President Obama Regrets Missing 'Cry for Freedom' Rally

Posted: Jan 13, 2015

White House offers public apology for not sending a high-profile official to the march in France.

It is a little too late to be sorry and offer an apology, Mr. President.  Actions speak louder than words, and, for some of us, your words are empty.

Cons have not been the least bit shy about expressing their utter disdain for French Socialist (gasp) President Hollande since the moment he took office, and were bitterly opposed to his demonized predecessors ("First Iraq, then Chirac") whom they declared soft on terrorism time and again. Recent comments from some of their more radical websites have, in effect, declared that the chickens have finally come home to roost in France, where (give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses) porous borders and lax immigration policies have produced no-go-zone terrorist incubators. This worldview may explain why they simultaneously give their high-profile no-show presidential hopefuls or newly empowered House Honcho and Senate Skipper a pass for their absence at the rally while raking the president over the coals. Those dots simply don't connect with their celebrated gutter snipe. These gems are taken from different sources published in the wake of France's audacity to question the motives behind the Iraq WMD invasion:

Feb 10 2003 NY Post headline describing photo of graves of US soldiers who died in the Normandy invasion: “They died for France but France has forgotten.” The author went on to say how badly he wanted to "kick the collective butts of France," whose "chicken" citizens were ingrates "hiding" from the War on Terror, and declaring, "Vive les wimps!” who are "against everything, including that curious American habit of showering every day.”

National Review's Jonah Goldberg called the French “cheese-eating surrender monkeys,” a phrase he lifted from Homer Simpson.

Weekly Standard and Fox News contributor Fred Barnes idea of humor: "How many Frenchmen does it take to defend Paris? No one knows, it’s never been tried. What do you call 100,000 Frenchmen with their hands up? The army”

WaPo's George Will in 2003: The French are "exercising the skill France has often honed since 1870—that of retreating, this time into incoherence.”

In a Fox News interview, a French radio correspondent was interrupted and asked, "With friends like you, who needs enemies," before they suddenly took her off the air.

NY Post, Rep. Peter King: “While many might be comfortable ignoring and even allowing France’s anti-American rants and maneuvers to continue, the reality is that this is a time of survival—and quite frankly I am tired of the United States being a punching bag to a second-rate country.”

There's more, but you get the drift. Cons' stunning Francophobe pivot, not unlike its Putin reversals, for the sake of political expedience, is not just offensive. It's an insult to the intelligence of the American electorate, whose memories are not NEARLY as short as they would like to pretend they are.

W never regretted Iraq War even after admitting they had - no WMDs and

that WMDs had nothing to do with 9/11. Tens of thousands of soldiers died or were maimed, 100,000+ more civilians, yet he would never admit it was a mistake. OTOH, though no one died as a result of Obama's "mistake," we get self righteous gloating in our face. This is not the first time we've gotten a glimpse of the right's peculiar, if not grossly misplaced, sense of moral outrage.

Rally against Islam or for Peace? - sm

I'm glad President Obama did not go to France for the peace rally.

There are questionable values being "rallied" here.

There were 2 attacks.
1. Charlie Hebdo. This is a political satire magazine that had been fire-bombed in the past for its "fun" at Muslim expense.

2. A Jewish market. Muslim/Jewish issue. Explains Netanyahu presence--any opposition to Muslim activity is good for him.

The U.S. had already made their opinions known on Charlie Hebdo activities with the past fire-bombing incident. "We don't question the right of something like this to be published, we just question the judgment of whether it should be published." White House spokesperson Jay Carney.

David Brooks of the NY Times stated Sunday on Meet the Press, that where there is freedom of speech, he doubts that this sort of "freedom" would have been supported on any college campus in the U.S. It would have been shut down and censored as inappropriate.

Why do we not still question that judgment? Or, has it become just too fashionable to oppose Muslims. There are 2.08 billion Muslims in the world and 6.1 million in France. And, yes, some small percentage of them are extremists, dependent on perspective and definition. There are 2.01 billion Christians in the world and some percentage of them are extremists also; this would depend on perspective and definition.

There is a movement in France, which might be considered fascist or national populism, opposing Muslim population in France.

I think it wise that President Obama was careful about choosing the issues that he represents the United States in supporting.

I think it appropriate the condolences he sent for the horrific acts of killings by these extremists and I think it appropriate that France has hunted them down (3/4) and handled the situation as they deemed appropriate.

He is a liar. He's not sorry at all. (sm) - LM

Andrea Mitchell was stunned he didn't attend.

He's selfish. It didn't fit into his plans. He didn't want to disrupt his life, same as during the announcement of Mr. Foley's beheading and the same as his absence during Benghazi and then jetting off to Vegas for a fundraiser.

He has no soul, no compassion. It is actually quite sad. How dare a world crisis occur and disrupt his agenda.
