by his security detail in a "parade". He is saying "Guns don't keep you safe," yet he is being surrounded by secret service all loaded with guns to protect his behind! kind of satirical, I would say, and puts the title where it belongs!

I would say it lacks common sense & is kind of insulting - and inflammatoryNM

I saw it. It still lacks common sense - imo
[ In Reply To ..]
He's the President for goodness sakes. Of course he's going to be protected by the Secret Service with guns. His family is protected by Secret Service with guns. It's common sense.

What isn't common sense is to think just because you sleep with a gun under your pillow will save you from anything.
let's put it this way.... - if everybody's guns are taken away
[ In Reply To ..]
then there would not be any guns available to shoot the pres with, supposedly, so he may still be a target, but not from guns...so....his entourage would not need guns to protect him, would they? maybe we should all invest in something like poison-tipped blow guns! If the general population is not allowed to own guns, then neither should the "security detail." Without guns, there is no longer a threat to the pres and so security detail should be disbanded. put all of them out of a job and into the unemployment lines, as well! :-)

The president of the United States is a living target. Our kids are not. Our neighbors are not.
Sorry, but you're wrong on that point. Our kids and neighbors - ARE living targets to anyone
[ In Reply To ..]
who wants to have their 15 minutes of fame, or is it now 2 weeks or 2 months of fame? Either way, your argument doesn't hold water.
The President gets 10 CREDIBLE threats a day on - average. If you really believe what
[ In Reply To ..]
you say, what are you doing playing around here instead of devoting yourself to keeping safe?

BTW, no one I've been personally acquainted with has been murdered. In 6 decades. It happens, of course, some areas more than others, but if you really need to shut your computer and go go monitor the windows, maybe moving would be a better answer than the guns that wouldn't seem to be helping all that much.
no. Our kids and neighbors are not targets - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
and if you really think they are, you should be in favor of banning all firearms.
apparently you do not watch the news much... - our children and neighbors
[ In Reply To ..]
are being kidnapped, killed, molested, raped murdered, dumped in trash bins, dumped in woods, rivers, lakes, oceans, stuffed in garbage bags, stuffed in suitcases, barrels, and whatever else you have that can hold a child to adult body, almost on a daily basis. Guns are rarely used in those instances. Ban insanity! Put the blame where it belongs...it's not the guns that commit these crimes...it's people, if you want to call them that, but they are truly not human!
Okay, try this: How many children in your extended - circle have been murdered by a stranger?
[ In Reply To ..]
You can go back to your childhood. You have to know at least one person in the family by first name when it happened.

Unless your experience is very unusual, your answer is going to be zero. None.

It's important to keep the stuff on TV in perspective. Dividing the number of murders annually of the sort you mean into the 74 million children in the U.S. yields a 1 in 1.5 million chance of being kidnapped and murdered. For those who are sequestered in their back yards, etc., the chance is even lower.

Now, really--1 in 1.5 million? You SURE their parents need to pack guns to protect them? Even among gun owners, almost none actually carry, so that's not what's keeping our children safe.
just one - in ANYbody's family
[ In Reply To ..]
is one too many...it does not have to be in MY family or YOUR family, or the family across the street. It DOES happen on a daily basis somewhere and to deny that by narrowing it down to just my circle of family, friend, relatives, is like denying that it ever happens at all. You can't take just the numbers that YOU want, out of my family alone and compare it to the 74 million children out there that it may happen to. That is sticking your head in the sand simply to try to make your argument for taking guns away a stronger arguement. It just does not work. I am sure TV is not making this stuff up just for ratings. you are making up your own figures and that is just wrong! I am not saying at all that parents need to pack guns to protect their children, but I am saying that they should have the right to if they want to. Who's gonna protect them without the means to do so if they choose to? YOU??? you who totally denies that any kidnappings or murders even happen, and that the TV is just making this stuff up?? I don't think so.
Guns aren't going away. - Sick of false arguments.

I am so tired of this false argument: Again, as I - have asked before, SM
[ In Reply To ..]
who wants to take your guns away? Do you even know what has been proposed in the gun control argument? Do you watch any channel except Fox or listen to anyone besides Limbaugh? Educate yourself about this issue before you post nonsense on this board. If you really truly feel that unsafe, I'm sorry, but you do have to try to put things into perspective.
Just had a brilliant idea! - MtMt
[ In Reply To ..]
After we ban firearms, let's put a ban on drugs, too! Oh, wait....they already started a war on drugs 40 years ago? But people who have no regard for the law still use them? Ummmm....how about alcohol? What? They tried that too and people made their own? Well, let's just go ahead and ban all guns anyway. That way only the criminals will have access to them. We'll all be much safer when they know no one can shoot back. And I'm sure if you just tell them they aren't supposed to have a gun, they will gladly sit with you and wait for the cops to show up to take it away.
another analogy gone awry... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
there are significant laws covering drugs and alcohol. And abundant enforcement.

They are not banning guns. You can still shoot your intruder.
For now maybe - MtMt
[ In Reply To ..]
All you have to do is look at Obama's hometown to get a sense of the direction they would like things to go, and there are a lot of people who agree with them, many on this board. I understand their concerns about gun violence in the cities. However, they need to realize that in spite of some of the toughest restrictions on guns, Chicago still averages at least a murder by firearm per day. Yet, when you get out of the city, guns are in abundance but crime with those guns is not. We already have enoug gun laws in place. The issues that need to be dealt with are gangs, drugs, and poverty, as gun violence increases when those things increase. The analogy was just to make the point that more laws only affect the law abiding citizens who are not the problem.
gangs, drugs, and poverty - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Since you make reference to Obama's home town of Chicago, and the gangs, drugs, and poverty that plague our urban centers, I think you might be interested in knowing that gun control is more popular among African Americans than whites.
Shocker - MtMt
[ In Reply To ..]
Given that the demographics in the poverty stricken urban areas are largely African American and they are most likely to be affected by gang violence. If our government wants to do something to improve the situation, maybe they should focus on improving our economy and giving people trapped in inner cities some hope and a way to a better life instead of criminalizing guns.
Chicago - MtMt
[ In Reply To ..]
I only use Chicago as a reference because they have been extremely aggressive with gun control, to the point of infringing on constitutional rights. It has had no effect on their crime rates because criminals will find a way. Even if access to guns was limited, a quick internet search will give you detailed instructions on how to make a pipe bomb or any number of other deadly weapons. There will always be a divide on the issue. A farmer living in the middle of nowhere who relies on his gun to put food on the table and protect his family because it may take law enforcement an hour or more to get to his place if he calls 911 will always see guns as an important part of his well being. Someone in the middle of gang territory will probably see a gun as a murder weapon.
Oh Lord. Who told you someone was going - to take your gun? NM

I don't even have a gun - MtMt
[ In Reply To ..]
When they ban one type of gun and it doesn't have the desired effect, then they will try to ban to the next one and the next one. Clearly, you missed the point of my post. Let me spell it out one more time......More laws and bans only work for law abiding people. The criminals will always be able to get what they want on the black market in spite of any ban or restriction.

Isn't that generally what happens when people - are debating an issue?
[ In Reply To ..]
The same could be said for everyone else on this or any other board who holds firmly to their beliefs and tries to clarify their meaning when it seems that someone misinterprets something they said.
So what are you going to do? Follow your kids - around with an SM

assault weapon to protect them 24/7? Geez, the fear factor coming from Fox and the NRA is working overtime on this. Yes, it can be a scary world, but I really don't understand your point at all. Since no one wants to "take your guns", what part of the gun control issue do you not agree with? If we ever have an repub president again, will you proclaim publically that he/she should not be protected by secret service, or is this just for Obama?

I see you are regurgitating the newest NRA - line. Pitiful. NM
