8 things that require more time, info or effort than owning a gun

Posted: Dec 16, 2012

1. Voting.  Most states require advance registration, 30 days in some, before election day.  With a few exceptions, in most states guns can go home with you on the day of purchase.  Private sale purchases required no ID, whereas some states require voter ID.

2. Antihistamines.  The monthly allowable amount of pseudoephedrine for individual purchase has war-on-drugs restrictions in place, as it is a component for manufacturing methamphetamine.   It’s kept under lock and key on retail displays.   Federal and most state laws do not limit the number of firearms allowed in a single transaction.

3. Pooch restaurant patronage. Leave your dog at home or in the car when entering a restaurant, but feel free to pack the Glock in 49 out of 50 states.

4. Driving a car.  Driving requires a SS#, vision and written/performance competency testing.  Not so with guns.  ATF Application for purchase shows SS# is optional.  Gun safety and performance proficiency , not even on the radar screen.

5. Drinking a beer.  Shotguns and rifles, and in AZ private-sale handguns, are available to 18-year-olds, but they have to wait another 3 years to drink a beer.

6. Getting a cell-phone contract.  SS# required before getting wireless phone services.  Guns?  No way.

7. Getting a credit card.  Ditto #6.

8. Hunting or fishing license.  Delinquent child-support payment enforcement led to requiring SS#s on hunting and fishing licenses first-time purchases.

LOL. Thanks for adding to the list. Reform advocates can use - all the "ammo" they can get. nm

The guns used were stolen. - LeonaG

I've read that the mother enjoyed shooting as a hobby and belonged to a range. Her son was too young to own pistols (at least). The fact that he took the handguns out of the house and she was dead means that they were stolen, as I'm reasonably certain she would not have allowed him to take those guns anywhere.

In that regard, this is not a "gun control" issue.

This is much like when teenagers steal the family car (take it without permission) and kill somebody, or themselves, with it.

WHAT? OMG. - Enjoyed shooting at a gallery?

How bucolic.  Positively Norman Rockwell.  Here.  Take a long, hard look at the warm and fuzzy MILITARY grade .223 Bushmaster he was able to steal from his mom, after unloading 4 bullets in her head while she slept.  He wasn't as kind to the kids, some of whom got hit 10 or 11 times, while they were wide awake.

Keep in mind mom took her kids to the range with her and taught Adam how to shoot. Somewhere along the line, he also learned precisely which ammo was needed for the specific guns he had access to and chose to remove from the home, how to load them and how to exact MAXIMIZE damage when mobilizing their use.  Of no small consequence is that his erratic behavior was longstanding, something that his mom MUST have known, yet those guns were not secure ENOUGH to prevent him from laying his hands on them.  This is not just a case of lax gun control laws.  It is also an issue about gun culture mindsets that cannot understand what's wrong with this picture.

Speaking of gun control, it was reported he had multiple 30-round magazines and "hundreds" of bullets. Where do you suppose he got those?  If not from mom, then he either ordered them online, got them from private sale or WHATEVER, along with his bulletproof vest.  There are so many political and social issues here, it's hard to know where to start, but rest assured that gun control is at the top of that list, right alongside the abomination that is our national mental healthcare system.

Last time I checked, obtaining guns by theft is not legal acquisition, so thanks for blowing a hole in that particular conservative talking points refrain.  Other than that, it is utterly absurd to suggest that the crime somehow renders the gun control issue moot.

Here are some answers for you. - LeonaG

Target shooters often have hundreds of rounds of ammunition because they will fire many bullets during several hours of target practice, and it's more convenient to buy once a week or so rather than every single day. You do know that target shooting is an Olympic sport, right? Do you think people get good at it by shooting 10-15 rounds a week? I'm not the shooter I once was, as I don't have the time, but it's easy for me to fire 50 rounds or more during a session. When I used to do that several times a week, guess what? I had hundreds of rounds in the house.

For all practical purposes, guns cannot be ordered online by anyone (especially the underage), except to then be sent to a licensed dealer, who agrees to accept them on your behalf, and then performs the necessary ATF background check when you come and pick them up.

Historic/antique weapons can, I believe, be sent directly to the legal buyer; I will admit I'm not up on this portion of gun law. However, antique/historic guns are very rarely used in homicides.

Bullets can be purchased online but would not be sold and shipped to anyone who was using a credit or debit card belonging to someone underage. However, see above; his mother was apparently a shooting enthusiast, so it is not at all strange that she would have had a lot of ammunition in the house.

Worrying about large-capacity magazines is meaningless. What's allowed varies state to state. Again, target shooters like to use large-capacity magazines because they don't have to reload them so often.

I can change out the empty magazine and insert a new one into my semi-auto handgun extremely quickly, in about a second or so. Since my gun is not a full-auto (and the Bushmaster was not a full-auto), all a person needs to do to fire a LOT of bullets is load up a number of smaller magazines and carry them, since it is so quick to change them out.

There is nothing special or especially deadly about the rifle the young man had, except that it was a Scary Black Rifle that was, visually, "military style."

It wouldn't be less deadly if it were painted pink, and it was not MORE deadly for being a "civilian version" of a military rifle, since it most emphatically did NOT have "military capabilities," whatever those are. I assume that means the ability to fire in fully-automatic mode.

As for several of your other phrases, such as "gun culture mindsets," you do realize that you're talking about 80 million people, most of whom are sane, law-abiding citizens. Right? You do realize that? Quit with the stereotypes and fear-mongering, please.

The point I was making was indeed that he did not obtain the guns legally. Therefore, a gun control discussion IS meaningless - unless you're trying to build a reason that his mother shouldn't have been allowed to have the guns she did. Good luck with that. You cannot argue a case if you don't know much about the topic and aren't willing to learn.

I had to go through gyrations before my pharmacy would refill my low-dose, garden-variety antidepressant seven days before it was due. It's not that hard to put policies and procedures, and tracking, in place.
What additional policies and procedures? - LeonaG

There are laws in place. Criminals break them. No surprise there to any of us, I'm sure.

The background check that is required does catch and stop people that are not allowed to buy guns. It is not a perfect system; I believe there are flaws related to the agencies who are supposed to report to the crime database and don't have complete information to report, or don't report it timely, and thus some people slip through the cracks. I cannot point to any online data for this, however.

It is well known that people with criminal intent usually buy guns through the black market or steal them. They do not normally purchase them from private buyers or at gun shows or gun shops. I feel it is quite possible that altering the purchase procedures could cost a whole lot of money and not affect the firearm homicide rate, or appreciably keep firearms out of the hands of criminals.

I am unsure how tracking ownership of guns would make lower the firearm homicide rate. Knowing who owns a gun doesn't stop that gun from being used to kill someone, although I suppose it may make a difference in the solve rate. Perhaps there is another angle to this I'm not seeing?

If there is something I am overlooking, here, I'd be happy to discuss it.

The Idea Is To Require People Who Have Cadillac CoveragesSep 14, 2013
One of the things I'm not crazy about in this interim period before costs are brought more in line is Obamacare's throwing more responsibility on us for shopping for prices. People who belong to unions will not get a break on this--i.e., they won't still be able to just go to any hospital or doctor, no matter how overpriced, and have it all covered by insurance that costs no more than that most people have.  Right now, people are going to their $600/hour cardiac or other sp ...
