Affirmations are like yoga for your brain

Posted: Jan 20, 2014

I'm feeling particularly stressed - sending out things to lit journals, with the ever-present possibility (about 95% on a good day) of being rejected.

And it's like, you can sit and stew, or you can do your affirmations - it's very hard to call them to mind when you're stressed out - it's like I have to have them printed in front of me to be able to do them when I'm stressed out.

  • I am worry free.

  • I release all fears of not being perfect. I am good enough. I am perfect in my own way.

  • I let go of all expectations. I am free to live the life I've dreamed.

Those are some good ones.

Better than affirmations - sm

Instead of making a career of sending things off to uber-snooty literary journals and feeling badly about rejection, why not just take matters into your own hands and publish them yourself on Amazon?

You can publish electronically for Kindle, and for other e-formats, without needing a publisher to do it for you. Long, short, fiction, non -- it doesn't much matter. It isn't all that difficult, either.

Unless rejection and struggle are your life theme -- first in MT and now in literature -- I think you should hie yourself over to Amazon and have a go at some success.

Could be that you've had your heart set on wasting away in a romantically pathetic writer's garrett, subsisting on bad wine and the occasional bowl of weak gruel, your only heat from burning rejection notices in an ashtray, but it's a little passe. Lots of e-writers have turned those garretts into comfy, electrically heated nests with well-stocked pantries thanks to the Kindle.

Let us know when you get something up there. We can review it for you.

GOOD GRIEF - you assume A LOT - wheres_my_job

I have my heart set on many things, but the picture you paint is not one of them. LOL.

I would also point out PLENTY of people self-publish and they don't get anywhere either.

I do get acceptances from lit journals. Getting published in lit journals opens certain doors that self-publishing does not. There a couple of those doors I'd like to go through. Hence, the lit journal thing.

But thanks for taking the time to respond.

Good grief - Linda J.

I so agree with you. Presumption abounds. I wish you well with your publishing.
Thanks for the well wishes - wheres_my_job

There's a website called "submissibles" I think - you fill out all your information, and then when you submit, you only have to make cover letter + document to upload your work in. So that at least streamlines things. Harvard Review uses a different website - that charges 3 dollars. Woo-hoo! Still working on my cover letter for that.

Then why so stressful? - Just curious

Sorry, but since you are mostly unemployed, I assumed this was income-related stress.

If the literary journal route is the way you want to go, then, why do you allow it to be so stressful? It seems more along the lines of a hobby. Hobbies shouldn't be so miserable as to require affirmations.

Just trying to help ...

Uh, your name is "Wheres-my-job" - ???

What is that supposed to mean then? Sounds unemployed, and you keep saying you only work one week a month.

It's only a moniker on a message board - wheres_my_job

People assume so much, from the little bis and pieces they read about on a message board...but if you ENJOY the idea of me being "mostly unemployed," hey go for it....
This would have been a nice thread, - if you had kept your assumptions

Telling people what they can do with their opinions REALLY makes the thread sweet, huh?

I'm not just "coming off" as high falootin'.

So shine on, WMJ fan club, shine on! LOL

Is Yoga Demonic?Oct 12, 2010
From the Seattle Times: Is the downward-facing dog somehow ... demonic? A recent essay by the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., warned Christians that yoga is contradictory to Christianity. And local megachurch pastor Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church went even further, saying earlier this year that yoga is "absolute paganism." "Should Christians stay away from yoga because of its demonic roots? Totally. Yoga is demonic," Driscoll said. "If you just ...

Any Yoga Enthusiasts Out There?Jul 12, 2011
I'm looking to get into better shape physically and mentally, and thought I might give yoga a whirl.  However, I have no interest in doing this in the presence of others, so was wondering if there are any good DVDs for beginners???  I know it might be hard to get my form right without someone to watch and tell me if I'm doing it correctly or not, but does anyone have any suggestions?  Also, if it makes a difference, I have satellite for television, not standard cable, an ...

Christians And YogaAug 18, 2013
I have an acquaintance who is a Christian. I recently started yoga classes because I have back problems and I think it will help. I mentioned this to my acquaintance, thinking maybe she would like to come along some time.  She then proceeded to tell me that I need to immediately stop the yoga because it will lead me down the path of meditation and then into Hindu religions.  She also said she won't be able to associate with me anymore if I continue with the yoga classes because I ...

Fox Proven Hazardous To BrainDec 17, 2010
Extended exposure to Fox News makes voters stupid, university study finds   The troublesome record of spin by conservative television station Fox News has long been a cause for concern to many Americans, who frequently allege that the nation's most viewed "news" network has the effect of dumbing down voters.   Turns out, they were right.   A University of Maryland study (PDF) published earlier this month found that people in the survey who had the most exp ...

I'm posting this everywhere I can think of hoping it gets some traction before the election.  Y'know how Mitt said he 'didn't remember' cutting off that kid's hair when he was 18 years old?  (Old enough to be charged as an adult with assault, but that's another issue).
