Evaporated milk question

Posted: Jan 27, 2011

I bought a few cans on sale for baking and when I opened a can (after shaking well), it was pretty thin and the color was a beige or a little lighter than a cardboard box. I don't remember it being that dark or so thin.

I didn't use it but I'm just wondering if it would have been okay to use. It had no odor but I didn't trust to even taste it. Would it have been okay? I still have 3 cans left.

Thanks.

milk - shoo-shoo

It's normally a beige color. As long as it wasn't thickened and it didn't smell funky, it's good to use.

It's often pretty dark - Old part-timer

The last can I used was fairly brownish but seemed OK and the recipe turned out fine. It always seems to be thicker than regular milk, though.

Milk is... - NM

[ In Reply To ..]
good for you if it comes from your mother's breasts and you are an infant. Otherwise, milk from an animal is only good for the young of that specific animal. Milk from any source (other than your mother's breasts)--can, plastic jug, box, dry, butter, cheese, buttermilk, cottage cheese, yogurt--low fat, regular, high fat, cream all are damaging to your health. All animals wean their young at certain points and never suffer the diseases we as humans get. Only our pets, which we also feed milk, also get cancer and diabetes. But, go ahead and use the milk. It probably won't hurt. ; )

I dissected a frog whose body was riddled with cancer. I guess he must have been drinking milk?

I guess... - NM

[ In Reply To ..]
anyone can say anything is cancer if they want to but maybe if the frog had been allowed to live free in the pond, he would still be alive today. ; )

The casein in milk has been researched and found to cause cancer cells to grow. Maybe someone should stop feeding the frogs milk. They deserve to live free of cancer while they are still able. LOL You can have my share of moo juice.
And horses get malignant sarcoids... - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
must be all that milk people feed them. I guess that it's easy to say that anything that goes undiagnosed (i.e., wild animal's cancer) must be something different, if that fits your theory, but what about cancer in horses and other livestock animals who are not fed dairy products (mostly because they are expensive? I don't drink milk because I don't like it, but I think that if it were that easy to prevent cancer (not drinking milk), we would have stopped drinking a long time ago. Must be the evil dairy counsel at work.
Any animal... - NM
[ In Reply To ..]
in contact with humans is going to be subjected to disease because of all the ingredients that are used in animal feed such as other dead animals, milk products etc. Humans are not above making a buck even at the expense of an animal's health. In case you didn't realize, diseases such as cancer and diabetes are money makers. A "cure" would be devastating to those who make money off these diseases. It's not as "easy" as you try to make it sound. People have been told for over a century that milk is good for them. It's very difficult to prove a myth wrong that has been in existence for many years. People just refuse to listen, even when it's the truth and doctors are the worst. I don't drink milk because I was weaned from my mother's breast many years ago and, since I'm not a calf or a kid goat, common sense tells me I don't need the milk from a cow or goat whether I happen to like it or not. The dairy counsel wants to make money. They are not concerned about anyone's health.
It could be argued that EVERY animal... - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
indirectly or directly comes into contact with humans, thus justifying your theory that humans cause all cancer. I think that the theory is silly, though. A positive correlation does not automatically imply causation. With your argument, humans cause everything. Earthquakes happen on the earth, which is in contact with humans, thus humans cause earthquakes, or maybe bacteria do...that theory works, too. Find me some causation data for your milk or your cancer theory and I am all for giving it a read, as silly as it might be.
This milk theory is backed up... - NM
[ In Reply To ..]
by years of research but is largely ignored. I am not saying that ALL animals who come into contact with humans get cancer. I am saying they are at greater risk because humans create products that do cause disease, i.e. cigarettes, etc. Your theory (earthquakes, etc.) seems a tad radical in comparison to mine. You have access to the Internet and can find these theories/facts on your own. There are plenty of books written on the research which I won't name because then there would be more arguments as to the credibility of the authors. If a person wants to believe, they will. If they don't, they'll continue on their merry way. Cigarettes have been proven to cause lung cancer (how silly that must seem to addicted smokers) and they're still sold by the millions every day and back in the 50s many doctors claimed they were good for us. Isn't it funny how "theories" so often turn out to be fact??
I never implied that you said... - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
that ALL animals who come into contact with humans get cancer, just that all animals who get cancer do have some form of contact with humans--big difference, and it's true, all animals that have cancer come into contact, directly or indirectly, with humans. My point was that this does not mean that humans cause all cancer. I do not think that the earthquake theory is any more radical than the theory that humans cause all cancer--they are equally ridiculous. That was my point. As far as credibility of your authors, I cannot even comment on that, as I don't know who they are, but if you think that their credibility is questionable, I imagine that you are correct.
I disagree... - NM
[ In Reply To ..]
I believe that animals that get cancer do so from some form of contact by humans. I did not say that I think the authors are not credible because I happen to believe they are. I just happen to know that those people who disagree with me about these doctor's and researcher's findings DO not find them to be credible simply because they don't believe the findings in the first place and I think it's safe to assume you would be no different. If you have a true desire to check out the research, I'm sure you are capable. You would not be correct in your assumption that I question the research simply because I choose to let you inquire on your own. Now, that I find ridiculous. ; )

[ In Reply To ..]
28-year-old horse would neither have lived this long if left to her own devices. I know that people are evil and cause all disease, but think how many diseases vaccinations prevent. Oh, and there are several studies that say that sarcoids in horses are probably caused by a virus--why some become malignant and others don't is unknown. Must be milk.
Or whatever is in your horse's feed... - NM
[ In Reply To ..]
which could be milk because they add it to everything and, like I said, milk doesn't cause cancer but it can make it spread and grow. Our son's lab developed a huge mass in her abdomen and they fed her lots of milk along with other junk. Animals don't live as long as humans and, therefore, when they do get cancer they're already in the later years of their lives. We live longer and cancer can strike us at earlier ages. You scoff at the milk theory but they scoffed about cigarettes too. ; )
Probably what is in her feed is what is keeping... - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
her aged behind alive (that and not having to forage for her own food, as well as being kept safe from predators). By the way, my horse does not have sarcoids. The reason that I thought you inferred that milk causes cancer is because you did. "Only our pets, which we also feed milk, also get cancer and diabetes." You also said that it causes diabetes. Way to backtrack, though. :)
I did not infer and never have.. - NM
[ In Reply To ..]
that milk CAUSES cancer, only that it makes it spread and grow because cancer is simply mutated cells. If milk caused cancer, any species that nurses their young would be at risk and that's just silly. Our pets, as opposed to wild animals, eat the same things we do. That should be a clue right there. Backtrack...not hardly. ; )

As an after thought... - NM

[ In Reply To ..]
There is concern that lots of animals/reptiles get disease because of dangerous chemicals that runoff into ponds, lakes and rivers. Lots of things can cause cancer and milk is NOT one of them but it does cause existing cancer cells to grow because that's what milk from any species does. It makes the young of each species grow. That's why, as adults we should no longer use it, even from our own mothers because it makes cells grow. It just makes sense. Any one who can't see it is blind, regardless of their college degrees. ; )

Here we go again. - Oh no milk!

[ In Reply To ..]
Every time someone mentions milk on this board, we get this rant about how bad dairy is for us. The anti-dairy ministry is back in town again.

Well, I just give up. Meat is bad for us, too much fish will give us mercury poisoning, non-organic chemical sprayed veggies give us cancer, sugar rots the pancreas. I guess I'll have to accept it all, graze on organically grown grass and STARVE TO DEATH.

Or just try eating... - NM

[ In Reply To ..]
what's good for us in the first place. Works every time. ; )
I actually do. - Oh no milk!
[ In Reply To ..]
You really have no idea who I am or what I do. But, from what you post here, it seems to me that you have a special need to preach.

I am actually quite interested in my nutrition. I maintain a large organic garden in my backyard, and I am always looking for ways to live sustainably. For that reason, I eat very, very little meat. I also don't eat much dairy at all. But I also don't shove these things down people's throats. Most people get very defensive about something as personal as the food they eat. Food is more than fuel. It's culture, and so therefore, very personal. It's very insulting to have someone tell you that the way you eat is wrong. Here I am, probably more in line with your thinking than you know, and I'm insulted! Could just be me, but I see a lot of responses here that aren't exactly patting you on the back.

Open your mind a little bit, take the feedback seriously, and instead of pushing back, try finding another way to get your message across. And then accept that everyone has a choice to run with the info or not. The OP made posted a simple question that had nothing to do with whether or not dairy products are part of a healthy diet. I can't speak for her, but I know were it me, I would have thrown up a wall and not given any credence to your opinion.
I'm not preaching... - NM
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't care what you all eat or drink. It's a preference. I just stated some facts that have been researched and proven. That's all. You can take it or leave it or you can argue with the researchers and there's plenty of them out there who believe milk is the cause of lots of health problems. I could care less if any one else believes the research but I happen to believe it. That's my opinion and I have a right to one, just like the rest of you. ; )

A slow death - Milk drinker

[ In Reply To ..]
Well stated! I get fed up with hearing every thing we deat or drink can potentially kill us. I am pushing 63 years of age and probably drank more milk my entire life than just about anyone. I drink fat-free milk now for about 25 years now. It is just about my favorite "food", and if it was gonna kill me I would have been dead a very long time ago.

Sorry, but if we humans gave up everything that is not good for us, - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
we wouldn't exist. I asked a simple question about evaporated milk and I didn't want a lecture on cancer.

Baloney is what I say. Sorry, but I don't believe half the research studies anymore...especially when one month something is bad for you and then a couple months later, it's either good for you or the last study was flawed.

They can take their studies and do you-know-what with them.

Some studies make a lot of sense.. - NM

[ In Reply To ..]
others don't. It makes sense that we shouldn't be using milk at all, let alone milk designed for another species. Studies be darned...it's just common sense but, by all means, drink and use all you want. In fact, have my share. ; )
I will gladly have your share. - Backwards Typist
[ In Reply To ..]
You asked about some common ailments to another poster and I'll answer that one for you, too.

I am 63 (egads!) and I have NONE, NADA, NYET of those ailments. Most years, I don't even get a cold. The only time I get the flu is when I get a flu shot. I weight the same for the past 35 years without the need for a diet.

As I said before, if we listened to every science/research study, we would fail to exist. Which food or liquid are they going to change the recommendations for next?

As for me, I'll go on doing, eating, and drinking whatever I like in moderation, of course, just like I always did.
Your choice...it comes with too many risks for me... : ) - NM

[ In Reply To ..]
I am as tired as you are of the studies, which will no doubt turn around given time. What is our goal; to live to be 200 years old? The simple fact is we are all going to die of something sooner or later, even the "expert" who lectures everyone. I wonder where you get a pill for a pain in the butt . . .
The goal... - NM
[ In Reply To ..]
is not to live to be 100 and, yes, we will all die sooner or later. My goal is to die later and with less moans and groans. No one wants to give up anything that they love but yet they still want to live without aches and pains, i.e. disease/disorders. And your post just proves my point. You want another "pill" for a pain in the butt. Pills don't solve or cure anything, especially when you're still ingesting your favorite "poison." I get tired of the whiners who constantly have some ill but aren't willing to do anything about it except take another stupid pill at a larger dose. Now these people are the "pains in the butt" but they do keep my paycheck coming in. ; )

Wow..just weird and stupid......sm - TK

I don't really mean to be mean but your response was a "laugh to me." I do not like milk but of course use it in cooking. Cannot imagine that if only breast milk is good for you......... where in the heck am I going to find a donor for cooking! Realistically, we have all been drinking milk for some time and we are obviously not dead. Go gripe about Mad Cow disease again.

Because evaporated milk is . . . well, evaporated, there is less water in it. That causes the color to be a more beige. It isn't as thick as condensed milk, which is VERY thick. But, it's really pretty much the consistency of regular milk. It sounds as if your can of evaporated milk was exactly what it was supposed to be.
