Anyone know how to temper a whiskey cake that is

Posted: Jan 12, 2014

Tried a new whiskey fruitcake recipe, made a slight error by adding 2 cups of dried fruit instead of 1, so the cake came out really dry. Found a suggestion to poke holes in it with a skewer and pour whiskey over the cake so it would go into the cake; do this every day for a week. The texture is now good, but the taste--whoooo, baby! Even with whipped cream it is too strong. Would it be possible use the same hole-poking technique using a sweet fruit juice or something? Would hate to toss it now. All suggestions welcome. Thanks!;

Not sure I understand the problem - lol

How can there be too much hooch in the cake????

OK, I guess there can be. Hard to imagine, but ... can you put it on a rack and poke holes all the way through to let some drain out? Save it for another cake. If you have to, perhaps you can encourage it by putting it on a thick stack of paper towels. That would wick it out.

After that, letting it age a bit might help. The whisky would mellow, maybe? Evaporate?

Fairies like whisky -- it is one of their preferred foods -- so don't forget to leave a bit of cake out for them.

When I made a rum cake and pour a lot of rum in like that, I just wait a couple days to settle it and allow the spices to mature. I one made boozy bread pudding that set the nose hairs on fire, but the bread pudding did mellow out in the ensuing days ;)

I used to make - Rum balls

By the 3rd or 4th day, that alcohol flavor mellowed. If it's already been a few days and it's still potent, well...don't serve it to any children.

If it's not overdone, you could throw it in the oven for a bit---that helps alcohol evaporate, but fruit cakes already have a bad reputation for being door stoppers, so you'd have to be real careful.

Thanks for the replies. - Funny and helpful. sm

The cake is still wrapped up, so will let it sit out for a while and see what happens. Was also thinking about putting it in the oven, but afraid it might burst into flames, so might try it with a thick slice first. Last resort: Crumble it on ice cream. Can wait to start my diet later. Thanks again!

LOL - see msg

You could always roll a ball of ice cream in the crumbs and flambe it, lol.

Use it to make trifle ... - anon

or use it instead of bread in bread pudding.

Cat With Temper TantrumsJul 10, 2015
Maybe somebody who has experience with kids can help me with this.  My Grady is about 3 years old and when he doesn't get what he wants (treats or wet food), will throw temper tantrums.  He will knock the water bowls over, pull books or anything else off of shelves, knock over a bowl of dry food, slam doors shut, anything to make me angry.  He just does it to get a rise out of me.  I try my best to not respond, but after the umpteenth time of mopping the kitchen or picki ...

Obama’s Temper Tantrum Putting American Lives at Risk” by Donna Garner 3.23.13    Obama’s temper tantrum is putting Americans’ lives at Risk.  Because he is furious that the Republicans did not back down when he tried to bully them into caving on sequestration, he is determined to make sure the federal agency cuts are in the places that will be most noticeable and hurtful to the public. This way he thinks he can turn the public’s wrath toward th ...

The Game's Over Mr President - Your Team Lost. End Your Trump Temper Tantrum, Show Some DignityJan 03, 2017
What’s Barry’s game? That’s the question many of President Obama’s basketball opponents have asked over the years as Barack hurtled himself around the court in the final minutes of a match. From all accounts he could be a mean, nasty sonofabitch in those final few seconds, especially if his team was losing. The answer to my question is thus self-evident: to win at all costs. That ethos made Obama a very competitive basketball player, and a very effective politician. But it ...

The share of total income going to the top 1 percent of earners, which stood at 8.9 percent in 1976, rose to 23.5 percent by 2007, but during the same period, the average inflation-adjusted hourly wage declined by more than 7 percent. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/17/business/17view.html?_r=1&hpw How are you doing?   Quite frankly, it would not kill the "rich" to go back to the 1990's tax rates.  Many have gotten even richer from sending jobs off shore and Wall St ...

So, when a Romney fundraiser costs $40,000 per person it's an outrage but when Obama has a $40,000 per person fundraiser it's okay.  It sure feels good to get that clarified. Yeah, because cares just that much... Obama using food stamp cash to fund Michelle's Let's Move program. As you dig into your Butterball with all the trimmings this Thanksgiving, remember that millions of famished schoolkids around America may be forced to forgo classic turkey — and chow down instead on vegan black-bean patties and organic locavore quinoa salad. Atomic CakeMar 25, 2013
In the Chicago Area some bakeries made an atomic cake.  It had various fillers of your choice including fudge, banana, strawberry, vanilla custard, etc.  My family always had one of these cakes if there was a birthday.  Here in Florida no bakeries make an atomic cake.  I really miss it! Of course, while I'm thinking about it there is no other than a Chicago Pizza in Florida.  Pizza Hutt just doesn't cut it.     ...

OPINIONS ABOUT WEDDING CAKEJun 30, 2010
My 25 DD is getting married next June.   She does not want to have a receiving line after the mass which is a Catholic ceromony because she said it is awkard.   So intead she would like to have a receving line at the reception where the guests line up and the bride and groom pass out the cake and then thank people for coming. I am totally against this but she said that is the way it is these days. She has only been to two weddings in her life.   I have not been ...

Funnel Cake-like ThingsNov 13, 2015
When I was a child, mom had this iron-thing that you would dip into a sweet pancake type batter and put it in hot grease.  Once done, off would come the crispy thing in different shapes-butterflies, etc.  Then she would dip them in confectioner's sugar.  Does anyone know what this is called and can you still buy them?  I know, I was so technical in my description LOL. ...

Has Anyone Ever Baked A Cake In The Slow Cooker?Dec 11, 2015
Our oven is broke and I don't have a toaster oven.  The only thing I have is a slow cooker, foreman grill and waffle maker (the latter two of course will not work). LOL I am so craving some chocolate cake and I just found a recipe for mocha oatmeal cake, or brownies, cobbler or whatever. I've made cornbread in the slow cooker and it came out really good, but what about regular cakes?  Has anyone ever done one and if so do you know how long you would cook it for.  There ...

Anyone Have A Good Lemon Bread/cake RecipeDec 24, 2009
Okay, just made a lemon bread.  It is moist but not as lemony as I would like.  Safeway makes a good lemony cake (or bread) thing.  So moist and lemony and I'd like to make something similar.  This recipe I just made called for 3/4 c. lemon yogurt and 1 tablepoon lemon rind.  It is moist but not a real lemon flavor (faint lemon flavor).   I tried another recipe using a lemon cake and added a box of lemon pudding.  Again, most but not real lemony.   ...

Blueberry Sour Cream Coffee CakeApr 01, 2012
I just made the most scrumptious blueberry sour cream coffee cake. It was so moist and sweet, but not too sweet. DH told me it tasted like something we used to get in Germany. So I wanted to pass on the recipe if anyone is interested. I can't wait til later to have another piece. The recipe said to use a mixer, but I creamed the butter and sugar with a fork (my mixer is packed away), then I used a wire whisk to mix the rest. I also used a bundt pan, but am sure it could be made in ano ...
