I have a family member who is former career military who pointed out something that was a bit odd. He said it was highly unusual that Berghdahl's unit/platoon members would go on Fox TV like that and trash Berghdahl just days after he came home and before a trial. This is usually an internal affairs matter and people are discouraged from talking to the press until the investigation is completed.

He said he was always trained to keep his mouth shut and follow orders, no one is interested in opinion. He said he was discouraged from ever giving his opinion about others in the military, particularly to the press or political organizations, because it erodes comradery in general, fails to give perception of a united front, and gives false perception that the military rewards snitches.

He says if you choose to be in the military, you did not sign up to be a soldier to get attention, fame or money (except maybe for college). You choose to be a soldier to protect and defend your country, for honor's sake or to find purpose for your life. He said especially if still in the service, you talk to no one. (To be fair, he says the same thing about Navy Seals talking about their missions even when out of the service, this make him really mad:)

But he thinks it's especially odd they'd be allowed/encouraged to trash him like that on Fox before a trial instead of clamping down and letting internal affairs handle it. Instead, it was oddly encouraged for them to talk to the press ASAP. In fact, his words, he said he wouldn't be surprised at all if we eventually found out the kid was bullied by the majority of the unit who disagreed with him politically, and who believed all Muslims were terrorists. Perhaps in his weak, tired, frightened mind, surrender to the enemy seemed the lesser or 2 evils.

He also said if you've watched or read "Lone Survivor", a true story, that's accurate. There are actually rural towns in Afghanistan which fought off Al-Quaeda themselves to defend the "Lone Survivor" soldier because the old Muslim town rule was never to allow one man to be attacked by many, regardless of which side they're on. Many against one is never a fair fight, they believe.

Just something to think about.

PS - He wanted me to add and make sure it's clear it is NEVER okay to go AWOL, it puts your unit at risk and others in danger. His point above is that there's a reason the military allowed 6 of his platoon members get on Fox News and trash him like that the day he arrived home and before an investigation. It's rare and means the military is that desperate to try to cover some aspect before it leaks.

Perhaps we'll never know, but the fact that he only received the one charge of desertion may be a clue. But just like with the federal government itself, we will only know what the military WANTS us to know and nothing more. But if you look closely, you will easily see when they're hiding something, too.
