Just saw this story on CBS this morning, about a woman paramedic who was fired from her job because she made disparaging comments about her supervisor on Facebook. The court ruled in HER favor!

She should not have done that, though. She should - have kept the comments OFF FB.

Problems like that should be solved away from the internet. The court has to rule many times on technicalities, but it does not make it morally right to disparage anyone on the internet. Shame on her for that.

Maybe the company should've treated her fairly, thus - not leaving itself open to negative comments!

Anyway, it was a special about the founding and use of Facebook and coupled a few little stories regarding events that happened on FB and, since Mark Zuckerberg was just named Time's Man of the Year, he's the youngest billionaire in the world, etc., I watched it.

One of the stories was about a middle-aged woman (I'm guessing mid to late 50's; they may have given her age but I didn't catch it) who was a teacher. After a frustrating day at school, she posted something on her status about the kids being snotty-nosed uncontrollable brats (not HER words but that was her meaning; I don't remember her exact words) and apparently one of her student's parent came across her post and reported her to the school. She ended up being immediately fired.

While the circumstances are entirely different, and while I agree with the decision about the paramedic, I also agreed with the school district firing this teacher, too.

Maybe I'm a hypocrite, but I just found the teacher besmirching her young students to be cringeworthy and an insult to the teaching profession in general; however, if a private employee has a problem with a private employer I feel differently. Maybe it's because children were involved with the teacher and with the paramedic situation it's all adults in the foray.

IMO, these types of FB "libel" cases really do need to be taken one case at a time rather than a blanket "no trash-talking on FB!" law.

I'd be willing to bet the kids were just as bad, if not - worse, than the teacher described.

So the chances are that she was telling the truth. The parents, instead of assuming the teacher was at fault, should've taken a closer look at their own brats. I mean kids.
