Obama is finally getting tougher

Posted: Jul 23, 2010

This is on jobless benefits and extension of same. He finally states where the problem lies and that it is an election ploy.

(CNN) -- President Barack Obama urged Congress on Monday to pass an extension of unemployment benefits, saying that Senate Republicans have allowed short-term political concerns to trump the needs of the jobless.

During an appearance in the Rose Garden, Obama argued that that the federal government has "a responsibility to offer emergency assistance to people who desperately need it" and an obligation to help families "make ends meet."

The Senate is set to consider a bill Tuesday that would extend the deadline to file for unemployment benefits through the end of November. The bill would cost $33 billion in additional deficit spending, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Senate GOP leaders have blocked a vote several times, highlighting deficit concerns by arguing that any benefits extension should be offset by spending cuts. Democrats are counting on the seating of the replacement for Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia on Tuesday to break the logjam.

In his remarks at the White House, Obama said that three times in recent weeks, a "partisan minority" has used "parliamentary maneuvers" to block a vote on extending unemployment benefits. The Republicans are guided by a "misguided notion" that a new relief bill would discourage people from looking for work, he said.

"That attitude reflects a lack of faith in the American people," Obama said. People "aren't looking for a handout. They desperately want to work."

The Republicans should stop holding people "hostage to Washington politics," he declared. "There are times when you put elections aside. This is one of those times."

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, immediately fired back, releasing a statement slamming Obama for fiscal irresponsibility.

"The president knows that Republicans support extending unemployment insurance, and doing it in a fiscally responsible way by cutting spending elsewhere in the $3 trillion federal budget. At a time of record debt and deficits made worse by Washington Democrats' massive spending spree, that's the right thing to do and the right way to do it. The American people are asking 'where are the jobs?' and President Obama continues to offer only disingenuous attacks, not answers."

More than a million Americans are estimated to have exhausted the unemployment benefits lifeline since the deadline expired in June.

The U.S. unemployment rate stood at 9.5 percent as of June. The jobless rate has averaged 9.7 percent over the first half of the year, and many economists expect it to remain elevated into 2011.

Before last month, out-of-work Americans were eligible for extensions once they maxed out at 26 weeks of state benefits.

Depending on the state, people could qualify for up to 73 weeks of federal benefits -- a total of 99 weeks. But, citing deficit concerns, Senate Republicans blocked the extension with a 57-14 vote before the July Fourth holiday.

Seventy-eight percent of Americans still believe the U.S. economy is in a recession, according to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released last month. Forty-one percent believe Republicans are more responsible for the nation's current economic problems, while 28 percent blame the Democrats. Twenty-six percent blame both political parties.

He blames the republicans for not helping the jobless and yet the only thing Obama can do is extend their unemployment benefits? That is only temporary help. What is he gonna do when that runs out and these people still don't have jobs? These people need jobs....not money handouts.

Have you people seen how high our national debt is? We cannot afford to keep extending unemployment benefits. WE NEED JOBS!!!

And just for the record... - sm

I blame both parties for being in the mess we are today.

Out of work for 35 weeks here. I have submitted between 10 and 15 resumes each week, along with between 20 and 30 plus other applicants for the job, according to Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com.

Yes, we need jobs. But make no mistake about this: We need the benefits extension every bit as much. You cannot find work without the internet, electricity, a phone and an address.

Kindly spare us the phoney outrage over the deficit. Pubs did not blink an eye or shed a single tear over it when they were creating it, nor have they raised a SINGLE OBJECTION based on Paygo to any other meausures except jobless benefits. They need to put their money where their mouths are.

In 2006, the cost of NOT restoring the tax rate on annual incomes greater than $250,000 back to the pre-Bush tax cuts level (from 35% to 39.5%) would be $2.8 trillion dollars over the next 10 years (through 2016). See second link. Compared to historical tax rates, 39.5% is still a LOW, (let me repeat) LOW tax rate. See first link. When the pubs conduct a Paygo filibuster over paying for those lost revenues, they just might gain a smidgeon of credibility. Until then, it is just so much more hot air.

about the fact that I blame both political parties for the mess we are in. I don't believe I've given Bush a freebie on this one. Every one always seems to point the finger at Bush and yet not hold Obama accountable for the outrageous spending he is doing. Funny how that works, huh?

The whole point, which you obviously didn't get, is that we need to do more than extend unemployment benefits. We need to do stuff to help our economy and get employees hiring people so you can get a job.

If we would focus on the economy first and foremost instead of pushing through this administration's agenda, you could possibly have had a job by now and the extension of unemployment benefits wouldn't be needed.

I am not personally attacking the unemployed and I know how tough it is to get a job as I have family members who can't find work right now and/or are laid off from their job. The unemployed definitely need help right now.

I agree with the poster below.....why can't we use the unspent stimulus money to fund this instead of adding more to our deficit. Yes, I am very aware of our deficit and 33 billion might not seem like much compared to our national debt right now but every little bit adds up. If we can fund the extension without adding to the deficit....why shouldn't we? I think that was the republicans whole point...which some of you have obviously missed and have just heard the rhetoric from the democrats and this administration saying....the pubs don't want to help the unemployed. It does help when you stop reading one-sided news articles....just a helpful tip.

My post was NOT an attack on the unemployed. It was an attack on this administration for merely doing a temporary fix when we need more than that.
I did not miss your comment and can assure you - sm

I "get" your point. But I do not agree that it was the whole point. I am like you, at a loss to understand exactly WHY those funds were not used, for the simple fact that throughout this entire ordeal, the media has not ONCE reported on that. I feel certain there is a reason for this. Whether it is a good reason or not will have to remain a mystery until the media decides to do its job and report the whole story instead of just stirring the pot.

I did not bash Bush, just stated a fact or two regarding the CONTINUING effect his tax cuts had, are having and will have on the deficit, unless and until some of all of them are allowed to expire. A point you seem to have missed is that restoring the tax rates as mentioned in the previous post would pay for the UI benefits many, many, many, many, many times over, unless of course 2.8 TRILLION dollars does not seem like a lot to some.

For the record, I AGREE with spending cuts as well.
I too have previously stated that I have no - sm

problem with the Bush tax cuts expiring. Let the taxes go back to where they were before the cuts and cut govt spending. That right there would help our economy out more than anything and if a simpleton like myself can figure that out....why the heck can't politicians?

staged hand wringing over the deficit and the "we can't afford to keep paying unemployment benefits" threw me when I got the impression the post reflected a GOP perspective.

Speaking of GOP, us simpletons are not the only ones who have figured out the wisdom of sunsetting Bush tax cuts. In fact, the majority of our politicians (not to mention economists) ARE in favor of doing so, but party of no and "tax cuts should NEVER have to be paid for" filibustering most certainly will take its best shot at extending them.
Several dems are currently getting on board - Zville MT

with extending the tax cuts. I'm not sure what that will exactly mean in the end or if any of them will actually vote in the end to extend them, but this is not just a republican thing anymore.
Several, meaning 4 or 5, tops out of 253 dem reps. - A minute minority opinion. sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The article mentioned only reps, no senators. Add those 5 reps to a total pub block vote of 178 and that is 183 versus 248. To get it to fly, they have to win over 70 more dems...when pigs fly. That is why I felt most comfortable saying that a majority of politicians support it.
Ya know....my opinion is that - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
these few dems who are suddenly for extending the Bush tax cuts are only doing so to help them out vote wise. Look at the Tea Party...I generally stand behind them but when it comes to taxes....I don't think we should cut taxes....leave them alone. However, with all the tea party people screaming lower taxes....this could be a way to suck up to them. Just a thought.

I personally feel extending the tax cuts is a bad thing. We need revenue from taxes. We survived before the Bush tax cuts. However, I don't want my taxes raised significantly either. The biggest thing is cutting government spending.

We definitely need to weed out wasteful programs or at least the waste in a program, keep politicians from voting themselves raises, etc.

the unemployed, we honestly cannot continue to keep extending unemployment benefits. I meant that when I said it. We spend $33 billion for this extension and when that runs out, do we spend another $33 billion? When does it end? It ends when there are jobs and that is something I haven't seen this administration do much about. The jobs that were created were a lot of construction jobs....which ended when the job was completed. We need sustainable jobs. What I have seen out of this administration is them pushing through bills that are hurting us economically because we truly don't know the full costs...as things always cost more than govt estimates it will....and people are scared. If this administration had let the economy right itself and not spent so much money with talk about higher taxes and higher health costs.....no one is hiring right now.

I don't think I'd ever agree with Obamacare...but I'd have a lot more respect for this administration if they would have waited until the economy was sound first.

Why can't we take the $33 billion from - sm

the stimulus money that hasn't been spent yet instead of adding another $33 billion dollars to our national debt?

This administration really needs to start looking at the debt it is racking up here. I understand that Bush started it along with a democratic controlled congress, but the rate we are going....Obama and a democratic congress are gonna finish us off by bankrupting us even more than we already are.

I agree with the other poster. Extending unemployment benefits is a temp fix. It is like using a piece of gum to plug a small hole in a dam. Sure it will work for a while but when it stops working.....we are in big trouble.

Stimulus - Linda

[ In Reply To ..]
I think if Obama had just divided the stimulus up evenly among all legal Americans who needed it, we would have money left over, and everyone would be in pretty good shape.

Funny you should mention that. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I think giving Americans money from the stimulus would have stimulated our economy a heck of a lot more than what the stimulus money was spent on. We don't even really know what all the stimulus money went to.

If they had given me money, I'd have paid my mortgage down and I'd currently be spending more money buying other things. Right now I'm so focused on getting my house paid down that I spend very little money on anything else. We don't go out to eat. I've gone to the movies once this year. If it isn't groceries or necessities....I haven't bought it for fear of overextending myself during this recession.

I just wish our government was as responsible and as conservative with our money as I am with my money.

The stimulus was a joke. It was purely an attempt for politicians to give money to those special interest groups that supported them during their campaigns. I really don't see where it did much to benefit the American people.
Exactly!...stimulus is a joke and benefits SHOULD - come from it instead of more debt.nm

$15 million spent on road signs merely stating that the project was funded by the recovery act. That much money spent to create a total of 17 jobs for signs that will be taken down eventually when the work is done. Oh yeah...that makes a lot of sense. Let me guess....that was Bush's fault somehow, right?

That was what the republicans wanted to do... - Zville MT

[ In Reply To ..]
that way it didn't add more to the deficit. I know the republicans didn't care much about the deficit when they did all that spending while Bush was in office, but I also recall that the democrats did a lot of screaming about the deficit during that time.

My, how things have changed.

Debt - Linda

Try to remember. Democrats held congress for half the time President Bush was in office.
I know, which makes me even madder! - Zville MT
[ In Reply To ..]
The fact that the democrats were in control of Congress while Bush was in office only serves to make it that much more convenient to blame him instead of themselves. It's no wonder no one can believe anything that comes out of a politicians mouth!
