Obama says NCAA should require schools to give guaranteed scholarships

Posted: Mar 22, 2015

Add President Obama to the list of people who thinks college athletes deserve more than they get.

In an interview with the Huffington Poston Friday, the president said that the NCAA should require schools to offer guaranteed athletic scholarships “no matter what.”

"Students need to be taken better care of because they are generating a lot of revenue here," Obama said. "An immediate step that the NCAA could take – that some conferences have already taken – is if you offer a scholarship to a kid coming into school, that scholarship sticks, no matter what.

“It doesn't matter whether they get cut, it doesn't matter whether they get hurt. You are now entering into a bargain and responsible for them."

The Big Ten and Pac-12 have already taken the measure suggested by the President – four-year guaranteed scholarships. Based on the new rules for autonomy that passed early this year, the rest the Power Five conferences aren’t far behind. The same can’t be said for universities outside of Power Five conferences, however.

Obama seemed discouraged with the millions of dollars that flow around collegiate athletics, but stopped short of saying that some of that money should end up in the pockets of student-athletes.

“What does frustrate me is where I see coaches getting paid millions of dollars, athletic directors getting paid millions of dollars, the NCAA making huge amounts of money, and then some kid gets a tattoo or gets free use of a car and suddenly they’re banished,” Obama said. “That’s not fair.”

"In terms of compensation, I think the challenge would just then start being, do we really want to just create a situation where there are bidding wars?" Obama asked. "How much does a Anthony Davis get paid as opposed to somebody else? And that I do think would ruin the sense of college sports."

Above all, Obama’s main point of emphasis was to make sure those who are injured in athletic competition are completely covered health-wise, including the financial burdens that may come with surgery and rehabilitation.

“You’ve got to make sure that if they get injured while they’re playing that they’re covered,” Obama said.

Good grief!  Now Obama is an expert on school scholarships and how they should be awarded.  He just cannot seem to give enough "free stuff" away.  According to him, athletes need not be in any way intelligent enough to keep up their grades; they can be illiterate as long as they are generating "revenue."

So you are saying that if a student is.....sm - VTMT

receiving a full sports scholarship and gets hurt while playing it is OK for the college to take the scholarship away and not pay his/her medical bills? I disagree.

I read the article and got quite a bit more out of it than that. - LM

The personal commentary at the bottom of this article says "He just cannot seem to give enough "free stuff" away. According to him, athletes need not be in any way intelligent enough to keep up their grades; they can be illiterate as long as they are generating "revenue."

This is just Obama's personal opinion on a privately-funded issue, the government has nothing to do with it.

In fact, many people don't know this, but college sports' scholarships do not come from general college fund money, they come from sports-related sales fund and the NCAA itself and divided out among ALL sports scholarships players - not a dime comes from the government, even state universities.

Perhaps another "over-reach" on his role to even comment, yes, but the president is allowed personal opinion.

I'm taking it you aren't a basketball or football fan and didn't go to one of the schools mentioned? :)

Because even staunch conservative Republicans that went to the colleges mentioned (or are just fans) agree with him on this one, they just have a hard time admitting it, right now, because it's Obama ;)

Having gone to a basketball legacy school myself, I know for a fact the rules are bent for certain athletes to even get in - schools "unofficially" hiring ACT "cheat helpers", as well as "made-up" classes or "bunny courses" so they could keep their GPA. In fact, I'm ashamed to say my college was placed on NCAA probation a few years back for those exact infractions.

As a result of scholarships that don't provide enough funding for their care (and they can't get a job, their job IS to be an athlete), it often then falls on alumni, other nonathlete students and their families and general fans to help "donate" to things like their meal plans, getting their families there to help them watch their sons play or healthcare for injuries.

And if that student blows out their knee, pthbbt, their career is gone, that's it - used and abused, too bad so sad.

Need a knee or hip replacement 5 years later from the wear-and-tear of it all while selling cars at the local dealership on their former fame status? Forget it, no Worker's Comp.

His point is, if you helped the kids make the scores to get in and the GPA to keep them in so you could profit from them - knowing most have no career athletic career after college - you are therefore responsible for their maintenance and the injuries they sustain as a result.

I'm not sure what's wrong with that - IMO, anything else is just greedy and exploitation.

P.S. I believe Northwestern recently sued in order to unionize to obtain these benefits recently? Not a fan of unionizing except in certain cases, but I think they were just trying to make a point/bring the issue to national attention.

The Idea Is To Require People Who Have Cadillac CoveragesSep 14, 2013
One of the things I'm not crazy about in this interim period before costs are brought more in line is Obamacare's throwing more responsibility on us for shopping for prices. People who belong to unions will not get a break on this--i.e., they won't still be able to just go to any hospital or doctor, no matter how overpriced, and have it all covered by insurance that costs no more than that most people have.  Right now, people are going to their $600/hour cardiac or other sp ...

NRA Wants Armed Guards In SchoolsDec 21, 2012
Of all the ways in which we could respond, this, in my opinion, is the most stupid. It should be noted that "good guys with guns" are not impermeable to gunfire. Fighting fire with fire is not the way for our society to evolve. The CDC is barred - legally BARRED - from releasing data on gun deaths because the NRA is such a strong lobby. Until which time this data is made available, the NRA should keep both sides of their mouths shut. And shame on all the spineless legislators who bow to the ...
