Should Freedom of Speech go this far?

This is a local story. The man's son was killed in Iraq in 2006. Please read the story then click on links to the videos and watch. I think it's outrageous.

What are you so offended by? Why not post that part so we can see what you are talking about and *then* decide if it merits any further 'work'?

In general, **unless** what a person says can cause harm (as in saying FIRE in a theater just for kicks) then in a free country we have the FREEDOM to speak -

What would you suggest as a penalty for those who speech offends you? Seriosly how would you possibly legistlate and/or prosecute 'offenders'? And what threshhold would you set? 30% of people are offended? 40%? 51%?

Because if we are going to start prosecuting those whose speech offends, every talking head in America would be behind bars.(hopefully in the same cell)

And that's just for starters.

As was noted in one of the videos, Phelps' group consists of his family members (among others). The link below shows how Phelps' son, Nate, describes growing up in the Phelps household and how he views his father now. (Unfortunately, I guess the rest of this "family" still is intact in its hatred and/or fear.)

God only knows what the current Supreme Court will decide, given some of their recent actions, but I shuddered in disgust when I read this article and viewed the videos. These are soldiers that fought and died so that Mr. Phelps could continue to spew his venom. It breaks my heart to think how much this (and other) soldier's family and friends were heartbroken to see what should have been THEIR space invaded by such hate mongers.

Rev. Phelps isn't much more than a bag of hate. He was the originator of godhatesfags.com but until the publicity on his anti-war protests he didn't get a lot of press.

It's a tough call. As much as I despise the man, I say freedom of speech. He needs to be watched closely to make sure he operates within the law. His son, who will inherit the church, will also need a close eye on him. I remember hearing that son insinuate he would take a more violent path than his father.

You obviously didn't do that. This case is now being appealed to the Supreme Court, and if you watch the video (link below), you'll understand why this story is current and what whack jobs these Phelps people are, as they promise to "preach to the Supreme Court." Of course, given the current justices of the Supreme Court, the soldier's father might be wise to incorporate himself if he wants to win.
