Newly diagnosed with diabetes and question about

Posted: Feb 11, 2015

Spoke to the doctor's PA yesterday.  Had to stop taking metformin as it made my ankles and feet swell.  So they have given me glipizide.  He told me to make sure I eat 30 minutes after taking the medication.  Two questions:

1.  Does it have to be 30 minutes or can I eat sooner if I want.  I'm not a breakfast person and a lot of times I forget to eat, so was wondering if I can take the medication then fix myself something and eat it then or do I have to wait 30 minutes.

2.  When they say take it with food, how much food?  Will a piece of toast or an apple be enough or do I need to have a full breakfast (whatever that might be).

Kind of stupid questions but this is all new to me.  I've never taken any prescription medications ever and I've never been a breakfast person ever since I was in grammar school.  Sometimes I have some oatmeal, but not until late morning.  Now I'm going to have to start making breakfasts and honestly the only thing I can think of to have is oatmeal or toast.

Thanks for any help.

Call a pharmacist. - I do that all the time.

They know best.

P.S. Glipizide can also cause ankle sweling.

I was told I got diabetes from not eating regularly. - sm

Or that it was helped along by not eating breakfast and waiting to eat until later in the day, causing drastic swings in high and low blood sugar.

I agree with calling a pharmacist, but if your PA told you to take it 30 minutes before eating, that is what you should do. They know what they're talking about. Glipizide is a timed-release pill that will work throughout the day. You don't want to take it too late and have it cause a hypoglycemic reaction when it's time for you to go to bed.

I was on glyburide, which is the same class of drugs as glipizide (sm) - anon

Nobody told me to take it 30 mins before a meal. I always took it with my meal. Didn't seem to have a problem with it. It worked just the way it was suppposd to. I am not off all diabetic meds and just diet controlled.

Breakfast suggestions - sm

You don't have to eat "breakfast food" just because it is breakfast. Leftovers from dinner are fine. What you would eat for lunch is fine. What you would eat anytime is fine.

Meat, cheese, eggs, vegetables, fruit, kale, spring mix, etc.

I would suggest that you avoid bread and wheat-gluten, as it has been shown to be associated with the development of type 2 diabetes. Eliminating it can return some people to normal.

Question About Diabetes Oct 19, 2014
If someone is wondering if they may have diabetes will an Accu-Chek machine tell that.  In other words, if an Accu-Check tells them what their blood sugar is would that be the same thing as getting a blood test to find out if they do or do not have diabetes. ...

Type2 Diabetes QuestionJun 13, 2010
My sister was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and asked me if I could help with meals/menu ideas, etc.  She stopped sodas, milk products, is drinking more water, and has already lost 8 pounds in an effort to get her weight down (she's current at 220), but asked if I could find some info for her on nutrition.  She went to the website for diabetes (ADA?) but was very confused and overwhelmed.  Does anyone have any suggestions or know of websites that are easy to understand. ...

Why Newly Leaked DNC Emails Should Terrify Christians.Aug 07, 2016
continue to come to light as hacked emails continue to be published online, exposing the radical left for who they really are for the whole world to see. One of the latest developments to surface are emails that show the Democratic Party was working with anti-religious freedom groups to get around religious liberty laws that protect our First Amendment right to believe what we want, worship where we want, and live out our beliefs both publicly and privately. This is truly atrocious. A ...

Washington (CNN) — Newly released emails from Hillary Clinton's tenure as secretary of state raise questions about the nature of the department's relationship with the Clinton Foundation. Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group, released 296 pages of emails from the Democratic presidential nominee, including 44 that Judicial Watch says were not previously handed over to the State Department by Clinton. The emails, many of which are heavily redacted, raise questions about t ...

Diagnosed With Paget's Of BreastJan 03, 2011
This has took me a while to come to terms with it, but I was diagnosed December 3 with Paget's of the right breast. This was misdiagnosed a year ago as eczema. I have to wait and have my 2nd MRI (as I freaked out with the 1st one) on the 31st of this month with a sedative this time, and an ultrasound to find out how far it has progressed. The mammogram is completely clear though and they did not find any lumps. Much prayers are appreciated as I have a 12 and 6 year old and husband at home. ...

Diabetes And InsulinAug 05, 2012
I've had type 2 diabetes for around 20 years and have been moderately controlled on pills - eventually reaching the maximum daily doses of metformin and glyburide. Over the past few months, the numbers have been creeping up, and my doctor wanted to add a third drug. I've opted to start on long-acting insulin (Levemir), since I think insulin is actually healthier for the body than the pills. On the day I started the insulin, a week-and-a-half ago, my glucose was only 103 (very unus ...

Hi all, I am asking for prayers from my fellow MTs out there.  I was diagnosed with Lyme disease over a year ago still undergoing treatment.  It has been a long road to recovery, but my finances are in shambles right now.  I lost my job typing because of my inability to concentrate and incorrect work constantly.  I went from $700.00 weekly down to $400.00 and still could not do that level of work.  Now I cannot apply for unemployment as I was an IC.  My husban ...

Diagnosed With Macular Degeneration, Trying To Gather Some Information On OthersOct 20, 2009
I was diagnosed with dry macular degeneration yesterday. I know what this entails. My father was diagnosed in his 80s although might have had it prior to that time. He had the wet type. I think it usually starts with the dry and then can go into the wet. He wound up being legally blind in 1 eye and possibly had some issues with the other one.  I am going to do everything possible to strive towards paying off any big outstanding bills over this upcoming year. I have 2 charge accts and want t ...

Hi all, I have a guy friend who is only 42 years old that was diagnosed with stage 1B esophageal cancer. They were able to remove the tumor and he is now going through radiation treatments 3 days a week for 4 weeks. I would like to make up a care package to give to him, but unsure what I should put in it. I was thinking some inspirational reading material and he is a huge Led Zeppelin fan. I have also heard Ensure or Boost is something good to be taking as a supplement and have thought of some ...

Sorry To Bug You All Again, But I Have Another Pie QuestionDec 03, 2011
I am making a blueberry pie to take to my stepfather tomorrow, and I thought it would like nice to use a cookie cutter in the shape of a bell and apply that piece of crust to the top of the pie.   If I use a little bit of water to attach it, will it bake to the top crust securely?  A lot of you sound like you are pretty handy in the kitchen!   The lemon sponge pie I made for Thanksgiving was wonderful.  Thanks to the person who suggested the allrecipes.com webs ...

Question ..Feb 10, 2010
I'm always facinated at some people who think all social problems and situations are so black and white.Abortion is here to stay, whether it's legal or not, just like it's always been an option when a woman finds herself facing the impossible situation of an unwanted pregnancy. Wishing it wasn't an option has never worked. However, when a discussion comes up about abortion, we women are strictly divided. Black and White in our opinions. This is a complicated issue. It doesn ...

Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
