Fashion info

Posted: Aug 11, 2016

I need a nice dress (not too sexy, not too plain) to wear to a wedding of importance in the fall, and I am plus size, 1X.  all I see out there are what look like prom dresses.  I am looking at a floral dress, but wonder if that will enhance my size?  I saw on at Penneys and it had all colors to is, and DH said it looked too springy.  Don't have much money, I am an MT.  Thanks in advance.  :)

Price-wise, give Goodwill a try. I have found nice clothes, some still with original tags, for decent prices.

As for the floral dress being too springy in the fall, perhaps it could be toned down a bit with a fall-hued or dark shawl/jacket/sweater and accessories.

You can wear something a little fancier if you are mother of the bride or groom, but sm - sm

other than that, I'm not able to be much help. This kind of thing is why I still use my sewing machine, and my favored style is very plain outfits to show off my antique/vintage jewelry collection. (Of course, that only helps if you inherited over a hundred years of that stuff from a half-dozen different relatives.)

I will second the advice to check out any thrift and secondhand shops in your area, though--you can find some amazing stuff in them here if you hit it right. Big people don't look good in skimpy cuts or flimsy/clingy fabrics, and that's usually what you find these days in less expensive clothes. What you really want is something made out of fabric with some substance, well-tailored and lined so it keeps its shape instead of hugging all the bulges in yours. You can't find that kind of thing in anything but really high-end clothing these days, though. It's either make it yourself or find a charity store all the rich folks dump last year's couture wardrobe off at. And, alas, the rich tend to be thin. :(

Still, give the secondhand/thrift stores a shot. You never know.

I, too, am 1X. I was going on a cruise and needed some nice things. I hit pay dirt at Goodwill, and a church-run thrift shop located in a high-end town where the rich people purchase a new wardrobe every season, every year. Got some really nice stuff there for just a few bucks for each item.

Some people are all for consignment shops, but honestly, they are sometimes more expensive than the lower-end department stores.

Frankly, you can buy a semi-dressy black dress and dress it way up with a pretty bolero or shawl and some well-chosen jewelry.

Great ideas. I also thought about adding a navy blue long sheer wrap or a silky navy blue scarf that is wide over my shoulder with navy blue accessories. I wanted to do black dress because you can do so much with it, but hubs said no. I thought it was completely appropriate since it was fall and late evening outside. Thanks again to all. Now I have to start looking again. :)

Not sure what's wrong with black on a fall evening. Actually, black might be inappropriate in the summer in the daytime. Unless there's something I don't know about some protocol, not sure what hub is thinking.

Is this event on his side of the family or something and he's afraid of being embarrassed by someone who is just wearing basic black? Is everyone else doing glitter and glitz or something?

I don't think a flowery dressy dress in the evening is appropriate.
Now they have gone to having things like black and white weddings, - sm

probably most people wouldn't comment on a wedding guest wearing black, but the color has traditionally been considered inappropriate, probably because it is the traditional color for mourning (not exactly the sentiment you want to convey at a wedding even if you don't approve of the choice of spouse). White is also considered inappropriate because it is usually what the bride wears, and you shouldn't steal her thunder by showing up in "her" color.

As for a flowery dressy dress--it might not suit the season, but a dressy dress is appropriate for an evening wedding. The rule is the later the hour, the more dressy/formal the attire expected, although these days, it's likely only the mother of the bride and groom will opt for floor-length gowns at an evening wedding.

He is just so old fashioned in his thinking, but looking for a black dress anyway. Going to accessorize with lots of silver, as that is one of the wedding colors. Thanks,

How about ordering something from Blair? - Sans de nom

[ In Reply To ..]
I receive their catalog and while I believe mainly "old" people like Blair, sometimes I look online and read reviews by those who have ordered a dress to wear to a wedding and are happy with it. Blair used to be really budget-priced, but now quite a bit more than Wal-Mart. Still, I have gotten things from their clearance catalog and received lots of compliments. Just an idea.

Look at Belk on line. They have beautiful clothes. nm - GaMT

I couldn't believe it, I asked a friend where she got her dress, and she said Amazon! I looked, and they have gorgeous clothes cheap. I ordered a dress, black, I got 2 days free shipping, and it is better than the picture. So if any of you are ever stuck like me, go there. I still can't believe I got my dress at AMAZON!
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.

But, Senate Democrats and the President rejected that measure.  Senator Reid said it is a "non starter," ...
