Cat with temper tantrums

Posted: Jul 10, 2015

Maybe somebody who has experience with kids can help me with this.  My Grady is about 3 years old and when he doesn't get what he wants (treats or wet food), will throw temper tantrums.  He will knock the water bowls over, pull books or anything else off of shelves, knock over a bowl of dry food, slam doors shut, anything to make me angry.  He just does it to get a rise out of me.  I try my best to not respond, but after the umpteenth time of mopping the kitchen or picking up every last piece of kibble, I get upset.  I never hit him, only call his name loudly.  He's such a picky eater and I spoil him with the treats, but he can't keep having his way.  The more I say no, the worse his behavior gets.  I don't have kids or have ever dealt with discipline.  None of my other cats act this way, only Grady.  Any suggestions?  I know he is hungry, but will not eat the dry food that's put out.  It's a power struggle.  I feel so silly having a power struggle with a little cat, LOL. ;

Mine is doing the same--he's hungry--he can't - be reasoned with

I work about 60 hours a week approximately 10 feet from where I feed him (a spare bathroom). If I put out a full bowl, the 2 of them eat and gorge and sometimes "give it back," so I started small meals, better luck keeping it down.

But the big male cat, goes into that bathroom and thumps the cabinet door repeatedly to get my attention. If that doesn't work, he goes in and tears up any bag he can find. He stands in the middle of it and tears it, like a dog. I give him a little kibble, and he settles down.

Coexistence has produced feeding a little food whenever he asks for it. I don't know that it is the best answer in dietary needs, but, I gave up, he wins.

Also, the water "Bowl" is a cup in the bathtub because they constantly knock it over (I too got tired of cleaning up water). I have at least gotten it to where they can drink out of a glass next to my glass at the computer (which weirds out some people), and the fish tank. They don't hurt the fish, they just drink his water.

In reading the rest of your comment, he seems to like a treat. Maybe that is in some pouch or something that you can feed just a few. Used to be a product called Tender-Vittles, but I don't know if those are good or not. Maybe feed parts of a can, more frequently?

Some people have good luck with timed automatic - feeders that produce a small - sm

amount of food at set intervals. Cats have a good sense of time, and will often wait by the feeder in anticipation as that special time nears.

I don't think he's specifically trying to anger you, - but instead trying to get your attention. (sm)

Mine does similar things if she's hungry (and she's currently being gradually put on a diet, anyway), and thinks I'm spending too much time on the computer and not listening to what she wants.

Cats are very good at training us! One of my former cats (an older girl who needed to eat every couple of hours to keep her weight up) knew all she had to do was walk towards a spot on the carpet she had once soiled in the past, and I would drop what I was doing and come running.

He might be bored or jealous of your other cats, maybe he is not getting enough play time or attention from you in other ways. Play some games with him (laser pointer, tinfoil balls, interactive cat toys). My Siamese loves to play and does silly things to get my attention but nothing destructive. You could always ask your vet or attend kitty counseling, lol!

Good to know I'm not alone. I've had 10 cats total in my life and he's the only one who has ever acted like this. I love him dearly even though he makes me want to pull my hair out sometimes. I use a feeder ball where he has to move it to get the treats out. That works for a little while, but not long. Since I have 5 other cats, I don't think the timed feeder would work, not enough food for my brood. Maybe I just have to accept him the way he is and give in, and find inventive ways to contain the mess.

Bathtub water bowl? That's funny. One of my cats used to tip the water bowl over too. I used to keep a plastic placemat under the bowls and he would try to "dig" next to the bowl before he drank. Funniest thing to watch him do that, digging for water. I removed the placement, no more spills, unless Grady does it.

My cat likes to play in the water bowl, so I started putting her dish in the bathroom sink. When she dumps it over (almost daily), the water just goes down the drain. I have to keep the dogs' water outside or she'd dump theirs.

I have a cat that moves the water bowl every time she drinks - from it. Not spilling it but

just putting her paw in the water bowl and moving it around. Doesn't matter where i put it. Too funny!

Great idea about putting the bowl in the sink!!

attention. Though cats are nortoriously said to be loners, they do crave some attention, especially from their owners. Just a rub or two, or the "treat." Sounds like he is doing everything he can to get your attention. I have a little tuxedo cat girl, named Itsy, who does the same thing. she will knock things off my desk just to gain my attention. As soon as I talk to her and pet her a bit, she'll be fine until the next time. They need love too. :)

Anyone Know How To Temper A Whiskey Cake That Is Jan 12, 2014
Tried a new whiskey fruitcake recipe, made a slight error by adding 2 cups of dried fruit instead of 1, so the cake came out really dry. Found a suggestion to poke holes in it with a skewer and pour whiskey over the cake so it would go into the cake; do this every day for a week. The texture is now good, but the taste--whoooo, baby! Even with whipped cream it is too strong. Would it be possible use the same hole-poking technique using a sweet fruit juice or something? Would hate to toss it now. ...

The Game's Over Mr President - Your Team Lost. End Your Trump Temper Tantrum, Show Some DignityJan 03, 2017
What’s Barry’s game? That’s the question many of President Obama’s basketball opponents have asked over the years as Barack hurtled himself around the court in the final minutes of a match. From all accounts he could be a mean, nasty sonofabitch in those final few seconds, especially if his team was losing. The answer to my question is thus self-evident: to win at all costs. That ethos made Obama a very competitive basketball player, and a very effective politician. But it ...
