House defeats TPA by a huge vote.

Posted: Jun 12, 2015

The vote was 302-126. The House killed a worker aid bill that was tied to the president's main agenda item -- legislation that would give Obama "fast-track" authority to negotiate trade deals. Without it, the trade push withers for now.

The vote marked a stunning blow for the president at the hands of his own party, with Nancy Pelosi and labor unions helping drive the stake into the legislation in the end. The biggest defection for Obama came when Pelosi joined the rebellion in opposing TAA. Though she supports the worker aid, she said voting against it was the only way to "slow down the fast track."

The House did hold a symbolic vote and approved the "fast-track" legislation moments after the TAA measure failed. The 219-211 vote showed the trade bill technically had enough support. But under the rules in effect, the overall legislation, previously approved by the Senate, could not advance to the White House unless both halves were agreed to.

House Republican leaders, who have been Obama's biggest supporters on the trade issue, said after the vote they could try again next week.

Jan Schakowsky explained why they voted against Obama's favorite deal.

This trade deal will be a lot like NAFTA, the Cons' baby. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Just like NAFTA, most Dems will oppose this, but Cons will eventually get the trade deal passed because big corporations want it so they'll make it happen whether "fast track" or "slow track."

Then just like NAFTA, Cons will spend the next couple decades blaming Dems for it even though Cons were the ones who wanted it with a majority of Dems against it.

Learn from history this time and watch the Cons pass it, but realize that the majority of Dems oppose it while Cons will be the ones to get it passed through the House of Representatives and make it happen.

NAFTA was passed during Bill Clinton's presidency - and was bipartisan. NM

NAFTA in that regard.

The Bill of Rights specifically guarantees that:

Congress shall make no law ... abridging ... the right of the People to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

How in the world do you think it's possible for us to petition for redress if we don't even know what Congress is voting on?

Evil never takes a holiday. This Bill will be back with even more pork and “surprises.”

many of these trade agreements favor other countries and put limits and restrictions on the US.

I lived through every day of it. I also know that the NAFTA "free trade agreement" was signed by lame duck president George H. W. Bush and was the handiwork of the Bush administration and the GOP's baby that The Heritage Organization called "Ronald Reagan's Vision Realized." (see link below) While right-wing fringe media has been pushing the rhetoric for a while now that it was Democrats who brought us NAFTA, Foxbots and radio talking heads know the truth versus their propaganda rewrite, and it's handy to have recorded history when the fleecing of the gullible followers cranks into high and history starts getting whitewashed in the right-wing bubble.

The OP about Democrats in the House of Representatives killing the TPA very much mirrors the history of congressional Democrats being opposed to NAFTA, which they absolutely were. Oh, sure, by the time of the final vote, many Democrats who opposed it were cajoled and lobbied into voting for it after two additional side agreements were passed that protected workers and the environment, but vote totals and history don't lie, and in the end, a majority of Democrats were still opposed to NAFTA while in both the House and the Senate, congressional Republicans voted overwhelmingly in favor of the agreement: In the House, 132 Republicans voted in favor with only 43 House Republicans opposed, and in the Senate, 34 Republicans voted in favor with only 10 Republicans against. After being heavily lobbied, the majority of Democrats in the House voted against NAFTA with 156 opposed and 102 in favor and Democrats split in the Senate but still a majority opposed with 28 opposed and 27 in favor.

Those are the facts. We do record history. The Dems in 1993 very much mirrored what is going on now, as the majority oppose TPP, and the Democratic president is lobbying hard to win their support. I'm guessing some of them too will eventually be cajoled and lobbied into supporting the TPP, but a majority will ultimately oppose it too with a majority of Republicans passing it anyway.

I hope I'm wrong and that Congress will kill the TPP and Ronald Reagan's vision for free trade. But by all means, don't take my word for it; watch Reagan himself in action here in 1979 as he announces his candidacy for President of the United States:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcTPwHY-LpY

History points to the inevitability that the TPP will eventually pass with the majority of GOP support just as NAFTA did. Time will tell, and history will record it.
NAFTA being so secretive. Invoking Reagan and Bush - and calling people Foxbots

Interesting to hear the facts about the history of free trade in our nation being dismissed as "invoking Reagan and Bush," and I use the term "Foxbots" because every time I call them "Fox News reporters," I get a lecture on the difference between "reporters" and "correspondents." After the umpteenth lecture, I have settled on the term "Foxbots," as I much prefer whining about name calling versus lectures over semantics.

Tune in to August for the Foxbots GOP debate where you can witness the real definition of "invoking Reagan and Bush."

I love the fans of central planning. They can never take responsibility or invoke the Powell doctrine of "you break it, you own it."
Oh, goody! Let's do invoke the Powell Doctrine. - ROFL - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The Powell Doctrine is that thing that all the Cons like to quote until there's a discussion about the Bush 43 administration, the decision to invade Iraq, and the wreckage that was the American economy circa 2008 where the Cons "broke it and owned it." The Bush 43 administration's policy at the time was to cast aside the entire doctrine and violate every single one of its tenets.

And just who was the Secretary of State during much of this travesty of bumbling stupidity? Why, it was Colin Powell, the man, himself.... until he too was cast aside.

Oh, irony! Disturbing irony! :)

Today we turn to face the challenge of our own hemisphere, our own country, our own economic fortunes. In a few
moments, I will sign three agreements that will complete our negotiations with Mexico and Canada to create a North American Free Trade Agreement. In the coming months I will submit this pack to Congress for approval. It will be a hard fight, and I expect to be
there with all of you every step of the way....

...I believe that NAFTA will create a million jobs in the first five years of its impact. And I believe that that is many more jobs than will be lost, as inevitably some will be as always happens when you open up the mix to a new range of competition. -- President Clinton
___________________
The NAFTA passed by G.H.W. Bush's administration was NOT near the damage done by the Clinton's expansion of free trade. I watched all the industry in my area close one by one due to Asian imports from China, Pakistan, India, and Taiwan.

Now, interesting to note this: Under President Clinton, the United States also worked with the International Labor Organization to help developing countries adopt measures to ensure safe workplaces and basic workers' rights, and it financed programs to reduce child labor in a number of developing countries....

,,,The United States sometimes departs from its general policy of promoting free trade for political purposes, restricting imports to countries that are thought to violate human rights, support terrorism, tolerate narcotics trafficking, or pose a threat to international peace. Among the countries that have been subject to such trade restrictions are Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria. But in 2000, the United States repealed a 1974 law that had required Congress to vote annually whether to extend "normal trade relations" to China. The step, which removed a major source of friction in U.S.-China relations, marked a milestone in China's quest for membership in the World Trade Organization.
