Sources/Links - Need to make this clear

Posted: Jul 10, 2012

Too many posts below regarding links.  If you want to post a link that is your choice, if you don't want to post a link that is your choice.  Nobody here is required to post a link.  We are all MTs and know how to do our own research.  We can find the information on our own and make up our own minds as to whether or not you want to believe it.

However, too many people are posting links only to have others post nasty replies claiming whatever link is not credible and then goes on to insult the poster.

If people post links and you don't like them don't read them.  You do not need to come back and tell a poster his/her link is not credible just because you don't like it.

One post beliow is very insulting telling another poster she isn't thinking and posted garbage.  It is not only insulting it's rude and there is no place for it on this board.

If you don't like a link someone posted move on.  Nothing is worth insulting another poster and then getting banned.

The only solution is to ban the offenders and 3 strikes - and you are out permanently. nm

Great idea! - Conservative

At least this way, the only ones remaining on this board are those without all the hystrionics and drama that want to discuss politics, all the insults aside. I think 3 strikes is very generous, as it has been posted time after time about the insulting comments left by the same posters. If they do not get it by now, they never will. Cannot figure out why those posters do not start their own board where they and others can post whatever comments they want with no regard for manners. Would absolutely improve the quality of content on this board if that element moved on. Again, this is a great idea...thank you!

This board is falling apart! - Zville MT

I don't come on here very often any more and now I remember why! The poor moderator - he/she must be working overtime! I only read a few regular posters (ones that I know don't insult, etc) from both sides. If you ignore all the insulting posters, you can actually piece together a pretty good discussion.

I like your idea about the insulting posters starting thier own board - then both sides could totally go at it - LOL!

I agree with you. I have had a lot of overtime lately, and I am glad I did after seeing these posts. There is something very odd about someone that cannot get their thoughts across without the insults and fighting. I bet the moderator suffers from migraines after all the negativity on this board....LOL

I bet if all the insulters would move to their own board, they would immediately find something else they were unhappy with. Such is the state of their lives I guess!

picking and choosing - no place for it on this board

I wonder how it would go over if I were to say: "I have never seen a conservative/right wing/fascist with any substantial degree of intelligence, individuality, compassion OR FACT."

I would think if you backed it up with source link from OWS Monthly - that would be just honky-dorky

[ In Reply To ..]
I think the extreme radical conservative Republicans should be careful what they wish for.

Oh wait, no backup source necessary - Be as crazy as you want - nm

I have to say if you take all legitimacy out of the posts - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
You may as well turn off the computer. Anyone can sit around and quote bogus viral e-mails all day long, but to have a discussion you need opinions that are fact-based. Many times I ask for a source because I want to know how a poster is forming an opinion. And yes, if the source is solely from a discredited extreme blog, I use that information in weighing the validity of the opinion. This extreme sensitivy of one side is really getting quite irritating. I never even respond when I see certain monikers or writing styles because I am sick of the accusatory attacks.
I don't use my moniker anymore because of the - attacks. nm

Really. I wish the knee-jerk dislikers would explain these kinds of dislikes. I can see an opinion can be disliked, but come on!

people who are negative and/or like to stir the pot, some 16-year-olds playing hooky from school, etc. I get the feeling from some of the posts lately that many people who post here are not even MTs. It seems that even neutral nonpartisan posts generate "dislikes" lately. Go figure.
Always questioning whose an MT or NOT - Are you an MT, can you prove it
[ In Reply To ..]
What gives you the right to question anybody's profession? Doubt if you're even an MT. Can YOU prove it? You can have all the "feelings" you want, doesn't mean a dam thing. I "feel" like you are trying to start trouble. I "feel" you're wrong about a lot of posters and you have no facts, but love to stir things up and question people just to troll.
I stated my opinion in response to the post above... - sm

It strikes me as odd that you would choose that one item to pick on rather than focus on the content of the entire post. I stand by what I said in my post. This is a public board and ANYONE can post whether an MT or not.

Anyone on this board who is an MT... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
can easily pick out the non-MTs just by spelling and grammar usage. MTs are language specialists and don't make those kinds of mistakes.

MTs are often barely making minimum wage these days so are not usually scornful of people working poverty level jobs and stuck because they don't want to lose their health care.
That's exactly why I use "nm" and "sm." - nm

there are some that no matter what is posted are going to insult - I really think that's the political and cultural climate we are in these days. It's sad that adults can't have discussions without resorting to name-calling, but I don't see it getting any better any time soon. Even your post about links set off insults!

Keep doing what you're doing and know some of us understand and appreciate it :)

Thought it was interesting - Conservative

[ In Reply To ..]
I thought the same thing you did about all the insults listed after the Moderator posted her/his comments. I think they protest too much. I have seen plenty of insults from both sides, and also have seen plenty of deletions and removals. Unfortunately, the worst offenders seem to be the ones protesting the most. It is hard to figure out, if they hate this board so much, why even bother reading it, or posting to it. There are a lot that skip over those inflammatory, anonymous posts. Many people do not use a moniker because every time they make a comment, any comment, they are attacked relentlessly. Those being attacked are not all liberals and not all conservatives; there is some of both. I find it hilarious when they start with Sherlock Holmes syndrome as if they can determine who wrote what, question writing styles and time stamps. There have been posters previously deleted, and I believe banned, because they assume identities incorrectly, or address comments to someone that never made them. What a web they weave. If someone does not like a post or poster, what is wrong with a little self control and just moving on to someone you "like" that shares whatever views you have or go to a board that shares the same? Pretty simple solution that takes minimal brain activity to institute and solves many, many problems for those that do not want to participate in the playground verbal beatings that a few are so fond of.

As a courtesy to my fellow posters I will continue... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
to back up my posts/opinions with links to show why I believe what I do. This is how I was taught to participate in a debate forum. It is not a crime to ask someone for a source and does not warrant a nasty response. It is not a matter of some people being lazy, just a matter of courtesy to copy the link where you obtained your info to help the other person to understand your view.

That is a good point, however, - what if

[ In Reply To ..]
I think what people were getting upset about is they would post a link to Fox or WND or other reputible sites and then get called all names, called ignorant, stupid, uneducated, or that they are posting garbage, all because a poster does not like the sources. I think that is what the problem was. I think most posters feel, okay I read this on Fox or WND so why post a link. You're only setting yourself up to get called all sorts of names you don't deserve. Some posters go even as far as to be insulting stating "everyone knows those sites are not reputable" and then goes on to slam, which truthfully means your stupid. For me if a poster posts links thats fine. Even if its a link to a site I don't like I'll still read it because sure enough they might say something truthful, but again that is for me and me alone to decide whether I believe something. And if they don't post links, if I'm curious I will Google and do the searching for myself and then make up my mind on whether or not I believe something. I just wont' play the game of your site is not credible but mine is.

brava! - ...

[ In Reply To ..]
So glad you chimed in. I agree that asking for a source does not warrant a nasty response, nor is it a matter of being lazy.

And when you do post a source, that doesn't warrant being called nasty names - and told you posted garbage

[ In Reply To ..]
Wanting to see a link because you think something is interesting and would like to look it up is one thing. Demanding a link and then telling people they post garbage is another.

It goes both ways.
I think that was the moderator's point. - nm

that's what I said... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
It should be noted, however, that to share the opinion that a source is biased or not credible is not nasty.
This is true, as long as it is stated as an opinion - and not fact. nm

Credible SourcesDec 01, 2012
I am posting a new message because the old thread is so far down the board. A credible source is one which is able to back up their statements with facts. This group does not include Fox News, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh or CainTV. And believe it or not, even though I have always been liberal, I used to enjoy watching William Buckley and will sometimes read George Will. I wish that Buckley were still alive to give his opinion on the first group I mentioned because I know what it would be. Eve ...

Citing Sources - Left Vs RightMar 21, 2012
As I see it, one problem on this board is citing acurate sources.  It's really not our fault as informed voters.  It's the fault of the media - radio, TV, internet, newspapers, etc.  For example, if a poster here wants to discuss "Fast and Furious," the only sources are going to be right-leaning sources (RLS), since the left-leaning sources (LLS) are not covering the story.  The same is true, for example, regarding the transvag ultrasound story only being reported ...

Holder's Not In The Clear Yet With F&FSep 22, 2012
"Even if we put the best possible face on the Inspector General’s report about the “Fast and Furious” gunwalking scandal — and assume that embattled Attorney General Eric Holder knew nothing, nothing about a cockamamie operation that funneled thousands of American guns to murderous Mexican drug cartels until very late in the game — we’re still left with one stunning conclusion: Why the hell not? I am middle-aged. Sometimes in past elections when I have voted for President, my guy has won and sometimes he has lost, but one thing has been consistent. Let's Clear Up The Minimum Wage NonsenseOct 27, 2014
By "clear up", I mean "to the extent possible".  I've spent two weeks "in the stacks", reviewing more than 2 dozen of the more recent economic analyses on the subject of the minimum wage, from sources that are considered reasonably objective.  For the most part, I focused on studies published by the NBER.  Of course, there's never any absolute assurance of objectivity, but peer review offers some reason to hope for it. They don't call economics "the dismal science" ...
