According to a political science professor in Texas: "There are countless misunderstandings about Latinos, their allegiances and their interests."
Short version:
1. "They don't vote." They DO. Bigger % every election.
2. "They're social conservatives who should lean Republican." Read the long, diplomatic version. (Strictly my own: They can't because too many pubs grab every chance to kick them in the teeth.)
3. "Favor increased government services. Therefore are reliable Democratic voters." Yes on the first part. Big BUT on the second, see #2. (I know some are dying to be Pub, if only.)
4. "Care most about immigration." Nope: #1: Job creation and economy. #2: Immigration (see note). #3. Closely followed by education and healthcare. (NOTE: Some of my legal Latino/a friends tended to resent illegals as much as any wall-hugger; i.e., a significant portion of those who "care" about immigration DON'T care for it.)
5. "Latino candidate gets their vote." Nope. They look to the issues. (Guess there are just too many people named Garcia, Rodriguez, Hernandez, Cruz, Rubio, etc. around these days.)
