Since I've never done this before and was curious about what it'd turn out to be, I thought I'd pass on what's happening for anyone else who'd thinking about it.
This is a Coursera MOOC, in this case through Georgia Tech. First are a couple of learning styles tests and explanations of study techniques best for each, and a background survey. I learn all four ways but lean to written, no surprise there.
Next, on to adding a participant bio to the ones already there. Turns out fellow students really are from all around the planet. Many are professionals in a wide range of fields, some like me just in for fun or continuing ed, however you view it. Some are already posting to arrange study groups, one on Facebook, in different countries and languages. The Facebook one started out closed, with several sort of Indian-sounding men the only ones accepted so far, so I asked to be accepted out of curiosity. When I came back later, though, it'd been changed to be open to everyone and 40 people had already joined.
The schedule's well laid out, with each line offering a llink to a short video lecture, its quiz, or links to suggested reading materials and other information, followed by dates they should be completed to keep up. I settled into my easy chair with my laptop and listened to the first 3 of the 4 very brief videos assigned for this week, then took two 5-question quizzes right after while it was still very easy to get them all right. :)
Our professor does not have a future in TV. He's glued in front of the camera, talking earnestly to it, but kind of cute because of it. The material's the usual basic start but interesting, most easy to take in, a couple of the extra reading materials requiring me to look items up to understand. I already know I'm going to be most interested in the economic aspects, but right now I'm most intrigued by early comments from various students. Some of them work in allied fields, some bring very different experiences, and I really hope to see a lot more of their take on the material.
The end.
