My Lab Mix is seriously ill today because I overdosed him on arthritis med

Posted: May 8, 2011

I must have been distracted when the vet told me I had to get my dog blood tests every 6 months if he stayed on his arthritis meds. I thought he had poisoned himself eating something out in the yard, but the vet thinks it's the medicine. I was supposed to give him half a pill and for the past several days I've been giving him a whole pill, because I thought he needed it. It can cause stomach ulcers, which in his case are causing acute vomiting and diarrhea. Earlier today I saw way too much blood coming out of him and called in a neighbor who is a vet, although not his vet. He's on medicine now and we're hoping he makes it through the night. I feel so stupid!

Thinking of you and your lab - BMC

I have 2 labs myself and am sending good thoughts to you and your pet. I hope he does well and your night goes smoothly. Give us an update please!

Thanks so much to both of you! - Linda Andrews

He's hanging in there. I appreciate the good wishes. He's special to me, of course. I needed some sympathy and support to get through this tonight. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Hoping all turns out well - - LK

Oh, Linda, I'm so sorry to hear this! My thoughts are with you. I have a lab myself that I love dearly, so I feel your pain. You were trying to do your best for him. Here's hoping that all will be well for you and your dog.

Thanks! He's awfully weak, but holding down the Immodium - Linda Andrews

Tomorrow I'm supposed to get several more medications for him to coat his stomach, etc. She said if he has trouble breathing or seems to be in pain, it may be bleeding into his lungs, and grab him and get him to the Emergency Pet Clinic. She was nice enough to tell me to call her, even in the middle of the night. I think I'm going to see if I can get him settled down for the night. What a Dunce I feel like. I had no idea, and I should know better than to give him too much medication. I just thought he was bigger than he is. Thanks for your good thoughts!

So Sorry - Christine

I will say a prayer tonight for your dog, and also for you. I know how you must feel and how it hurts to see them sick. Please let us know he is doing.

Thanks, Christine! - Linda Andrews

Keep us informed. We're all pulling for your baby.

When my vet hands me the bill, he also hands me a typed instruction list with all the info he performed during the visit and if he recommends a med, it's all there in black-and-white (don't know how he does it so fast 'cause it's ready when I am leaving), but I always attach it to the calendar so it's right there for reference.

It has been a rough day, but I'm still optimistic - Linda Andrews

When I told the vet that I just couldn't believe I almost killed my dog, she looked very serious and said, "We haven't saved him yet." He made it through the night with no problems at all. Then when I tried to get his medications down him, he let me know that wasn't going to happen. I never knew a lab could spit that far. We found little pills everywhere! Then when we did get them down him, they didn't stay. A few minutes ago though, I got him to drink a little water, and he walked into my office to say 'hi' like he normally does. I just don't want to take him to the hospital and have to leave him. I'm being very stubborn about it and my son is disgusted with me. Maybe tomorrow if he isn't able to eat something by then. Thanks for pulling for Barron AKA Bear-Bear.

Barron - Christine

I am glad he made it through the night, but please be careful, and don't hesitate to take him in for care if he isn't getting adequate nutrition and fluids. If he becomes severely dehydrated he will need fluids immediately. That's what almost took our Tiny's life. Prayers are going up for you both.

Are you giving him Metacam? - (That stuff should be recalled!) nm

[ In Reply To ..]

No, this is Deramaxx - Linda Andrews

[ In Reply To ..]
The vet mentioned this morning that once he gets well, we'll start him back on it very slowly, maybe not a half, maybe less, and my first reaction was, not ever again! However, it wasn't the medicine. It was me. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid Me! :(

Don't be too hard on yourself. Your vet should have - been clearer on the dosing instructions. nm

Have you tried glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate? - cindy

[ In Reply To ..]
I give that to my dog along with Mobic and it really helps him a lot. Before he started the anti-inflammatories, he just took the glucosamine and that helped greatly. It is a supplement and helps your cartilage and is even proven by the FDA to help arthritis in humans. It does not have the side effects like the anti-inflammatories. You dog could also just be sensative to the anti-inflammatories and maybe not the best thing for him to take. Hope all turns out well for you!
Thanks! I'll check into that. - Linda Andrews

Sounds like something to check into. Baron is doing really well after we took care of the dehydration. I had to wrestle for 30 minutes last night to get his antibiotic down him, but I finally won! His vet (who lives 2 doors down from me) made a house visit this morning to help me cut off the bandage/catheter, and said he can go back on his regular food now. In my mind I am pronouncing him well, with fingers crossed of course.

What is wrong with metacam, it is the same thing as Mobic - cindy

[ In Reply To ..]
Mobic is used for arthritis in humans all the time and as long as you give it as directed, I have never had or heard of a problem with it.

Just got back from the Vets. IV Fluids, Shot for Nausea - Linda Andrews

[ In Reply To ..]
Baron is walking around the house. The Vet gave him a can of dog food after the IV fluids and shot for nausea. He gulped it down and it stayed down. I'm so happy! The blood tests will be back this afternoon. She wanted to make sure that nothing else was going on, poisoning, or whatever. Thanks everyone for being my support system through this! I think he's going to be fine.

Wonderful News! - Christine

I just read your post, and I am so happy for you! Hope he continues to do well. Thanks for posting about his improvement!

Thanks! In the past I've followed the progress of Tiny and Abby and others - Linda Andrews

[ In Reply To ..]
I like to check in here whenever I can and see if there are any updates on some of the animals. Baron is continuing to make progress, although he knows how to eat a whole can of bland food the vet gave us without ingesting even one of the tiny pills I planted in there. Any ideas on that? Thanks!
How about putting the pill into people food? - Sunshine State MT
[ In Reply To ..]
Goodness, my heart sunk when I read your post Linda. I'm glad to hear that Bear-Bear is somewhat better. Please, please, don't blame yourself for it, focus on getting him well.

My 2 MinPins and 1 Chihuaha mix can smell those darn pills in any dog food I give them. My vet suggested I put it in people food, such as a meatball, even those frozen ones, to at least get them to take the pills.

I had 1 dog who had seizures and was on phenobarb, so I know the "pill thing" can be a problem sometimes.

Please keep us posted!
He got some of the pills, but I think I'll try it with some egg - Linda Andrews
[ In Reply To ..]
He loves 'eggy treat' and if I wrap it up just right, or maybe crumble it, it could work. He's got to have that antibiotic and the other one that coats his stomach, and the one with iron. That's a lot of pills to try to get down a large dog who doesn't want them. I'll try people food. Thanks!
my dog takes pills every day and he takes them great with people food - cindy
[ In Reply To ..]
His favorite thing is bread and bananas. I usually clump the pills up in a piece of bread and have another piece ready to give him right away, so he will gulp the first piece down quickly and swallow the pills. He is also a lab.

I used to have another lab who passed a year ago and Dusty was much pickier about what he ate. Another great thing to hide pills is liverwurst. It is very pliable like clay and wraps around the pills just perfect. I again, use the trick of having the piece with the pills and a 'follow up' piece to get him to swallow the first piece really quick.

Good luck and it sounds like he is going to be okay. Don't be too hard on yourself, you are only human and only wanted to help him. Look at it as a learning experience. Something that you will never repeat again.
You can bet on that. I sure won't overdose him again! - Linda Andrews
[ In Reply To ..]
It made me think seriously about the medications I take. People really need to be more careful with dosages, as any MT should already know, [beating myself on the head again].

Fantastic! Still pulling for Barron. - Backwards Typist

Minor Question - Finger ArthritisDec 19, 2016
In the grand scheme of things this is a very paltry question, but it's new to me, so would like to hear about any tips or fixes. I'm in my 60s but have never had arthritis, no pains anywhere, even with doing MT for 30 years. I do have the Heberden's nodes on a couple fingers, but again, no pain associated with them.  But one night 2 weeks ago, I got off work and realized my left ring finger was swollen and stiff at the PIP joint. My wedding ring, which I've always been a ...

For Those Of You With Various Health Issues, Including Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, EtcNov 01, 2013
As an older MT, I started suffering from "aches and pains" as well as some other health issues.  I had been taking 8-12 Tylenol a day and didn't like that idea, because of potential liver damage.  My doctor subsequently put me on tramadol because of the pain issues and I had been taking 1-2 of those a day. I had been talking to a couple of friends of mine who knew of my health issues and they suggested that I try a relatively new nutritional supplement.  I decided to give it ...

A while back I posted a message that the oil commodity prices were going up and the last time oil was about $90, gas went to over $4.00.  Do you think there is less oil out there? DHS Did Something Right Today.Mar 03, 2015
Supposedly, DHS shut down 20 of these birth tourist homes, all in California. It costs up to $50K for the Chinese mothers-to-be to come and stay here, having their babies in a regular hospital, and then go home. The Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution grants automatic citizenship to everyone born in the United States. It was intended to ensure that freed slaves would be able to claim citizenship they rightly deserved. Today, however, some creative "birth tourists" are ta ...
