Question for those on FB. What in the WORLD

Posted: Feb 19, 2012

are people thinking?  What is the deal with some people getting their posts always liked and commented on and others completely ignored?  If I was not hooked on Castleville, I would completely give it up!!

Isn't that the point? - Avoid

The whole ostensible purpose of FaceSpook is for inane exchanges -- the milieu is similar to high school, where you had the popular people in their little "cliques" and so forth. (Your complaint about not getting "likes" suggests that you are unhappy with this aspect.)

The REAL purpose of FaceSpook is to collect data on people, which is why there are privacy issues (that SOME of us were screaming about, only to be called "paranoid," long before this came out in mainstream media reports). There's no need to data mine when morons VOLUNTEER the information.

Why ANYONE with at least 2 working brain cells would go there is mystifying. I guess it answers your question ("What in the world are people thinking?"), though -- fact is, they are NOT thinking!

Despite your diatribe and condescension towards those - of us who use FB, it can be a fun tool

You just have to be aware of the security issues. I have NO personal info in my profile other than the city in which I live. I don't post pictures of my family or myself. That said, FB can be a wonderful tool to keep in touch with friends, relatives, former co-workers, etc, that otherwise would be out of touch.

I have been able to reconnect with former coworkers that I had great fondness for, I keep in touch with cousins across the country easily this way. It's a great tool as long as you know what the issues are and manage those issues.

Please go away.

I disagree. For my friends and me, FB is like a - faster and more -(sm)- Meerkat

interesting way to keep in touch rather than simply by email. I like being able to see at a glance what's going on in my circle of friends. Latest baby picture or funny cat video. Latest health update by someone who's been ill or injured. When and where the next get-together is going to be. Or discussions about life.

So I guess Facebook is only as useful, interesting, or intelligent as what people choose to post on it.

Granted, there are some things I don't like about it, but the alternative of not having it at all isn't something I'd like to face at this point!

Try to post things that are relevant to what others - are discussing. Since there is no -

"dislike" button to push, like there is here at MTStars, if a post I made gets no replies, and especially if others discussed the same thing and their posts were "liked", I assume they didn't like what I had to say. Depending upon what we're taking about, and with whom, sometimes I just delete the post. Especially if I felt maybe I wrote it without thinking first.

Also, if you play Farmville or Castleville or whatever, FB seems to send every detail of every move you make on those games to ALL OF US, even if we don't play. That gets annoying. Since I don't want my FB page filled with posts about who sold a virtual pig to whom, I block those games from my FB page.

Unfortunately, I think sometimes blocking the FB games from my page also limits the number of regular, relevant posts from that person that make it to my FB page, even when I visit their page and see that indeed, they are making posts.

So, maybe that's what's happening to you. People might be blocking the FB games you play, and unwittingly limiting a certain number of your regular posts from their pages.

Just a hunch, but a strong one!

I also love it but am very cautious about - security.

I rarely post personal pictures, but I also only allow friends to view my stuff. By friends, I mean I only allow ppl I know personally with the exception of 2 coworkers I've never met. I had two of my BFFs from HS I hadn't seen in 20-plus years catching up in my living room Fri thanks to FB. I also block all of the games and have been blocked by ppl who play because I won't send them a bale of hay, or whatever it is. Goes both ways.

What In The World Am I Going To Say To My MIL!Jan 20, 2010
Will try to make a long story short.  I love my MIL.  We get along great.  She comes to visit every couple of months and stays for the weekend.  She has had some serious drug/alcohol problems in the past (in remission for 3-4 years), but 2 years ago had an actual suicide plan.  She has had several psych admissions, is heavily medicated at times, but seems fine lately, and is under psych care.  Occasionally she has said about my 3-year-old, "When he is older and ...

The marquee at our local McDonald's said they were interviewing on Tuesdays from 2 to 4.  My 18 year old has been doing landscape work at our church for a couple of years but now needs something with more hours so he went at 2:30.  He was told the manager was not in and to come back in an hour.  Obviously, DH and I were not impressed with this level of professionalism but oh well.  He goes in, is interviewed and is told to report for orientation at 2:45.  The paperw ...

Why In The World Is It People Always Want To Dec 16, 2015
I realize that's a question with a wide range of answers possible. This town seems to have a lot of ghetto-y, trashy type people who always want to settle any type of dispute, no matter how minor,  by fighting.   Offering someone to  "square up" and beat the crap out of them. That's really going to prove or accomplish something?   Seems to me all it proves or accomplishes is that people are too ignorant or lazy to discuss facts in a reasonable manner, mu ...

The World Can Officially End, Because Now I've Heard Everything. Apr 29, 2011
The worst, bar-none absolute WORST dictator on my primary account, was rattling along in his usual fashion, speaking into his armpit, when an overhead page interrupted. And do you know what he did? He actually . . . wait for it . . . he actually STOPPED TALKING until the overhead page was done. And that wasn't all. After that, he said, "Sorry about that overhead page," stuffed his head back into his armpit, and went on with the dictation. Perhaps the world did end and I didn't noti ...

If I could buy a cabin in the Rocky Mountains on 40 acres of land, I would.  Except I can't. Obama Better For World Economy: Oct 10, 2012
(Reuters) - Twice as many business executives around the world say the global economy will prosper better if incumbent President Barack Obama wins the next election than if his Republican challenger Mitt Romney does, a poll showed.   Democrat Obama was chosen by 42.7 percent in the 1,700 respondent poll, compared with 20.5 percent for Romney. The rest said "neither". The result was different among respondents in the United States, where a slim majority thought Romney would be better for ...
