My New Career: Your Input Needed!

Posted: Jan 18, 2012

I need to find something else.  Perhaps you can chime in here with some ideas and help me as well as others!

I am VERY detail oriented and have excellent command of English.  I love animals.  I enjoy puzzles and just about anything that is thought-provoking.

I prefer dealing with things rather than the public but can deal with interacting with a handful of coworkers.  I don't want to sell because I'm not a liar and am not fake.  Generally speaking, I prefer to work with men rather than women but don't want to work with low-class males.  I would prefer to work from home, but that's not a requirement because it's not just realistic.

I believe that coding will be going the way of the do-do bird -- just as MT is doing now -- in a few years so don't want to pursue that.

I don't want to be exposed to pathogen-carrying blood so phlebotomist is out.  Also, I prefer not to work in a hospital because I don't want mandatory vaccinations.  (That may rule out working for city, county, or state law enforcement, but I'm unsure about that so if you know then by all means please chime in here.)  I don't want to be poking into people's orifices, etc. so nurse is off the table.  That said, I loved working in the pathology department, and the specimens there (or the pathologist's blood-soaked tennis shoes outside the shower!) didn't bother me one bit.

Classes/School for a year or two would be fine, but at my age (almost 50) I don't want to invest the time or money (loans) in a four-year program.

Whatever I pursue should be viable in the "new economy," which appears VERY bleak.

Any ideas?  Maybe we can learn from each other!  :)

become a mortician - luckyladyinca

It is a growing field here, and from what I hear, the pay is good!

Hey, great idea for the OP (sm) - CMTx2

The two people I've known who were training to be morticians absolutely loved it.

Hmmm... - Looking

Actually I dated a mortician once. His family was in the business and owned a funeral home. My friend wound up leaving the profession to open a limousine service.

I also once worked with an MT who was a trained funeral director.

I wonder how viable that is longterm? There is a new process taking the UK by storm whereby the corpse is chemically broken down into water (hydrogen and oxygen). That water byproduct is then released back into the water supply.... Ewwww!! That gives me the creeps.

At any rate, they are citing decreased costs and saving the land that would normally be used as funeral plots. I wonder how long it will be before that practice takes off here on this side of the Atlantic.

A cursory online search revealed that 2-1/2 to 4 years of study is required.

This one is still on the table. Thank you for the suggestion!! :)
It already is - In the states

Funny you should bring that up! Just last week actually it was in the news here in the city I work in (Northern Minnesota) that a funeral home was moving in that direction. Well...it went to a vote and the city rejected it as there were a lot of complaints about the water quality, etc. Gross! So glad they turned it down!! But I guess, beware, it is bound to happen somewhere here sooner or later!

love you post and will be following the responses - same boat...

I'm particularly interested in your post, since we seem to have a similar profile in terms of skills, interests, and age. I am totally flummoxed about what to do next.

I agree with you totally about coding, and at this time in my life I too don't want to incur a loan.

Good luck to you!

If you love animals, then why not pursue that? - dogs are the new kids

[ In Reply To ..]
Veterinary technician programs typically run about 1-2 years though the pay is not spectacular, guess it depends on where you live. The new up and coming thing, in my opinion, is veterinary physical therapy and rehabilitation as more and more people are willing to put their animals through surgery and thus rehab becomes a necessity. Dog grooming? You can go to grooming school and be trained in as little as 5 weeks, but a lot of the skills and speed (and money) come with experience. It's not terribly difficult to find a job in that field with no experience, much unlike MT, and yes, I'm speaking from experience. Just be aware that anything involving working with animals can be very physically demanding and you probably won't become wealthy doing it, but it's worth looking in to and with the high rate of pet ownership in this country it's likely to be steady work.

From experience, worse thing about working with animals - is dealing with the owners. nm

dogs - me too

I do dog sitting. I am home being an MT anyway, so I have company and they just lay near me on the floor or if small enough, on my lap. I can do 4 in my home at a time as I am inside city limits but that is enough for me. Check into some area outside city limits or whatever your town allows and see if you can set something up, with a lot of area for them to run, and a building to keep them in during the night.

Like that one! - Looking

Frankly, I'm more of a feline and equine person so hadn't even thought about dog grooming. That is a good one! I really like the 5 weeks training part... :)

Thank you for your input! :)

Rethinking Dog Grooming... - Looking

With the economy in the horrible shape that it's in, everyone is cutting back on nonessential items. That will be the case anytime the economy turns south.

I looked into becoming an electrologist, but since I have an electrologist myself but have not had an appointment in months due to being short on funds, I scrapped that idea. The lady I go to now has wide-open days for appointments, whereas before she would be booked solid. I would presume that dog grooming would fit into the same "luxury" category. I also wonder if folks will stop buying "high-maintenance" breeds that require regular grooming and opt for other types of dogs. (?)

I haven't ruled it out completely but will look into it a little more.

If I had the time (and money) to go back to school, - I"d be a paralegal or legal secretary.

The pay is good, and there seems to be no shortage of job openings. I also would have liked to be a court reporter. Instead, like a true idiot, I chose MT, which means I'll likely spend my so-called golden years on welfare.

If you're young enough to be able to put aside a couple more years to go to school, by all means, go for it!

Court Reporting, perhaps? (nm) - Making A Change Too

My son is a military man, has been for near 15 years now.  As long as he has been active duty, it seems that he is deployed for at least 6 months out of the year.  About 7 years ago he met a nice gal who lived in the city where he was stationed, things progressed and they married.  She was fully aware, of course, that he is active duty and what was required of his service.  6 years ago they had my grandson AND, were informed that they would be stationed elsewhere.  DIL ...

Requesting Conservative InputJan 04, 2012
I have read conservatives are against Obama's health care law.  I would like to know who should pay for people who refuse to buy health insurance.  For example, I hired a handyman out of the local paper.  he told me about his appendicitis.  He said he did not buy health care because he knew govt would take care of his bill if he could not.  Why do you not wish for each individual to be responsible for their hospital bills?  Not looking for argument, just would ...

Question, Would Love Input For This Problem.Oct 08, 2014
My husband died recently.  He told me over and over again that I would be taken care of, that he had paid into a retirement type account.  When I was going through all of the paperwork you have to do after someone passes away, I stumbled on an insurance company and I called them.  They were able to confirm there was money and said they would be sending me a letter stating how much money it was, I would get this letter in the next 2 weeks.  For the first time in a very long ti ...

Copyediting Or Medical Coding As A Career After MTJan 10, 2016
Hello, I do not have the money to keep spending on no where careers.  I am wondering what people think would be the better at home career for someone who is already an MT?  Someone a few years back said she was an MT and got into copyediting after.   For those who don't know, a copyeditor is kind of like a proofreader but they also look at content.  A medical coder codes procedures, etc. for billing purposes.  I have looked into both and cannot make a decision. &n ...
