Romney praises Israel's socialist health care system

Posted: Jul 30, 2012

LOL.  It just doesn't get any better than this.

Whiplash-Mitt Romney Lavishes Praise on Israel's Socialist, Government Controlled Healthcare System

Mitt Romney seems to be laboring under the impression that whatever he says in a foreign country will—like a weekend in Las Vegas—somehow stay in that foreign country.

Either that or he figures nobody back home is paying any attention.

Speaking today to a small group of Israeli contributors to his campaign, the GOP presidential candidate—and supposed sworn enemy of government controlled healthcare—had kind words for the success of Israel’s healthcare system.

"When our health care costs are completely out of control. Do you realize what health care spending is as a percentage of the GDP in Israel? 8 percent. You spend 8 percent of GDP on health care. And you’re a pretty healthy nation.”

If only Romney’s appreciation of Israel’s success did not fly smack in the face of his constant, ideologically based rhetoric guaranteed to insure that only the wealthiest Americans get a taste of the healthcare Israelis receive as their birthright.

Or does the Governor simply not understand that Israel’s healthcare success story—including their ability to control costs— is the direct result of the nation’s socialized healthcare system that has existed since the country’s founding in 1948 and institutionalized by law in 1995?

Today, the nation of Israel requires that every Israeli belong to one of four health maintenance organizations (that’s right…mandated participation)—each operating as a non-profit and each funded by the Israeli government via a progressive tax that every citizen is obligated to pay based on their earnings.

What’s more, the uniform benefits offered by the HMOs are established by the central government and must be made available to every single citizen—regardless of their medical circumstances (the phrase ‘pre-existing condition’ apparently does not exist in the Hebrew language.)

From what I understand, in Poland he's been welcomed (lol) by Ron Paul supporters, who seem to think Paul is a better choice.

I think Romney's problem is that he's just a business man. He says and does whatever he thinks is needed in order to close the deal in front of him with no thought whatsoever to anything else. He is soooo not a politician.

I'm afraid he'll "accidentally" call somebody a Soviet - and forget to correct himself. nm

Israel's national health care is easier to organize and administer due to their small population.

For comparison, their population is about the size of the state of Georgia. IMO, state-run health care would be easier to run, and it's been successful with the small health care programs that states currently control and manage.

But nationally run anything brings a lot of problems that are difficult to overcome. Consider the problems we currently have (such as fraud) with the Medicare program, the food stamp program, etc., not to mention their part in the housing crisis.

The Federal Govt has had a good many years to get these programs in line and to overcome the fraud (and they keep promising to do so), yet they don't and they have run the programs into bankruptcy.

But even putting all that aside,
one of the biggest problems with the national health care in the US is the massive govt oversight involved (not to mention the intrusions into our everyday lives).

For instance, if someone doesn't purchase health insurance for whatever reason, the Federal Govt, with the help of the IRS, will tap into your assets and take what you owe, or they will have the power to freeze your assets until you have paid your fair share, whatever that ends up meaning.

The only power the IRS will have to collect sm - VTMT

the penalty tax will be to deduct it from any income tax refund due. This is the weakest point in the whole ACA in my opinion.

Power of the IRS - lynn

[ In Reply To ..]
There are going to be waivers allowed for different things at the Fed Govt's discretion, just like anything else they offer such as housing, food stamps, etc. One of the waivers offered will be for hardship, inability to pay for whatever reason.

In order to obtain this waiver, you must file paperwork and your assets will be investigated. In the end, if you're not approved for the hardship waiver, you'll have assessed not only the health care tax, but also penalties, just like any other tax you're delinquent on.
Yes, that's how penalties work when - people choose to ignore laws, but
[ In Reply To ..]
beyond assessment, the IRS will have no power to freeze or seize assets, place leins on property or income. ACA only authorizes IRS collection via monies they owe taxpayers on returns. I agree with VMTM. Penalty enforcement is weak. Pay your money (or not) and take your choice. Get affordable health coverage, or become a mandate slacker, forego all future tax refunds, become or remain uninsured in protest, pass your health care expenses on to the rest of us, and take the lumps as prescribed by laws which have been upheld by SCOTUS.

BTW, the guidelines for waivers and eligibility for Medicaid subsidies are reasonable, if not generous. Red state governors who will take it upon themselves to obstruct access for those who meet those guidelines by refusing Medicaid funding, and transform their stats into health mandate federal welfare queens....not so much.

WAY ahead of the pre-ACA US system, manage to face those same challenges and come out smelling like a rose. BTW, ACA prevents the IRS from freezing or seizing assets. I agree with VTMT. Enforcement beyond assessing the penalty and collecting it from monies they owe to taxpayers who CHOOSE to refuse to comply with the mandate is weak.

Why would you listen to the WHO - lynn

[ In Reply To ..]
I have relatives in Australia, and they like their system for the most part, but again, Australia's population is a fraction of the US.

And talk to ordinary Canadians and find out what they think about their system. You'll find out they don't like it and they don't care what the WHO.

Not complying with the mandate will not be possible unless you are someone that doesn't file tax returns. Your health care payment will be made at that time.

So by Fox noise (is that really necessary?), I take it you mean FOX News. Okay, I don't have cable so I don't watch FOX News or CNN or any other cable news program. I just get the local news (or should I say the local noise?)

And by your statement: not constrained by the ethnocentric jingoism that leads chest-beating patriots to reject the realities of 21st century global geopolitical dynamics and to be blind-sided by the follies of cultural hubris.

That took a lot of effort when in reality you could have just told me you're smarter than me because you're not a patriot and you agree with the UN and their organizations such as the WHO and I don't.

But I still can't figure out where you got "ethnocentric jingoism" or "follies of cultural hubris" from what I said, so you've got me there! LOL!!!
Now there ya go, trying to transport words from - your mouth to mine
[ In Reply To ..]
I'll leave the answer to your rhetorical "was that really necessary" jibe to you, since you wouldn't be asking, had you not already formed an opinion. What makes you think effectively expressing my own viewpoints takes "a lot of effort?" It's good to know a second read was all that was needed to get my point across. Your local news sources are of no issue to me, but the sentiments expressed behind your previous and current post are right in line with Fox Nation, so I feel a retraction on my part would be disingenuous.

I am not one of those partisans who feels utterly terrorized by scientific inquiry that is heavily vested in the collection of hard data, which in turn is subjected over time to the rigors of theoretical fine-tuning, aimed at producing valid conclusions and factual outcomes. It certainly has much more integrity than canned speech coming out of ALEC-esque rhetoric that serves, IMO, rather ugly, and potentially destructive, right-wing aendas. To suggest that I, or other progressives like myself, am somehow unpatriotic for believing the rest of the world's intellectual database carries weight and actually matters, would serve as an excellent prime example as such. Mr Bean sure seems to be taking a lot of heat these days for subscribing to that notion, dontcha think?

I won't be expecting any retraction from your side either, and I make no sweeping assumptions about your intellect (AKA "smarts") or lack thereof. Nor do I think criticizing your writing style serves any useful purpose. I respect your right to oppose my political views tooth and nail. I would hope it's not too much to ask that you do the same.

More level-headed GOPers (the ones the cons label RINOs, pointing to their "otherness," an expansive group of fellow citizens) who actually make up the majority of the party are beyond embarrassed. They've gone straight to open hostility and anger toward these tactics. Watched my "RINO" sister do it last time I visited her, right after she told me she's decided to vote for Obama, who she considers to be a centrist.

Keep up the good work. You're doing a fine job helping the independents make up their minds.

You shouldn't.

The word you're looking for is gibe, not jibe (or maybe you're thinking of jab and got all confused). Not that it matters, because I was only pointing out the obvious, which would maybe qualify as rhetoric.

Listen, you made something out of some very simple comments and started the gibes and now you want to lecture me.

Don't bother me with any more of your inane blather.
Now you wanna play spelling police? - OK I’m game.

Jibe. Alternate spellings include gibe, gybe, jib and jibb. You will notice in the 4th reference provided in the above link, your “gibe” spelling derives from the Old French word “giber,” meaning to treat roughly. Is Old French your first language? Modern English is mine.

I’d go into the etymologic explanation of this word and why I think most Americans would choose the “j” spelling over the “g” (mostly because of how it’s pronounced in French vs English), but I wouldn’t want to risk being accused of “thinking highly of my skills” or that I am somehow smarter than you. For the record, I find that assertion highly doubtful. It just so happens I am an English major who takes great pleasure in creative writing and playing around with words. It's a hobby, nothing more, nothing less. If I were as smart as you seem to think I think I am, I would have chosen a more useful degree, huh?

I have taken the liberty of tranforming the verb definitions into noun definitions, by simply substituting the article(s) “a” or “an,” where appropriate, or using the gerund form of the respective existential verbs components. Hope you don’t mind.

1. a shift from one side to the other when running before the wind, as a fore-and-aft sail or its boom. I rather liked the nautical metaphoric application of this entry to my expressed context, especially the “when running before the wind” part.

2. an alteration in course so that a fore-and-aft sail shifts in this manner. Again, the metaphor was attractive. It seemed to be a much kinder, gentler way of saying something to the effect of “high-jacking” the post or straying off topic.

3. (Paradoxically, it can mean) being in harmony or accord or in agreement. Obviously, that’s not how I used it.

4. Once you’ve scrolled about halfway down the reference page I’ve provided, you will find the World English Dictionary (noun) entry: a derisive or provoking remark (consistent within the context of rhetorical questions; I have inserted “jibe” in the place of “question” in my post to which you replied). Extracting the noun form from the previous verb definition, it also means “taunt.” Bingo.! That’s the way I used it. Synonyms would include jeer, scoff, mockery, derision, sneer, just to name a few.

Metaphors aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, as their precise comprehension can be challenging for some, but that’s what I like about them. They are used by creative writers with broad license since they leave room for imaginative play. They certainly aren’t for nitpickers spoiling for a row. For the sake of clarity, I mean a noisy, argumentative quarrel, not objects arranged in a straight line. Please refrain from correcting that word choice. I really do know what I am trying to say. As far as I know, there is no Old French alternate spelling for that word but, if you don’t want to take my word for it, feel free to double check.

I think that’s a wrap. I would only add that you aren’t in charge of my “shoulds” and “shouldn’ts.” Sigh. If it’s been said once, it’s been said a hundred times on this forum. If you don’t want to be “bothered anymore by my inane blather,” perhaps you could refrain from bothering to open my posts, since I have no plans of going anywhere anytime soon.

You have major problems. - Sandy C.

Fraud In Health Care SystemMar 13, 2010
It is estimated that there is at least 100 billion dollars health care fraud annually.  There are truly needy people and they should be helped.  But there are also many people who don't have health insurance because they just do not want to pay premiums, use their money for other things instead, when they could pay and are able to pay.  This is just not right and this needs to be stopped, and that should make a dent in health care costs.  Why not go after the health care ...
