Information On OthersOct 20, 2009
I was diagnosed with dry macular degeneration yesterday. I know what this entails. My father was diagnosed in his 80s although might have had it prior to that time. He had the wet type. I think it usually starts with the dry and then can go into the wet. He wound up being legally blind in 1 eye and possibly had some issues with the other one.  I am going to do everything possible to strive towards paying off any big outstanding bills over this upcoming year. I have 2 charge accts and want t ...

Friend Diagnosed With Stage 1B Esophageal CancerMay 19, 2010
Hi all, I have a guy friend who is only 42 years old that was diagnosed with stage 1B esophageal cancer. They were able to remove the tumor and he is now going through radiation treatments 3 days a week for 4 weeks. I would like to make up a care package to give to him, but unsure what I should put in it. I was thinking some inspirational reading material and he is a huge Led Zeppelin fan. I have also heard Ensure or Boost is something good to be taking as a supplement and have thought of some ...

Second Nurse Diagnosed With Ebola Was On Jet Night Before Diagnosis.Oct 15, 2014
It was stated earlier that anyone who came in contact with Mr. Duncan was being monitored. How is being able to fly commercially considered monitoring? Also, an infectious disease expert from Purdue says Ebola has the potential to become airborne, but it has not been well studied. There are too many unknowns out there. Let's ban commercial travel from West Africa. Call or email your elected officials. ...

When he started in with the bellering that they do, everyone else in the room was trying to keep straight faces. We just sat there and, as he went on and on and on, we just looked at each other. Then of course we all avoided him, but we didn't 'engage' him in conversation.  After his tirade, he just sat there with a mad look on his face until it was time to leave. It's great to have this as a place where we don't have to keep a straight face. Love it! ...
