Raw Milk

Posted: Apr 28, 2010

Do you drink it? Would you if it were offered to you?

Do you think people should have the right to buy it if they so desire? How about if there were warning labels on the bottle?

I think I'll take mine pasteurized, please. But .... There's a RAW milk black market around here. Yes, it should be legal to sell/buy. It has lots of health benefits as per article in NY Mag this week - raw milk seems to be quite trendy at the moment!

Raw, pasteurized, low-fat, high-fat, skim, powdered, chocolate or buttermilk....ice cream, cheese, cottage cheese, or yogurt. I was weaned from my mother years ago and, if I were going to drink milk, it would be from her, not a cow.

To answer your question....You have the right to buy lots of things that aren't good for you, milk included...cigarettes, liquor, candy, hot dogs, etc. Yes, all milk should have a warning label. It is linked to heart disease, diabetes, leukemia, acne, IBS, MS and a multitude of other diseases. It is only good for calves and then not even them once they can eat grass.

Heck yeah--I've had it, bought it, had raw goats milk too. If I could score it for free, I'd be all over that, as it is nearly double the price of the stuff at the grocery store, but farmers gotta make a living too! We are losing more and more farms every day...especially the "little guys."

I actually am one of those "freaks" who believes raw is better, as who knows what is being pumped into commercial dairy cows and the milk once it's in the hands of the processing plants.

A good farmer stands behind the product they sell. They don't want to ruin their livelihood by getting people sick. They take care of their animals and the land, and in turn the animals and the land takes care of them.

As with anything else in this world, it's best to know your source and ask questions. Here in Maine, farmers can't just label themselves as "organic" and call it good. They have to be certified and jump all the hoops--and to do that is expensive but it holds them accountable. Perhaps your state has something similar? See link below for MOFGA helpful info.
:-)

Ditto what Hayseed said. nm - From a reputable source, yes!

Evaporated Milk QuestionJan 27, 2011
I bought a few cans on sale for baking and when I opened a can (after shaking well), it was pretty thin and the color was a beige or a little lighter than a cardboard box. I don't remember it being that dark or so thin. I didn't use it but I'm just wondering if it would have been okay to use. It had no odor but I didn't trust to even taste it. Would it have been okay? I still have 3 cans left. Thanks. ...
