Pat Robertson links Haitian earthquake with "pact with the devil"

WASHINGTON - Conservative televangelist Rev. Pat Robertson on Wednesday blamed the earthquake in Haiti on a "pact with the devil" purportedly entered into by the Haitian people in a bid to defeat French colonizers in the early 19th century.

"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," Robertson said on his Christian Broadcasting Network show. "They were under the heel of the French ... and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you'll get us free from the French.'

"True story. And the devil said, 'OK, it's a deal,' " Robertson said. "Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another."

Hours after his comments ignited a firestorm in the news media and online, Robertson's 700 Club TV show issued a statement elaborating on his remarks.

Robertson's comments were based "on the widely-discussed 1791 slave rebellion where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact with the devil in exchange for victory over the French. This history, combined with the horrible state of the country, has led countless scholars and religious figures over the centuries to believe the country is cursed," the statement said.

"Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God's wrath," the statement went on. It added that "Dr. Robertson's compassion for the people of Haiti is clear. He called for prayer for them."

The Haitian uprising is regarded as one of history's few successful slave revolts.

Robertson, the founder of the Christian Coalition and a 1988 Republican presidential candidate, has a history of making provocative comments, often in the wake of calamity.

He once said that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's incapacitating stroke was divine retribution for withdrawing from the Gaza Strip.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Robertson seemed to link the storm to abortion. About the same time, he called on the U.S. to assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Following the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, Robertson surmised that lack of prayer in public schools and tolerance of abortion and pornography meant that "God Almighty is lifting his protection from us."

I get so sick of this. I am a conservative, but I am - NOT of the mindset of Robertson, so

I get really really tired of getting lumped into one group. I know many conservatives who are not religous at all, some who are very much so. So, please do NOT think we all have a religious reason behind our decision-making process. I really do wish politics and religion were kept totally separate on all aspects.

Gla to hear it and, I couldn't agree with you more. - Separate church and state. nm

I homeschooled my son because he has multiple disabilities but most people assumed if we were homeschooling it had to be because of religion when nothing could be further from the truth. It was especially bad when he spoke his mind. He has Aspergers, among other things and he is very, very literal in his thinking. My husband and I exposed him to church when he was little because we wanted him to decide for himself one day how he felt about religion and God. Thing is, because he is so literal and everything is so black and white, if he can't see it, it does not exist. We would be with a group of homeschoolers and he would blurt out that he did not believe in God and that he was not superstitious and if there was a God then people would not be suffering, etc. Embarassing. Anyway, I do not think most real Christians think the way this man does and I agree that politics and religion should be completely separate.

P.R. is in a class of his own - anon

It's called "moron". It amazes me the absolute horrific garbage that comes out of his mouth. Why hasn't anyone close to him told him to keep his mouth shut because every time he speaks everyone cringes.

I do not consider PR to be conservative. He is a neo-con. His statement that Haiti and making a pact with the devil just really made me cringe and all I could think of was that PAT ROBERTSON has made a pact with the devil. What he has done to get all his riches...well lets just say in MHO is not very christian. It just amazes me anyone reports anything this delusional man says. They need to wheel him to the crazy house and throw away the key.

This very existence of this fraud and the Lamebaugh . . . - emanon

clearly confirms that the Devil does exist. These two people are absolutely despicable, and how ANYONE could ever make excuses for this hateful behavior is just as evil as they are.

Just my opinion . . . .

Oh brother! You really should come back to earth - with the people who are sane

Ok, so you don't like Robertson, you don't like Limbaugh, and you don't like a lot of the other conservative people, but to equate them with the devil??? You know I don't like Obama and even though it's pretty evident that a lot of stuff matches up with him and the antichrist I just don't buy it. I don't equate any person with the devil. Pat Robertson is just an old senile person who should be pitied. I don't care for Rush, Beck, Hannity, Mathews, Maddow, or Olberman, but I certainly don't equate them with the devil just because I don't like them.

What they say is definitely not worth making excuses for. It's disgusting and vile to me. I can't stand Pat Robertson. I believe he has made his fortune (and it's a pretty big one) off of innocent unsuspecting people. I think he is a wolf in sheeps clothing - a con artist who is now in the senile ages of his life. I cringe whenever I see his picture and I'd like nothing more for that moron to just go away, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the fictional character you speak of.

Sorry emanon, most of your posts even though I don't agree with about 80% of them are usually pretty well thought out, this one, however is not. Just because someone doesn't like someone doesn't equate that person with the devil. Otherwise that would have to include Obama, Pelosi, Reid and everyone else in congress and about 1/2 the country.

My best solution would be for people to stop reporting what old senile Robertson says and take him to the a home for the mentally insane and lock away the key.

You obviously misinterpreted the meaning behind my post. sm - emanon

I'm not sure where you got that I think anyone I don't like is the devil. I believe in the devil the way I believe in God -- that it's something within each of us which guides us to be the kind of human we are. Each of us have a choice on what kind of karma we generate before we leave this earth, so if you choose to be an instrument of fear-mongering, hatred, bigotry, self-importance, especially for the sole purpose of padding your fat bank account, then, yes, I would say, based on my philosophy, that you choose to side with the "devil" in you. It's a conscious thought!

I don't really care if you agree with me most of the time or not, I am simply trying to express myself just like everyone else on this forum. Interesting though, I agree with MOST of your posts :P LOL

c'est la vie!

Haitian Money For Earthquake Relief Was Funneled Through Friends Of The ClintonsAug 01, 2016
Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation and Hillary’s 2016 presidential campaign. By all accounts, the money and what it was meant to do never really reached the Haitian people. While the Clinton Foundation only puts 10% of its donations towards charity, the IHRC was a real racket for Clinton pals, 1% went towards Haitian groups and agencies on the ground. All that is transparent is that the money didn’t go to Haiti, beyond that the trail goes cold. The money for earthquake relief ...

Pat Robertson Isn't A Mac-and-cheese GuyNov 26, 2011
ROFLMAO! Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was asked about her favorite thing to eat at Thanksgiving in a recent interview with Kristi Watts of “The 700 Club.” "It's mac-and-cheese," Rice answered. "Sister, that is my dish, that is the one thing I can rock!" Watts said in agreement. Though Rice’s answer wasn’t all that interesting, Pat Robertson, co-host of “The 700 Club,” thought it was downright confusing. "What is this mac-and-chees ...

I've only felt three earthquakes in the 40 years I have lived in Upstate New York.  I guess this was based in Ontario and we felt it all the way down here!  I hope they didn't sustain too much damage.   TV says it was a 5.5 up there.  Felt the whole house sway.  It felt like I was having a dizzy spell, but my husband felt it too.  I was far away enough to be excited about it - so cool!  But I hope nobody got hurt up in Ontario! ...

So the Pubs are all in a feeding frenzy over the thought that Biden agrees with them regarding not appointing a SC justice.   In the context of Biden's 1992 speech, it was made before Congress left on recess  in anticipation that there might be judges who would resign at the end of the term.  He was simply stating that the process would resume after the recess in a  HYPOTHETICAL (ie, what-if scenario) sense.   He went on to say: In the same remarks, Biden ad ...

By David EdwardsThursday, January 14th, 2010 -- 10:17 am UPDATE: The White House joined the growing chorus of condemnation surrounding televangelist Pat Robertson's comment that the earthquake in Haiti was the result of a "pact with the devil" the nation's founders made when fighting against French colonial rule in the 18th century.
