"The Constitution did not guarantee public safety - it guaranteed liberty

Posted: Mar 22, 2013

This man took off 3 days of work to speak before his representatives in CT. Good for him. It's just a shame that those who make the laws refuse to hear.

liberty does not obviate the need for rules, regulations, etc. - doe

Rules and regulations are commonplace in the exercise of our liberties. We are not permitted to ride bicycles on highways. We are not permitted to exercise our sexual freedom with those who cannot consent. Yet, bicycles and sex are still prevalent in our society.

I see nothing wrong with closing loopholes in an effort to increase compliance and insure public safety.

Awesome post, doe! - fencing mom

And I agree totally. This should be a no-brainer.

The goal was to secure the benefits of life, liberty and - the pursuit of happiness to a nation of equals.

[ In Reply To ..]
Just the freedom for ordinary folk to drop dead or not, i.e. Old World style, wasn't quite what they had in mind.

Of course, those who were not WHITE MALE PROPERTY OWNERS weren't so equal, but, hey, over the years most have continued to think they did pretty darned good in bringing the revolutionary, liberal notions of the Age of Enlightenment to the New World.

The Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, but - costing others money by lying is actionable. You

know, Truthhurts, if you go look up a copy of the Constitution, you'll find it's an astonishingly short set of base rules for the running of a nation. Put together by a pack of mostly attorneys, those rules were of course meant to give birth to many, many, many sub-rules that would allow a nation of competing interests to actually function. For instance, you'll notice it says nothing at all about street signs, yet here they are.

This is a statement the man made and - Truthhurts

if you would have watched and listened to the video you would see what the argument truly is about, but I am assuming you may be one of many here that only read the subject line or the first few sentences in a post and decide, due to your reply, that the OP made that remark.

If I assumed wrong, please accept my apology, but it doesn't take away from the fact that our so-called representatives waste time letting the constituents speak at hearings but, whatever they decided to do in the first place, doesn't alter their tactics (for want of a better word).

Truthhurts, IMO the man's a major fool. I truly wish all - legislators were required to take Constitution 101

[ In Reply To ..]
but this man's apparent sincerity does not make up for his disgraceful lack of understanding and knowledge. My sympathy is with those members of the Connecticut legislature who paid him the courtesy of sitting quietly while he spoke, his statements heavily about insulting them.

Come on. "The NRA has done more for gun safety, the NRA will do more for gun safety this weekend than this committee will do in your careers."

Does this sound like a sensible, informed mind? Why did anyone bother to present this worthless yammer on their web site as something worth listening to?

I thought the man spoke passionately, but I did not find this statement to be compelling: "The constitution does not guarantee public safety".

I realize it's easy to be swayed by an interesting turn of phrase, but his statement is a mixed metaphor that veers off topic and results in confusion.

It's been proven over and over again. Look at the toughest gun laws in the country and look at the crime rates.

DF's bill did not pass but Reid plans on bringing up another bill in April when they return from their spring vacation in 2 weeks and I'm sure he's going to make an amendment attached to a very popular bill, so the chances of it passing would be high. (BTW, didn't they just come back from a vacation?)

Read the bill. She had wanted 150-157 guns banned, and various ammo. Plus she wanted to ban parts of guns; i.e., pistol grips, certain scopes, etc.

You seem to be taking the word of LSM articles. Go to the source of the bill that did not pass (S. 150). Reid will be putting up another one in April when they return.

put partisan legislation into popular bills. Both sides do it so frequently too. Bunch of children. Obviously, though, I come down on the other side of this particular debate.

The whole only criminals will have guns thing is getting old. Only criminals have crystal meth. I'm not jealous. I only support a ban on assault style weapons and mainly because they are useless/redundant for any legal and sane purpose. Handguns and rifles are all the average person needs to defend themselves. You can hunt with a rifle and defend yourself with a handgun.

In most third world countries, anyone can own a gun and criminals are still the only ones with the heavy firepower. In most developed nations, they have far stricter gun control and far fewer gun deaths.

A gun owner is statistically 4.5 times more likely to die by gunshot than a non-gun owner. I have also never seen a case of self-defense where the model of the gun was what made the difference between life and death (i.e., any gun would have done it.)

A big reason gun laws fail in places like Chicago is that you don't usually have to go far to get more guns, so gun smuggling is insanely easy. Also, so-called "legitimate" gun stores routinely sell vast supplies of guns and ammo to the unsavory nuts who in turn sell those to criminals. We need to make businesses that sell guns and every person that buys guns accountable for the safety and security of that weapon. We're playing fast and loose with extremely dangerous weapons and that, more than the type of gun, is where our problem is coming from. The public in general should be able to purchase a weapon, but it shouldn't be without regulation. Universal background checks without loopholes, universal gun registration and tracking (including when transferred from person to person - though the public should have no access to this database; law enforcement only), and limits on how many guns a person can get within a certain time frame.

If everyone has a gun, then every criminal will have two.

The problem is that criminals will NEVER turn over their guns - Truthhurts
[ In Reply To ..]
They will also be able to find/buy guns illegally through their networks.

I heard a stupid remark today...forget who it was but he stated that part of the problem is that gun shop owners don't report a gun when it's stolen....WTH...that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I'm sure gun dealers have to have some record of buying guns and they would have to report the gun stolen or else face the consequences if the gun is traced back to them in a crime.

If a family wants to give a gun to another family member, they won't be able to do it unless they also pay the fees to register that gun...even if the gun was an ancestor's gun from the civil war that is only a wall hanger. That's ridiculous, too.
I have no idea about stolen guns - Fanatical Hypocrite
[ In Reply To ..]
but I'm referring to the fact that right now we don't know who has or doesn't have guns, so there's no way to even possibly trace where all the guns are going. It's basically the same as Holder's Fast & Furious, except on a massive scale and in the private sector.

As for it being ridiculous to pay registration fees, we can probably do something to lower the fees on registration for older guns. I also wouldn't mind an exemption for these so-called "wall hanger" guns. Muskets for instance don't really need to be tracked. As for anyone else, a 20 dollar filing fee and a one page form isn't much to ask.

How lazy are gun culture addicts getting? They can spend all day firing a gun, but their hand hurts too much from pulling the trigger to fill out a form? They're rich enough to afford a firearm, but too poor to afford a registration fee? They say that owning a gun is a right, but it comes with no responsibility? We make people register their vehicles. We make them get licenses. We make them buy auto insurance. Why do we do this? Because vehicles in the wrong hands can be dangerous. Because anonymity behind the wheel is reckless and unnecessary. Because like all rights, we earn the right to drive through the responsibility to handle a vehicle safely. Vehicle registration hasn't ended vehicle-based crimes. That doesn't mean it didn't help or that we give up and say everyone between the ages of 1-100 can drive anything with a wheel anywhere they want any time they want while wearing a mask and practicing their juggling techniques.

The way we screen for and catch criminals with guns is inadequate, but the answer lies in refinement, not anarchy.

If rocket launchers are outlawed, only outlaws will have rocket launchers.
Auto insurance registration is only through the states - Truthhurts
[ In Reply To ..]
The Feds want gun registration and that would go in a database. I've read horror stories where people with a registered gun (did everything right) had SWAT teams and the Feds break into homes and confiscate their guns.

What about the family in NJ? The kid was an avid hunter, took the gun safety course and daddy bought him a gun for his 11th birthday. CPS shows up at his door with the police after the kid's picture was posted on Facebook with his pride and joy birthday present. It was pointed out that his finger wasn't on the trigger (which is taught in gun safety classes). They tried to tell the father that he had to open his gun safe so they could see if his guns were registered...no such law in NJ, and the father knew his rights and wouldn't allow it without a search warrant. Now CPS is saying no charges will be filed....hey...they had no right to do what they did in the first place!

The exception is that gangs and drug dealers will NEVER follow any gun laws and that's the major problem with trying to pass gun control legislation. You can't penalize law-abiding citizens because of a few bad apples. There has to be a way to get the guns out of the hands of the true criminals without penalizing law-abiding citizens. Fast and Furious didn't helped either by letting guns walk.

They *had* to do that because someone - reported it to them.

I THOUGHT it was unconstitutional to force a citizen to give up their right to sue!  However, the current right-leaning Supreme Court would probably uphold this UNconstitutional provision.  After all, they believe corporations are people, and they allowed donations from different COUNTRIES to American politicians. This might bring the public option back strongly if the dems finally say, "Enough of this crap!" We can only hope. NJ ...

Wear your Obama gear (shirt, button, whatever) and take a picture of yourself. Upload it at the site and they will send it along for you. It's a great way to remind him why we elected him ^^ NJ ...
