I got a cat today

Posted: Jan 21, 2016

Believe it or not, I got a wonderful cat at a shelter today! He is a gorgeous black cat, looks like a little panther, and is incredibly affectionate and good natured. He had been there quite a while because the shelter people said they have such a hard time placing black cats! He is a love (and my third black cat), and I am so glad that a friend of mine suggested I take a black cat! So, no Savannah cat, no pit, no Rottie, just a wonderful and loving black cat! He is a very peaceful creature and I am grateful to have him. I know I made the right choice.;

Way to go! I'm delighted for you and even more for him. :) - Heloise

Sounds like you picked a winner! We've had - sm

very good luck with shelter pets. Right now we have a lovely tuxedo cat and an incredibly cute Jack Russell/dachshund mix. Both are very loving and well behaved. I never thought about black cats having trouble getting adopted. Maybe I'll look for a black one when we adopt our next cat.

I think he's a winner - Annie

He purrs and snuggles. I have a friend who works with the program that spays and neuters ferals and she knows a lot about cats. She is the one who told me that black cats have such a low placement rate because of all of the myths about "black cats are bad luck," etc. The woman at the shelter said that it is true, they have more difficulty finding homes for black cats than any other kind. I am so grateful for the no kill shelters. If I could have done it, I would have taken every cat there! I know, I'm a crazy cat lady.

Wishing you - xx

many happy, healthy years with your new furbaby. I'm sure he knows he won the shelter-kitty lottery and got a wonderful forever home.

I have a little black one with gold eyes. She is a cross between a Siamese and a domestic cat, so she TALKS A LOT. I have to talk to her quite a bit or she gets offended. Sometimes I don't know what to say, so I just talk in make believe Chinese. I say something, then she says something. LOL. This can go on for a while. The older she gets the more affectionate she gets. If she can't find me, she starts to cry.

Yep, Indochinese alley cats are very different from Western European alley cats. sm - Heloise

No one told the Indochinese ones about that aloof, independent cat who can take people or leave them thing. They are very attached to their people and really pine away if left alone too much.

I've always thought it must have a lot to do with the small wild cat breeds that got mixed into the domestic cat gene pool in different areas. Those native to Indochina are much easier to domesticate than those of Europe, where even 2nd generation crosses with domestic felines can be impossible to tame at all. Although the small native European wild cat is now restricted to just a few very remote areas, there must have been a fair amount of mixing when Europe was less populated, and the biggest contribution to our own alley cat population is still European alley cats.

Yours sounds charming! I have a friend who has had Siamese cats all her life, and they really are talkers. My cat doesn't talk so much, but he purrs constantly. He seems to be very happy. I sure am!

wonderful!!! - enjoy your fur baby!!

Have you picked a name for him...SM - Old Anon

[ In Reply To ..]
yet or are you keeping the name he had while living in the shelter?

Yes, I have named him - Annie

Marty. He just looks like a Marty to me. My friend, who is the cat expert, came to see him last night and says he is so sleek he looks like he could have some Bombay in him. Not sure of that, as he was found running loose and picked up by Animal Control. But he is very happy, even sleeps on my bed!

Aww. What a happy ending for - xx

Marty and his new person.

BTW, Marty is an excellent name for a cat.

I have 4 cats and they all picked me - Cat lady

Two tuxedo male siblings, 1 gray tabby and Miss Precious, a white with black, gold, rust, brown coloring and I love them dearly. Thanks for giving a shelter animal a home, firmly believe in getting animals there. Sweet.

Cat lady - I love shelters, too

Do you know about Best Friends Animal Shelter? They are out in Utah and take in not only cats and dogs but also larger animals. They were the group that rehabilitated Michael Vick's pit bulls. (All but one was able to be rehabbed.) Anyway, they do an amazing job. I am on their mailing list and try to send them a donation when I can. (It isn't much on an MT's earnings, but I try to do what I can.) Here is their website:

Adopted cats - Me too

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know if my cat would be considered a shelter cat, she's a Siamese mix breed (long hair) who showed up at my doorstep and moved in. I later learned that her owner had died and she was left homeless to roam the neighborhood. I was not much of a cat person at the time, but she won me over with her sweet disposition and it's the first time I had ever known a talkative cat! Since then, I volunteer at the local animal shelter. The kittens always find homes first; it's a little more difficult with the adults. OP, I am so glad you are giving this guy a chance and a forever home, enjoy the companionship.

Adopting Marty was the best thing I have done in years. He is such a good companion! And he seems to have such gratitude--he licks my face several times a day. I knew dogs did that, but I have never had a cat who licked like that before. Several of my (human) friends have come to meet him and he gets along well with everyone. Good for you for volunteering at the shelter!

DHS Did Something Right Today.Mar 03, 2015
Supposedly, DHS shut down 20 of these birth tourist homes, all in California. It costs up to $50K for the Chinese mothers-to-be to come and stay here, having their babies in a regular hospital, and then go home. The Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution grants automatic citizenship to everyone born in the United States. It was intended to ensure that freed slaves would be able to claim citizenship they rightly deserved. Today, however, some creative "birth tourists" are ta ...

I'm surprised no one on this board commented on it yet. I watched it and he seems pretty pi$$ed. I just hope he really means what he said this time. As he said, it is his responsibility. Maybe now he will stop blaming the former administration and focus on being a president instead of a puppet. The only problem I see is that talk is cheap. Implementation of what his plans are for the terrorist problem has yet to be seen. I did miss the press conference between Homeland Security ...

So first I got a fruit basket delivered today from one of my accounts.  Very nice.  Then I got my mail and there was a X-mas card from our next door neighbor. They are retired, in their 80s, and live in Florida for the winter.  Since we live in an area that has plenty of snow, we (usually me) shovel or snowblow their sidewalk whenever needed.  In the past they have always sent a X-mas card with a check for my husband for doing the snowblowing, I think usually about $50.  ...
