Obama using food stamp cash to fund Michelle's Let's Move program.

As you dig into your Butterball with all the trimmings this Thanksgiving, remember that millions of famished schoolkids around America may be forced to forgo classic turkey — and chow down instead on vegan black-bean patties and organic locavore quinoa salad.

But news has spread among the poor, like leafy green vegetables, that it wasn’t heartless Republicans who triggered the cuts.

Rather, some of the food-stamp cash was snatched to pay for Michelle Obama’s pet project, Let’s Move. What?

It’s come to this. Some 76 million meals a year will vanish from this city — poof! — partly because the president diverted money from SNAP to the first lady’s signature program, part of her Let’s Move anti-obesity initiative.

As is stated in the NY Post, the Let's Move initiative is part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act which, in turn, is a bill attached to the REauthorization of funding for the Child Nutrition Act, signed into law by LBJ in 1966. In 1998 it was expanded from its original school lunch program provisions to include free breakfasts for elementary school children and snacks for those in after-school programs. Of note, NUTRITION STANDARDS were FIRST applied to the CNA in 2004 under W with added requirements for the development of wellness policies focused on nutrition, physical activity and fruits and vegetable snack programs.

FYI, the president does not "move" money around from one program to the next. It is the responsibility of Congress to renew funding. All the president does is sign the done deal. BTW, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 passed the Senate by a unanimous voice vote (zero "nays") and with bipartisan support in the House. Also, the Let's Move program derives much of its funding from organizations and private corporations, such as Nike, the GENYOUth Foundation, ChildObesity180, Kaiser Permanente, and the General Mills Foundation. The program is administered jointly by The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

Facts omitted in the NY Post are deceptive in this regard. The original SNAP funds they refer to were part of the stimulus package. They were designed to be temporary and were set to expire in Fall 2013. They would have expired with or without the Let's Move program. Naturally, the Post did not provide a link to the context from which they extracted the president's "admission" that he allegedly took cash from one pocket to feed another, so the questionable veracity of that allegation speaks for itself.

As for that silly Thanksgiving and Butterball imagery, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act is not slated to take effect until next year, so "millions of famished schoolkids around America" will NOT be forced to eat vegan black-bean patties and organic locavore quinoa salad by the WH health food Nazis. That's just another typical case of right-wing hysterics making it all up as they go along.

In the Chicago Area some bakeries made an atomic cake. It had various fillers of your choice including fudge, banana, strawberry, vanilla custard, etc. My family always had one of these cakes if there was a birthday. I am from Chicago and we used to be able to get atomic cakes. They were filled with different kinds of fillings of your choice; i.e., fudge, banana, strawberry, custard, etc. However, I now live in Florida (St. Petersburg area) and can't find any bakeries that makes these. Tried a new whiskey fruitcake recipe, made a slight error by adding 2 cups of dried fruit instead of 1, so the cake came out really dry. Found a suggestion to poke holes in it with a skewer and pour whiskey over the cake so it would go into the cake; do this every day for a week. The texture is now good, but the taste--whoooo, baby! Even with whipped cream it is too strong. Would it be possible use the same hole-poking technique using a sweet fruit juice or something? Would hate to toss it now. ...

When I was a child, mom had this iron-thing that you would dip into a sweet pancake type batter and put it in hot grease. Once done, off would come the crispy thing in different shapes-butterflies, etc. Then she would dip them in confectioner's sugar. Does anyone know what this is called and can you still buy them? I just made the most scrumptious blueberry sour cream coffee cake. It was so moist and sweet, but not too sweet. DH told me it tasted like something we used to get in Germany.
