my dog killed my kitten last night

Posted: Sep 11, 2013

the kitten was really a stray that came from my mom's and was living in my garage, but I had been feeding it and it was starting to be a little bit friendly, and it was really cute.  Every time my dog saw it he would chase after it and bark but I never thought he'd really hurt the kitten.  Last night he grabbed it and shook it and broke it's neck.  I picked the poor thing up and held it while it died and told it I was so sorry.  I'm so mad at my dog and I know he doesn't understand why.

Oh, that is so sad. I'm sorry. :( - nm

You sound like a very kind person. The dog probably viewed the kitten as some kind of vermin and thought he was protecting his home. He didn't understand that it was a pet. I hope you can find another animal to rescue to help you heal your heart.

So, so sorry - Judy

What a horrible thing to go through. There are no words I can think of to ease your pain, but I'm very sorry. I also believe that your dog likely doesn't understand what he did and he probably thought he was protecting you.

Also sorry but do not be mad at your dog! - just saying

[ In Reply To ..]
He is a dog not a person! Not trying to make you feel worse, but dogs chase cats and the shaking you saw could have been anything from their version of play to deliberately trying to kill it.

MOST dogs will chase anything that runs - so if you have an opportunity to have another cat, never trust your dog with it.

There are plenty of dogs who are best friends with cats but very few you can be sure would never chase.

I am so sorry for your kitten, but - I have to agree.....

[ In Reply To ..]
I know you feel terrible, but it is not the dog's fault. He did what he knew to do. Some dogs do get along with cats, but not all. I know my dog would kill a cat in a heartbeat and I would never risk it. I get upset because outdoor cats come in my yard all the time (fenced in) and if my dog gets one, she's going to kill it. She kills rabbits and squirrels like it is her job. I hate it and I always to check to see if there are any out there before I let my dog out to prevent it as best I can.

what a horrible experience - also so sorry n.m.

you would want to correct that behavior if you ever were to - have kids

[ In Reply To ..]

That's not exactly true - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Do some research on "prey drive". Some dogs have it more than others and it is their hunting INSTINCT and very difficult to control. It has nothing to do with aggression towards people or children. I have a dog with a very high prey drive and she would never harm a human and in fact will cower down to humans if she is afraid.

The greater a dog's prey drive, the greater the - liability & potential disaster of owning it.

Yes, the agency that writes my homeowner's insurance now requires that you pay a special rider if you own a German Shepherd, a Rottweiler, a Doberman, a chow-chow or a pit bull. Of course, it makes me mad, but I can understand how it came into being. (Pits are the number 1 dog for biting and dog fatalities and Rotties are number 2.)
i agree. lawsuit waiting to happen - why would you want such a terrible animal

Bet you're the nasty cat lover above that wants to see dogs tortured and killed.

Not exactly true - Old Pro

[ In Reply To ..]
What you say is exactly right. All dogs at some point descended from wolves. Some dogs (mostly hunting dogs and guard dogs) have a stronger prey drive than other dogs. I have to be very mindful with a Doberman and Rottweiler that their instinct is to protect me. They have never been attack-trained and are, in fact, very kind and loving. But if someone were to grab at me, even in play, they would growl, show their teeth, and perhaps even bite (I hope not). I keep them away from cats and when they are out it is in a fenced yard or on a leash with me controlling them. I have a good friend who had a chow-chow for many years. One day her adult son came over and went to give his mom a hug and the chow got in between them and bared its teeth and growled. Again, it was not the chow's fault. Those dogs were bred to guard the temples in China and they have a very strong instinct to guard and protect. I once knew a woman who had a Chihuahua who was one of the meanest dogs I knew. Whenever it would see me, it would go for my ankles and bite. That is just an instinct in some dogs. (And cats, too. I have a friend whose cat is a biter.) I do hope that the OP does not blame herself. Neither she nor the dog did anything wrong. I feel very sorry for her.

just because the dog hasnt harmed a human YET - doesnt mean it wont

[ In Reply To ..]
look up all the stories of fatalities by dogs. Most of them were "good dogs" wouldn't hurt a fly, never showed signs of agression. Tread lightly.

Changing behavior - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I highly doubt that either you or the other poster with the Dangerous Dog title have 1/2 a clue when it comes to normal dog behavior.

Most dogs, LIKE CATS, are hunters. When a cat kills a bird or a mouse, are you going to try to Change that behavior? Or keep your cat away from your kids? Yeah, didn't think so.

Maybe do some research before you make such inane comments.

thanks - OP

He's really a good, sweet dog and loves people. I was starting to feela little better about the situation till people started coming on her talking about how dangerous he is.

I am heartsick about the kitten but I also understand this is his nature. Also, I have 2 other cats and since they were here first, he has never chased them or tried to hurt them.
If he's fine in other situations - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I would say you don't have much to worry about. Your other cats are part of his pack. I would, though, recommend that if you do bring in a new pet -- dog or cat -- that you do a very slow and thorough intro with your dog, and probably keep them separated until your dog clicks in to the fact he has a new pack member.

Chances are, too, that your dog thought the kitten was a threat/danger. He was protecting his pack. Think about it this way -- if you had some homeless guy suddenly living in your house, how would you react? Probably with the same protective instinct your dog displayed. Dogs don't think, Oh this poor guy is sick and doesn't have a home, let's take care of him. They see threat/food/pack.

In any event, ignore the ignorant comments from people who have probably never owned a dog. Go love up your doggie. He loves you. =]
you understand it is his nature? why would you want a dog - with such a sick nature?

My dog accidentally injured my cat - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
At least, it seemed like an accident. She (the dog) had never shown any aggressiveness toward the cat, but she would play with her. One day, she swatted at my kitty and pinned her down on the ground, but didn't make any attempts to bite the cat. The cat of course tried to get away and dislocated and tore all ligaments in her leg. :( Then she somehow made it up a tree after that. Adrenaline, I guess. I climbed the tree and brought her down. The poor thing was so scared. I took her to the vet, and had to have her leg amputated. I felt so bad, but I knew it wasn't really the dog's fault. The dog was just playing.

my dog killed my kitten last night - siberian huskies

[ In Reply To ..]
There are certain dog breeds that do not get along with cats. Period. Dogs have a natural prey drive that you can't change.

I am sorry this happened to you, OP. It is an awful experience. We used to own a cat, but I rehomed him. I have 11 Siberian Huskies, and this dog breed will not tolerate cats. The dogs were there first, and the cat adopted us.

Siberians are the sweetest dogs, and they will lick everybody to death. You can't use them as watch dogs as they love people; however, they do not well with cats. I knew it, and I rehomed the little cat.

Agree, have a husky too, we do have a cat BUT -sm - XXX

[ In Reply To ..]
we keep them apart as we know he would kill the cat if he had the chance. He actually got a hold of the cat once, a comedy of errors happened, cat in the wrong place at the wrong time, gate was down, someone opened door to let dog in...he had that cat in his mouth so fast, luckily I happened to be standing right there, grabbed him and literally pried his mouth open and made him drop the cat before he could do anything. She lost a tiny tuft of fur as her only sign of the grab/bite from him, though probably lost 8 of her 9 lives that day. So glad I was there or she would have been dead. No animal is safe in our backyard if one is dumb enough to burrow under the fence. -----when we got our Corgi a few years ago I very gradually introduced him to the husky as I wanted to make sure he realized this was a dog and not something he is could kill. Worked out well and now they are best buddies.

I'd keep the cat, and get rid of the huskies... - Truth B. Told

it's always been odd that when a dog kills a cat, regardless of the breed of dog, it's always justified by saying, "It's just the nature of dogs."

When a pitbull mauls a child (and this doesn't happen occasionally anymore... it happens every day), all too often the dog is often defended by lovers of the breed. "It can be trained out of them.." they say.

HOWEVER, should someone in the neighborhood acquire a big cat, such as a cheetah or a serval, you can bet that all those pitbull and other notoriously dangerous dogs are going to scream bloody murder. "It will go after our pets or our children!" they'll whine. Some of them even freak out about hybrids such as savannah cats or ocicats.

If one of their powerful, vice-grip-jawed pits kills a cat, it's hardly newsworthy. However, if someone's pet serval killed a pit, it'd be all over the evening news, and the neighbors would likely develop a lynch mob mentality.
PS: Typo! I meant the owners of the dogs would - scream bloody murder. Tho dogs prob. would, too)..

[ In Reply To ..]
exactly. My cat was sleeping in our front yard, 2 pits came up - and nearly tore her apart
[ In Reply To ..]
we are a 3 minute walk away from the school and I wanted the dogs put down. Nope. If a dog will attack a sleeping animal in different territory (read: not it's own property) what makes you think it won't attack children walking home from school. I actually told by animal control it takes a mauling of a human before they can put down a dog. what is wrong with our system? I have dogs and if one of them even attempted to hurt our cats i would have it put down faster than you could say meow.
I agree - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I agree that the OP had fair warning. I also think that saying she tried to stop it but couldn't says a lot about the root of the problem--an inability to control her animal.

All she needed was a crate or leash, or just shutting the dog outside. If she cannot recognize that this is a discipline problem and what to do about it, she has a far bigger problem than a dead kitten.

I'll say something else here, too. If you have graphic, sickening content that you absolutely must "share" with the world, please do not post it in the subject line itself. Keep the subject neutral and indicate that the content may make others ill. Give people a choice rather than forcing your misery upon them.

Words cannot express how sorry I feel for you. Please accept my condolences. As hard as it may be, please do not blame your dog. Dogs, like people, are jealous. Some dogs (depending on the breed) also have a strong prey instinct. I am a Doberman and Rottweiler person, but know that their instinct is to go after cats. It is not your dog's fault, and it is not your fault; it is just the way nature works, as a hard a truth as that is. I am so sorry for the loss of your kitten. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

some of you need - to stop

[ In Reply To ..]
Some of you need to stop to humanize dogs. Dogs are dogs. They hunt, and they kill small animal. One of my Siberians killed a hamster yet she is the most gentle, loving dog ever. Things like this happen, and it does not mean dogs go after children......

The cat we used to have killed a squirrel. Nobody would say anything about that right?

have lived long on the streets before you and your mom rescued it. At least you tried to give it a home which is more than most people would have done. You are very kind and held the kitten while it died which shows how compassionate you are. The kitten died knowing you loved it and cared about it when you held it.
