Anyone here who has lost weight or maintaining

Posted: Mar 5, 2015

Husband does the protein shakes, not for weight loss or to maintain but because he has diabetes and tries to put things in his diet he thinks are good for him. Now, I saw on TV the other day about how protein shakes can either help you lose weight or maintain weight. I am so in need of losing some weight. Have others here tried? ;

Probably depends - sm

It all just depends on how many calories you take in daily, as to if you will lose weight. My husband drinks the high calorie protein shakes because he lifts weights and no, you wouldn't be able to lose weight with that. If you are thinking of substituting a meal with a lower calorie shake, then yes, you could lose weight, but it would depend on how long you could keep that habit up.

Not shakes specifically for me, but high protein - Ayn

I'm afraid you will get as many differing responses as you get people answering you -- Different things work for different people and there are a zillion different views and opinions on what is healthy vs what isn't, what causes weight gain vs what doesn't, what helps lose weight vs what doesn't.

Some will say low calories are the way to go, some will say low fat, some will say low carbs, others will have something else.

What works for me for losing weight and maintaining is a low-carb, high-protein diet. SO, yes, for me the protein shakes are good -- IF they are low in carbs/sugars. Some are, some are not. I typically don't do the shakes much though because I find that the liquid meal just doesn't do it for me - I do not feel full and I want something to chew or it just doesn't feel like eating. It's not fulfilling/satisfying if that makes sense. About the only time I use the protein shakes is for a snack/boost in the afternoons or after a workout.

My suggestion, though, if you want to lose weight & maintain (not to mention the many other health benefits of improving BP, lowering cholesterol, controlling blood sugar, more energy, better sleep, healthier skin/hair, etc) is a high-protein, low-carb diet and exercise/activity - even just 30 minutes of walking a day.

A very good book that I suggest to anyone who asks is Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It by Gary Taubes.

Good luck on your path to healthy!

Ayn, thanks for the information. Hubby also stated - waht you did about

you want to have the protein shakes that are low (or have none) in sugar. Think I mentioned above he does the shakes in the morning because of his diabetes, not weight control, etc. He has remained the same weight though for years, maybe a pound here, drop a pound, always being able to wear same sized clothes, not overweight at all. Who knows, he might do for his health and the same time being able to maintain because sure heard the other day about protein shakes helping the weight issue.

I didn't do anything special except to start walking at least a mile a day (more as I gained strength and stamina). I ate oatmeal for breakfast, fruit for mid-morning snack, half a sandwich for lunch which was usually avocado and tomato, but even sometimes had peanut butter (no jelly - has sugar), another fruit for mid afternoon snack. For dinners, I would just have steamed veggies of some sort with perhaps a small piece of chicken or fish. In addition, I did some basic calisthenics on the living room floor while watching TV, with some light weightlifting on the side. I lost 60 lbs doing it old-fashioned and simple way without paying for books or "diet plans" or shakes or anything else. It wasn't quick, took about 6-8 months, just a few lbs a week, but it was steady.

It's really all about what you are eating, portion size, and moving, really moving and working up a sweat. Anything else is liable to have you cramming afterward and gaining the weight back.

If you want to really jump-start your metabolism, ditch all the "white" stuff: sugar, processed flour, pasta, bread, etc. After you've started losing and dropped, say, 20 lbs or more, you can add just a little of that back in, very carefully and with good portion sizes. However, you may find you really don't want to. I remember having a Whopper, Jr. several months after not having anything really greasy like that. Thought I was going to be sick, and I could taste the grease coating in my mouth for hours, even after brushing my teeth. It was gross.

You can do it. It just takes the determination and decision that you really have to make a complete lifestyle change. That's how to keep it off afterward.

Good luck!

Hi, everyone!   I need to lose weight and nothing I have done has worked, so I different approach.  I don't want to do fake food like medifast or Nutrisystem, etc. - so I'm wondering about WW?  I hate those commercials, but I can overlook them if the program works.  Has anyone done WW and if so, what are the pros and cons of Meetings vs Online?   Since I already work at home and live alone, I'm thinking I should give myself a reason to get out at ...

Weight IssuesMar 25, 2012
Okay, I have always been a medium built girl, somewhat petite at 5'3 and always carried my weight well. Two years ago I quit smoking and packed on 20 lbs. I got busy working out and counting calories, and tried to change my eating habits. Okay, it was gradual, but I lost 10 lbs. Over the course of some months it continued to decline gradually. But this Winter around the holidays I pigged out. Then I went through a transition where I lost my job, quit cooking and eating healthy and jus ...

I am hoping some of you out there can help.  I am 5'4" and weigh 108 pounds.  I would like to gain 10 or 12 pounds so I look healthier.  Some people look at me like I either have a drug problem or I am bulemic, and that is SO not the case.  It is to the point I am getting very self-conscious about it and even getting to the point that I don't feel comfortable with my husband seeing me.  The problem is that I do not have an appetite a lot of ...

Are You Happy With Your Weight?Apr 18, 2013
Just wondering if any woman is ever truly "happy" with her body?  I have always had weight struggles and had gotten very heavy and I lost it all about five years ago.  I was happy, at first, but then it went away.  I am not underweight and am actually at the high end of "normal" weight, but I just cannot be happy about how I look.  I decided I needed to lose 10 more pounds for this summer and worked hard and lost it, but I still look in the mirror and I think I see myself a l ...

Menopause And Weight GainFeb 13, 2011
I found out about a year ago that I'm in full-blown menopause.  I have all the characteristic issues that go along with it.  All of my life I've had to watch what I eat and try to exercise regularly (but that isn't going nearly as well as it should be right now).  Some days I just have no motivation whatsoever.  My tighter and tighter fitting clothes should be motivation enough, but apparently it isn't.  I'm so tired of this weight gain and feeli ...

Weight Loss ShakesMay 13, 2015
