Op ed piece from New York Magazine

A peek into the National Review cruise a week after the election.  Interesting and telling, in a secret-cam-at-a-donor-dinner kind of way.  It leans left, so proceed accordingly.

Thanks for this great article! - sm

It struck me that if we go off the cliff and/or suffer a major depression, it would be unnecessary, that the Republicans would contribute to it voluntarily and happily, if it made Obama look bad.

They really DO have a problem with racism, as was mentioned in the article. In fact, it seemed the only time they all were happy was when the black guy started the music.

Again, thanks for sharing this wonderful article.

The statement about the aborigines really got me. - grits

It was shocking; made me wonder if the woman being quoted had been drinking (in vino veritas and all that)

Having lived my entire life in conservative communities, - I was far from shocked. So many silly

and regrettable notions. Not long ago someone explained to me sincerely and totally without malice that "Orientals" are "all" such terrible drivers because the shape of their eyes doesn't allow much peripheral vision. :)

These notions go so deep that I suspect very few of us are truly free of assumptions of white supremacy in intelligence, character, enterprise, eye shape, etc. The possibility that "minor" factors like planetary geography, energy, and politics might actually be defining factors in America's ascendancy in the past 150 years and we here the lucky beneficiaries? Come on!
Yeah, shocked was a poor word choice - grits

I'd naïvely forgotten how people around here, especially the older ones, tend to assume that everyone who looks like them thinks like them.
Actually, I was pretty sure "shocked" was not a normal state - for you, nor naive for that matter. :)

Thanks, Grits. This was a hoot. Revealing, yes, but these are - the Reagan-era Old Guard. The old GOP didn't

[ In Reply To ..]
die, but its Old Guard are definitely fading away--still dangerous but well on their way to irrelevance as they're replaced by a less reactionary and more inclusive conservative party, whatever that calls itself. It'll be interesting to see if its white supremacists, unwilling to desegregate, manage to hold the GOP label as a third, ultraconservative party or pass it on for others to build another era of greatness.

Saw This In A Magazine...smFeb 25, 2013
A little 5-year-old boy came home from kindergarten one day and asked his parents to buy him an IPad.  His parents told him that he was too young for an IPad, that it was too expensive, and why did he need to bring an IPad to school.  The boy told them that Billy had one and asked why he couldn't have one.  Again, they asked the boy what he would do with an IPad in kindergarten, and he told them he would cover his eye with it when they played pirates. ...

An Article From A German MagazineDec 03, 2009
Never before has a speech by President Barack Obama felt as false as his Tuesday address announcing America's new strategy for Afghanistan. It seemed like a campaign speech combined with Bush rhetoric -- and left both dreamers and realists feeling distraught.   Just minutes before the president took the stage inside Eisenhower Hall, the gathered cadets were asked to respond "enthusiastically" to the speech. But it didn't help: The soldiers' reception was cool.   One ...

titled "We were once as depraved as ISIS."  I will paraphrase: In 1569 Protestant English troops massacred every Irish Catholic they found, beheaded the corpses and laid the heads in a path to the British commander's tent.  Later, the Earl of Essex hunted down and butchered 400 women and children, etc., etc.  Queen Elizabeth I approved.  Different religious factions have been slaughtering one another for centuries and guess what - Obama wasn't there!   And in c ...

According To Smart Money Magazine, Here Is What Corporations Are DoingMar 12, 2011
"Yes, companies have boosted profits—to near-record levels—by slashing costs." That's also what I have been seeing. The companies are making more money than ever before, taking advantage of those tax breaks, but they are pleasing stockholders by cutting costs (and people) in order to do it. That's very good business for them, but not so much for Americans who need to work. This is not a political comment, because it has been happening under both administrations.   ...

Good article on Howard Buffet, Warren's son.  Just a paragraph or two here, but I went to his foundation and read some of the articles posted in thumbnails, speeches, etc. Eye-opening to say the least. Because of his large farm, he not only feeds the hungry, but teaches them farming, to almost the whole world with the exception of a few countries. So my point is that not all "rich" people are greedy CEOs.  In the land of plenty, more than 50 million Americans, including one ...

New York City Mayor Gets ItDec 03, 2014
In his address to the issue he referred to the subject of police and the black population by describing how he has to warn his own son, that while the police are to be respected and they are thankful for them, but specifically as a black youth, he has to be extra careful, moreso than a white teen.  This guy is way beyond Gov Nixon's level, but I suppose the Mayor of New York City should be.   Then he repeated the speech in Spanish.  Good for him.  I hope they keep it u ...

New York Just Passed The Nation's Toughest Gun Control Law.Jan 15, 2013
From NJ.com: " Jumping out ahead of Washington, New York state enacted the nation's toughest gun restrictions today and the first since the Connecticut school massacre, including an expanded assault-weapon ban and background checks for buying ammunition. Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the measure into law less than an hour after it won final passage in the Legislature, with supporters hailing it as a model for the nation and gun-rights activists condemning it as a knee-jerk piec ...
