Question for those who are cheering on

Posted: Feb 21, 2012

Do you get your pets spayed/neutered, or is that against doctrine, too?  Yes, a bit of a stretch, but post pet owners consider a pet part of the family, so should we let pets breed, well (sorry) but, like rabbits?

Also, where do you draw the line in separation of church and state?  Yes, I fully understand the 1st Amendmant, but it is intended to cover individuals from persecution based on their religious belief, not corporations funded w/ taxpayer dollars, and face it, if a hospital or school is owned by the church, they are getting taxpayer $ from all of us, like it or not.  What if JoeBlow started a church based on Native American teachings that believe that smoking marijuana, etc., is a religious experience?  Are you going to support that church's doctrines?

Bottom line, IMHO, is that none of has a say in where our tax $ go.  Yes, we can vote, and I'm pretty sure that most of us this passionate do, but after the politicians get into office, well...

you make some interesting points, particularly the fact that church-owned organizations receive taxpayer dollars already.

I have often wondered where religious opinions run with respect to frozen embryos.

Ditto, and I like your post, too. - sm

I believe Mr. Santorum's religion is against stem cell research, as well.

A lot of them believe that embryos are the same - as a full formed human.

[ In Reply To ..]
but yet would vote against funding for clothing, feeding, housing educating humans who are already born i.e. welfare. Also a lot of them would protect an embryo, but have no problems with enforcing the death penalty, state-sponsored executions. Go figure.

What makes you think Catholic schools receive taxpayer funds? They DO NOT receive any taxpayer funding. I pay for my child to attend a parochial school. I am not using any taxpayer money. And, I do not get any tax break for doing so.

Also, please support your argument that the Catholic Church receives taxpayer money. It is exempt from taxes, as are other churches. What taxpayer money is the Church receiving?

As for pets being spayed and neutered, this is really not worth responding to.

There is natural family planning which is supported by the Catholic Church. It is based on self control. If you are unfamiliar with that concept then you should by all means avail yourself of whatever method your need to prevent your pregnancy. Just don't expect to receive your birth control from a Catholic healthcare facility.

You seem to not have much of a grasp on this issue.

Taxpayers do fund Catholic schools and HCF - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The following are the first financial sources listed on our local Catholic college's web site:

Federal Pell Grant:
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG):
Post-Secondary Child Care Grant:
State Grant:

The local Catholic hospitals take Medicare, MA, VA, and any other grant money they can.

That wonderful self-control method has about a success rate of 0.1%, but I am sure you have the most current stat.

Thank you, "do fund" - Cavewoman

Why churches should not be tax exempt. sm - oldMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Churches and religious organizations should not be tax exempt unless they can show that their income is used for charitable causes. Also or the reason that their tax exempt status costs you and me billions. We are not talking chump change here. Consider that for every tax dollar a religious organization does not pay, you and I pay it on its behalf. Many are among the wealthiest organizations in the world.

The founders got it right. These thoughtful men were conscentious students of history, many of them witnessing firsthand the bloody devastation wrought wherever religion entangled itself with government on foreign shores - and our own. The founders saw that without a strict separation between religion and government, the same tragedy would inevitably be replayed here.

Too bad same outrage was not displayed - with MM tax exempt status SM

what does everyone think of Mormons posthumously baptizing holocaust victims among others. I imagine they have a few deceased popes on their rolls as well. Can you imagine, a pope having to give up all that silk, satin and jewels for a white shirt, black tie and black pants? Oh the humanity!
This is supposed to be civilized? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Sounds like posters only want the tax exempt status to go to the entities that carry on their work or attack any faith they are not in agreement with. All other churches/charities be damned! Pretty biased and discriminating; guess using that guideline in insulting other faiths is okay. Just not what YOU believe. If so, sorry example of civilized.

"Can you imagine, a pope having to give up all that silk, satin and jewels for a white shirt, black tie and black pants? Oh the humanity!"

it is possible to be tax exempt and still receive - taxpayer money

[ In Reply To ..]
Many charitable organizations are tax exempt but are free to receive federal funding. The two are not mutually exclusive.

These types of hospitals have been around - for many years, and this

[ In Reply To ..]
is the first time I have really seen any complaint on this. I've never seen people in an uproar about the fact that things such as tubals and vasectomies are not performed at a lot of these places, and if you have many of these faith-based hospitals around, a lot of them are huge facilities. It's not like this is something new here.

I'm not Catholic, but no, I have not had my dog spayed. I'm pretty sure even though I'm not Catholic that they don't believe their dogs or any other pet for that matter are subject to the same religious guidelines as they are.

Congrats on a truly - outstanding assinine post sm

Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
