We're bombarded with such seculo-humanist messages as "social distancing." The first formal "healthcare workers" were motivated by love of God. They took in and tended to people others wouldn't. "Contagion" as we know it wasn't understood; however, people saw that sickness could spread, so it had to be from a supernatural motive that they did this.

Entire religious orders grew around caring for the sick. The Knights Hospitaller (Knights of Malta) had their origins in caring for sick or injured pilgrims going to the Holy Land. St. Elizabeth of Hungary built a hospital, and took care of the sick herself.

None of them did this for fame, self-seeking or money. It was in obedience to Jesus' precept: "Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me."
