Good article on Howard Buffet, Warren's son.  Just a paragraph or two here, but I went to his foundation and read some of the articles posted in thumbnails, speeches, etc. Eye-opening to say the least. Because of his large farm, he not only feeds the hungry, but teaches them farming, to almost the whole world with the exception of a few countries. So my point is that not all "rich" people are greedy CEOs.

In the land of plenty, more than 50 million Americans, including one in five children, don't always know where their next meal is coming from. That's unacceptable, says Howard G. Buffett—midwestern farmer, philanthropist, and son of Warren—who is working to strike back against hunger, starting in the breadbasket.

If Warren Buffett is the Oracle of Omaha, then his 57-year-old son, Howard—a farmer who works 1,400 acres of corn, soybeans, and wheat in central Illinois—might just be the Donator of Decatur. Through his Howard G. Buffett Foundation, he gives away tens of millions of dollars annually to improve living standards in impoverished communities worldwide. Lately, though, the foundation has also been focusing on the home front, working with Feeding America on a problem that some might be surprised to find in the world's richest country—hunger. Recently, Howard took a break from fall harvesting to talk with PARADE about the growing problem of food insecurity in America.

PARADE: How did a billionaire's son get interested in farming?
HOWARD BUFFETT: I've always loved being outdoors, getting my hands dirty. My parents had a gardener when I was growing up, and he and I would dig in the dirt together—my mom and dad were definitely not digging with me! When I was 5, he helped me plant some corn in our backyard, and I remember how fascinating it was to watch it grow. Little did I know that 50 years later I'd be growing corn in a different way. Besides the farm in Illinois, I help my son [Howard W. Buffett] farm 400 acres in Nebraska, and our foundation has 9,200 acres in South Africa, 2,900 in Illinois, and 1,245 in Arizona, where we do agricultural research.

And no, not all rich people are greedy CEOs, by any means.

I don't care how they fill their time, if our money's - in their pockets the system's broken. nm

Buffet's produce farms or Newman's food? Or are you saying you won't contribute to the cause of feeding the hungry?

I just don't know what to think of your subject line here. Care to explain a little further?
No. I'm saying 1% of 1% owning more wealth than the - least-wealthy 90% of us is

a sign of a dangerously broken system. For goodness' sakes, you sat and watched coverage for years about how billionaires were choosing and funding representatives, political action groups, working to disenfranchise voters. To this day have you NEVER wondered if the people of a democracy should be social engineering a fabulously wealthy class who can do that?

We created them, FOR them at their behest, of course, but we created them. How stupid and irresponsible are we?
I also remember when almost everyone with a full- - time job could support himself--

if you worked, you weren't poor. We had few if any billionaires, and most of us were paid enough that we were able to get ahead just by working full time. We've made a really bad trade here.
I don't think we are stupid and irresponsible. Quite the opposite lately. - backwards typist

If it was still as late as the '90s, then yes, we were stupid and irresponsible, but today there's too much info out there to sort through and TRY to find the TRUTH.

Who do I blame? Mostly Citizens United and the Court for allowing the tidal wave of corruption to spread even further through blatant bribery through SuperPACs and corporations during election cycles.

From reading this board one would think the rich just came and took all the money from the poor.

Take your energy spent on being jealous and turn it to creative energy and maybe you will come up with an idea that increases your funds.
don't you guys ever - get tired

of this crap? day after day after day of putting each other down, telling each other they are wrong over dumb stuff like who said what and when and where and how? I surely get tired of it. It is life sucking! I know, I know, don't read it then! sick of hearing that too. don't you guys have real jobs or do you just come on here to troll for things to argue about?

If my money is in their pockets, that means... - OHMT

I bought something that they were selling. So, Bill Gates has my money because I bought his computer. Someone else has my money because I bought a cell phone. I put money in someone's pocket because I wanted a pair of jeans. And someone else is feeding their family because I bought their food at the grocery store. That's the way America works. If you build, bake, or make something that I want, I will pay you for it. If you make something that everyone wants, you get rich. You can give some of it away if you want to (most rich people give tons of money away) but you shouldn't be forced to do it. The government acts like the wealthy somehow got their money by osmosis or a secret money tree hidden and guarded in their back yard, and they think it's okay to take as much of it as they want. I think the government needs to quit spending so much money. I have to live by a budget, but now the people in Washington don't even bother to make a budget. They just keep putting their hands out for more money from all of us. THAT is where the system is broken.
OR, they arranged for your taxes to go up, theirs - to go down, your pay to go down, theirs
[ In Reply To ..]
to go up, your tax dollars to be paid to them as subsidies, your public lands to be sold to them at discounted prices so they could then sell them back to you at increased prices. Everything that can be done through government to massage money into the pockets of people in that prize position is done. It's called social engineering because it's built right into our systems. And it has absolutely nothing to do with earning the money, only in directing its flow and amount.

titled "We were once as depraved as ISIS."  I will paraphrase: In 1569 Protestant English troops massacred every Irish Catholic they found, beheaded the corpses and laid the heads in a path to the British commander's tent.  Later, the Earl of Essex hunted down and butchered 400 women and children, etc., etc.  Queen Elizabeth I approved.  Different religious factions have been slaughtering one another for centuries and guess what - Obama wasn't there!   And in c ...

An Article From A German MagazineDec 03, 2009
Never before has a speech by President Barack Obama felt as false as his Tuesday address announcing America's new strategy for Afghanistan. It seemed like a campaign speech combined with Bush rhetoric -- and left both dreamers and realists feeling distraught.   Just minutes before the president took the stage inside Eisenhower Hall, the gathered cadets were asked to respond "enthusiastically" to the speech. But it didn't help: The soldiers' reception was cool.   One ...

According To Smart Money Magazine, Here Is What Corporations Are DoingMar 12, 2011
"Yes, companies have boosted profits—to near-record levels—by slashing costs." That's also what I have been seeing. The companies are making more money than ever before, taking advantage of those tax breaks, but they are pleasing stockholders by cutting costs (and people) in order to do it. That's very good business for them, but not so much for Americans who need to work. This is not a political comment, because it has been happening under both administrations.   ...
