Diagnosed with macular degeneration, trying to gather some information on others

Posted: Oct 20, 2009

I was diagnosed with dry macular degeneration yesterday. I know what this entails. My father was diagnosed in his 80s although might have had it prior to that time. He had the wet type. I think it usually starts with the dry and then can go into the wet. He wound up being legally blind in 1 eye and possibly had some issues with the other one.  I am going to do everything possible to strive towards paying off any big outstanding bills over this upcoming year. I have 2 charge accts and want to get those paid off. I am receiving social security now and another retirement check so if I pay those off, should be ok as far as finances. I am getting on some good eye vitamins the ophthalmologist recommended, plus vitamin C and E along with eating more of the green leafy vegetables, always wear sun glasses and don’t smoke at all. Found an extremely good antioxidant I have ordered on the internet (hubby is into supplements so he already knew of it). My question to people here is do you know anyone who has this, how long have they had it, have they been able to keep their eyesight or what is their story? I know of no one else in my family besides my father who had this and he died about 4 year ago. Thanks.

I have SAD and discovered the use of blue spectrum blocking glasses, light bulbs, and screen blockers to help with resetting melatonin production...not your problem, but on researching I read a lot about the dangers of blue light spectrum and macular degeneration. Hope you take the time to Google for this information and I hope it helps.

The site I used is lowbluelights.com and their glasses are especially designed to block blue light.

Try this site as well.

Hi Lynne. My grandmother was diagnosed with macular degeneration a few years ago at the age of 70. She began taking an eye vitamin faithfully containing lutein and eating so many greens. Ive never seen someone eat so much brocolli and spinach and kale. Before we knew it, her macular degeneration had entirely reversed itself and she had no need of surgery. Keep up with the natural stuff. I hope it works for you too!

For almost 11 years I have been experiencing random symptoms, stroke-like symptoms at times with paralysis in my face, tingling, numbness, weakness in my left arm, as well as pain in my joints, especially my feet, knees, hands and hips.  On top of this there are days when I ache, hurt and just feel so bad in general that I do not want to climb out of bed.  Two weeks ago I experienced another stroke-like event, ended up seeing a neurologist who ordered MRI (negative for stroke thankfull ...

Son Diagnosed With SchizophreniaJun 27, 2012
Please pray for my son and myself and our entire family.  He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and has been having a very rough time of things.  He was hospitalized 11/11/2011 and has been put on medication that works for him, and although he is better, we have very little support for mental health patients in my state, especially young patients) his age is 19).  I have done everything I can for him, and have gone to the mental health clinic and psychiatrists in our area.  ...

Diagnosed With Paget's Of BreastJan 03, 2011
This has took me a while to come to terms with it, but I was diagnosed December 3 with Paget's of the right breast. This was misdiagnosed a year ago as eczema. I have to wait and have my 2nd MRI (as I freaked out with the 1st one) on the 31st of this month with a sedative this time, and an ultrasound to find out how far it has progressed. The mammogram is completely clear though and they did not find any lumps. Much prayers are appreciated as I have a 12 and 6 year old and husband at home. ...

Diagnosed With Chronic Lyme DiseaseJan 05, 2011
Hi all, I am asking for prayers from my fellow MTs out there.  I was diagnosed with Lyme disease over a year ago still undergoing treatment.  It has been a long road to recovery, but my finances are in shambles right now.  I lost my job typing because of my inability to concentrate and incorrect work constantly.  I went from $700.00 weekly down to $400.00 and still could not do that level of work.  Now I cannot apply for unemployment as I was an IC.  My husban ...

The email began as a request for an essay by Clinton from Marie Claire who was partnering with Harvard University on a study about women and guns but it quickly devolved into brainstorming ideas on how to push the campaign’s anti-gun and racial narratives. The team began discussing an article published in “The Guardian&r ...

Some Questions About HPV. Any InformationDec 01, 2015
I am writing this with the full knowledge of my dear friend who just discovered about a month ago she has HPV. I told her I would ask other MTs who might have a little information about this. She is a person who is very involved in her church yet I doubt she has been able to talk with someone there, very embarrassed about her s ...

Need Military Burial InformationDec 02, 2009
My husband's father was in the military and served in VietNam 3 times.  He just passed right after divorcing his wife.  His wife now says that in between hospitalizations she took him to the JP and they re-married and he changed his will (8 days after he made the will after the divorce).  Now that is enough to grasp but here is the clincher.  She is telling the family that the military won't bury him for 8 days (because they are so busy) and after the 1 hour viewing ...

Eye-opening Information On Hospital Costs.Jul 05, 2012
I watched Dr. Sanjay Gupta's piece on CNN this week where he was explaining why hospital costs were so high.  Of all the bills collected by the hospital from all sources they only end up actually collecting 4%, that's 4 cents for every dollar billed!  To compensate, they bill accordingly so they come out even or ahead, $800 for a disposable chest tube that in reality costs less than $50 from the supplier.  This was really shocking to me!  To be fair, labor need ...
