Economist on rising Obamacare costs: You are going to have

Posted: Oct 30, 2016

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Economist Chris Butler discussed the rising cost of health insurance plans rising next year under the Affordable Care Act, saying he expects the populace to express more outrage as they learn they will be priced out of health care options. Butler told Chris Stigall on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT to expect more public demonstrations of anger as prices move upward. Right now, I think you do have to say that A, it’s failing and that B, I think next year, you’re going to have a bunch of people that don’t get the subsidies that make the premiums a little bit more affordable that are just going to riot because it’s just too expensive for most people if you don’t qualify for subsidies.” He stated he still objects to court rulings siding with the government requiring individuals to purchase insurance or pay a penalty. “You can go back to the Supreme Court decision on this. I’m still shocked that we are being told that our constitution says that it is allowable to force to people to buy something. When I hear people talk about forcing them, not only to buy something, but to make the penalty stiffer if they don’t, I just get queasy.” Butler also thinks there could be simple solutions to lower costs and cites buying plans across state lines as an example. “Do you know what New Jersey is anticipating, their’s in considerably less, as I recall, than Pennsylvania, yet we are not allowed to cross state borders to buy insurance. There are a lot of states, by the way, that have big cities on borders that are actually going to have huge increases but they border on a state that is quite reasonable in its growth in premium costs. We talked about that while all of this was being discussed back in 2010, some of the quick fixes you could make that would have a difference to our healthcare system, that was one of them, allow people to buy insurance across state lines to help equalize some of this stuff.” ;

The people getting the freebies are the ones who are - for Obamacare. A huge portion

of people on Obamacare are totally subsidized. Someone has to pay for that.

For the rest of us, who can afford $1500 a month with a $10,000 deductible?

We're already paying a ton for insurance that - covers very little. The only

[ In Reply To ..]
prescriptions my husband takes are not covered. I refuse to pay one penny more. Goodbye insurance.

Thanks Obama!

The irresponsibility and deceit employed to manipulate - a crafty way to actually PAY

[ In Reply To ..]
for Obamacare is outright disingenuous!

It’s unconstitutional to force people to buy something they don’t want. It forces people who do have morality to help pay for abortions and Viagra for sex offenders and pedophiles. It is going to strangle small businesses and make the price of everything go up. Provisions will be passed as soon as possible when congress thinks we are not looking, that every single illegal alien in this country will be covered. What is so bad about that? We are already in a recession. Our government is borrowing money from countries that will soon come looking to collect. Someone needs to tell the president in hard times you should be saving rather than spending money you don’t have.

This country is under a curse. The Democrats and liberals act like godless people. Obama was mocking Armageddon once like it is some kind of joke.

Does anyone in DC care about the constitution anymore?
People for government controlled healthcare seem to want America - to be like Europe. Well get this,

Germany is paying up to $400,000/year to some Muslim immigrants(those with 4 wives and 23 children). Could it happen in America?

This was the plan from the beginning. The insurance - companies were lured into

supporting this abomination by Obama promising them huge profits. Once they got on board, Obama pulled the rug out from underneath them and placed requirements on them they couldn't do and continue to make a profit.

The idea was to drive them out of business and have a single payer system, which gives the government more control.

Once the govt. is paying the bill for all the citizen's healthcare, it can be held "hostage" to force us to conduct ourselves as the govt. dictates, i.e. what we eat, how much we are allowed to weigh, you fill in the blanks.

Think it can't happen? Think again. Great Britain, which has single payer healthcare already has "inspectors" whose job it is to go the homes of known obese people and check their refrigerators to see what they are eating. This is only the tip of the iceberg.

These people think the citizens of the U.S. are not as capable as they in handling their lives. Pretty arrogant don't you think? Google the term "Fabian Socialism" and "the Cloward Piven Strategy" and you'll get the picture.

Until legislators stop forcing insurance to cover various things, - everybody out there has a condition

[ In Reply To ..]
they want covered and Obamacare forces those insurance companies to cover it, and the rest of us not getting subsidies pay for that.

If it costs an incredible amount for a treatment that affects a significant percentage of the population, competition will force companies to find a better way.

With illnesses that only affect a small population, competition can still address those concerns better that government dictate can.

Sounds like a death panel to me. - nm

What is never mentioned is many providers refuse to - accept Obamacare, with.

[ In Reply To ..]
reimbursement rates that are lower than that of Medicaid, provders cannot afford to accept them.

Now, the Left turns this into an emotional discussion, with words like greed, caring, heartless, so the conversation never addresses these facts.

The one thing that does not get discussed or a lot of press is that the way that the system is designed.

There is not a lot of money left in America, the underclass is financially impoverished. The middle class is shrinking and the upper classes don’t participate.

There is, however a large pool of assets in the middle class and some in the lower and underclass that can be grabbed.

The way this system works is that the medical industrial complex works with the insurance complex and the overreaching government to set price points.

Price points on how much the medical industrial complex charges, and price points on how much the insurance charges. The government is the enforcer.

As insurance price points increase, and medical costs increase, and the government continues to say who gets what, the middle class can no longer afford insurance and they are dumped into Medicaid.

Medicaid pays everything, but is not free but instead dissolves assets to keep the whole ball going.

Anyone with assets in this country who cannot bow out of the system will be getting robbed.

Conclusion: Get out of the system while you can.

FYI: Everyone who purchases a health insurance policy is.... - sm

insured under the ACA, also known as Obamacare. The ACA is a law under which all private insurance companies must operate. So, no, patient's are not being refused because of "Obamacare".

Not true. Obamacare is nothing more than Medicaid. - Physicians are opting out.

[ In Reply To ..]
With physician shortages as well as less people buying into it, it's going bust.

There are other insurances out there you can get that are not in the marketplace.
The nightmare that is Obamacare forces insurance - to cover things like birth control
[ In Reply To ..]
for a 60 YO and stupid stuff like that.

There are alternatives out there. You just have to do the research.

People have decided it's cheaper to pay the tax (penalty) than it is to buy a policy. That's why they are going to raise the penalty. So much for liberty.
Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) is not insurance, it is a law. sm - VTMT

thinks (or thought) that Obamacare is a good idea can't do basic math. Or maybe they are not directly impacted since they are covered by their employer's insurance.

It was clear to the rest of us that O-care was a farce. A lie.

BTW, I am forced to deal with Obamacare and it is indeed a mess and I had insurance before it passed. What people don't realize is that the new standard set by O-care represents the old catastrophic extremely inexpensive coverage of a few years ago — massively high deductible, but dirt cheap. Only now, it is several times more expensive for the same terrible insurance.

But hey, we all have insurance now. /sarc

Health care costs - old and burned out

[ In Reply To ..]
were rising at double digit levels before the ACA and 20 million people who are now insured were uninsured. The only way we will ever have affordable health insurance is national health care - like every other advanced country on the planet.

Trying to equate "advanced" countries with "free" - healthcare. What a joke.

[ In Reply To ..]
Health insurance should be like it was originally. Only major medical. The rest like office visits should be paid by the consumer. You'd see cost go down 75%.

Not sure - old and burned out

[ In Reply To ..]
what you are trying to say here. Health care is not free. The English, for example, pay a value added tax of 17%. It hurts each time they buy something but everyone in the country gets health care and no one has to declare bankruptcy just because they get sick. The cost of an office visit could conceivably go down if the doctor's office did not have to fill out so many forms but 75%? How did you come up with that?

Major medical/catastrophic insurance is basically....sm - oldMT

[ In Reply To ..]
What you get now with low tier policies. With deductibles and copays, most people only use in in cases of extreme illness. One plus is included screening and other preventative treatments.

[ In Reply To ..]
Do you not realize that healthcare was rising before ACA was even thought of. If you want to know why the costs are going up, read your bills from hospital/doctor visits. Hospitals are charging ridiculous amounts and the insurance companies have to pay them. I talked to my insurance company recently and they said there is nothing they can do about paying these astronomical charges; it's all in the coding. The American Medical Association is the one who makes the codes so those are the ones you should be writing and complaining to. The ACA has helped many people get insurance, so sorry if those against it don't really care about those people but the ACA is not the "cause" of rates going up.

Yes, it is. Do the math. If Obamacare forces insurance - companies to cover everything,

[ In Reply To ..]
that raises the cost for the rest of us, who are paying for those who "ACA has helped get insurance."

It's the rest of us who pay for this bloated insurance paying for your ACA insurance.

They figured we would just roll over and buy this monstrosity, but many younger people are just forgoing insurance and some of us would rather pay the penalty.

really - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Well, who do you think was paying for it before, we were. Costs were transferred from the people who couldn't get insurance and using the ER for their care and we were paying for it. The reason ACA isn't working is because of those young people not getting insurance. Everyone should have gotten insurance if it was going to work right. So, blame the people who won't get insurance instead of ACA. Personally, I'd rather see national healthcare so now I guess you'll call me a socialist whatever. Other countries laugh at us because we don't have it but hey, that would put a dent in the big insurance companies profits.
Blame the people who wouldn't get healthcare? - Why would a 25 YO want to pay
[ In Reply To ..]
$700 a month for insurance when they are generally healthy? Who would do that?

But you want them to just to pay for your healthcare.

Try looking at the big picture.

[ In Reply To ..]
By the way, it sounds like you assume I have free healthcare. I pay for healthcare without subsidies. Who would do that? Maybe the same 25-year-old who won't pay for healthcare but texts and gets in a wreck and we pay for him to go to the ER (not heard $700 for a plan for them but whatever). Why don't you look at the big picture.
Oh come on. I can play that game too. I see people at the - grocery store with tattoos

and 5 earrings on each ear with cell phones paying for their groceries with food stamps.
So you are okay with the govt forcing people to buy - what they don't want or need, just
